This was a good video but if I may leave a few points ( some of which already stated). The order of you tray are correct for getting the best results. Well done on that. 1. Replace the two top trays with either crushed White Pumice ( often used in gardening), Biohome, Seachem Matrix, Eheim Substrap Pro. These bio media’s will offer the most surface area for the water to contact allowing a better conversion of ammonia to nitrate and then to nitrite. If you don’t want to not pay for the expensive biomedia then you can also use crushed lava rock ( used in gardening or in fire pits ) or Growstone 950HW33cF GS-1 ( which is found on EBay )..... Side note: the Seachem is just a crushed white Pumice and the Biohome is similar to the growstones. Currently I have the Seachem and the Biohome in my Sunsun filters and I have had no issues. 2. Buy some lubricant for the gaskets/seal# and lube them every time you maintain your filter. This will prevent them from fronting out or leaking. 3. Cut your hoses to length. There should be very little slack in your hoses. The shorter the hose the better flow you will have and the less you filters pump will have to work thus extending its life and usefulness. 4. Chemical filtration isn’t necessary and should only be used to take medication or smell out of the water. And when it’s used only carbon should really be used and it should be placed on the top tray or it’s stripping nutrients from the water that the beneficial bacteria need to thrive. 5. When you reassemble your filter after cleaning you it would benefit you to fill the filter up to roughly 75/80% with aquarium water before you put the top back on and start pumping. This will really help by cutting the time it takes to prime your filter. Good luck on your filter and with your aquarium!
Thanks for the video that didn't assume I knew it all! I partially watched a bunch of other videos first but yours is the first one that answered my questions about where the different filter media went. Thanks so much for keeping it at my level.
Great video and I wanted to say thanks for the explanation on the media trays. I looked at 5 other videos before I found yours, and not one mentioned the importance of the order of the media. The rest is pretty self explanatory but that part seems pretty important. Cheers mate!
This is a great, affordable cannister filter and the trays are flexible as far as adding as much or less mechanical or biological filter media. I have one 1400 litres an hour as a back up to one of my six footers. Works perfect.
Thank you for great video. I just got one and you are the only one who showed how to hook up the intake and outtake parts. Appreciate it. I have the same size tank. With a mess goldfish.
@@LynnisSadler thank you for replying. Mine didn't have instructions with it. But I kind of figured it out. Your video also helped. Not only do I have a oranda but dojos also.
Nice video, step by step demo. One question, at which level the canister should be kept? At the same level parallel to aquarium? Or below the tank? Is it required to place sponge in middle and top tray? I mean, along with media, sponge is really required at the floor of the middle and top tray ? The concept of keeping ceramic rings at the bottom is quite logical as, inlet water first hit the bottom which contains dirt. It will help to break the dirt.
I got one too and only use two blue sponge pads on bottom then one blue/white hand cut polishing pad, then I split a original stock white pad in half, all in bottom tray . I don’t put any pads above it just matrix and sometimes charcoal. 44 gallons and it last about a month and a half . Great video thx
Thank you so much, i thought I had to pump it while it was turned on, and my tubes were switched. I've been trying to figure out this thing for about 3 hours not understanding why it wasn't sucking lol 💛 many thanks!
Good video, but do not rinse the bio balls or ceramic rings, those both contain beneficial bacteria which you want! I wouldve taken it a step further and tossed in the old filter cartridge from you hang on back filter in one of the trays (again, without rinsing) to help kick start that canister filter! And my last bit of advice would be to put the sponge and the pieces of filter floss in the same tray at the very bottom, this way all the garbage gets caught in the same tray and makes for an even easier clean up!
So the basket holes need to line up with the Water coming in, so that they can go all the way to the bottom and work its way up through the filters and then back out?
Sir I just bought today the same model and loaded trays with ceramic rings, carbon rings and bio balls . My question is can I run it 24/7 all the time and if I run does it run into any issues . By the way very nice video sir . I used your video to setup the filter each and every time pausing and seeing how to fit . Thank you very much sir in advance for the reply
It’s his first canister filter and he did it without reading the instructions (required to retain his man card!). There are easier ways to prime but the rest was on par for a first time setup.
sir, my goldfish tank is 2.5'x 1' x 16.5" (h), 97 liter. Which sun sun model will be suitable sir? Will 302 be overpowering for goldfish for this size tank?
Thank you for your informative video. I also have goldfish and I am switching to a canister system for filtration. I see it's been about 6 months since you posted video. How are your ammonia levels now? Currently I am using a hanging basket filter on a 10 gallon overstocked tank. My room mate surprised me by having me come home to my tank stocked with 7 goldfish. What could I do? I'm working on setting up a planted 30 to 40 gallon tank for them now. Until then I am doing a 15% water change every other day and AMI Ammo-lock to control the ammonia. I've read good things about the Kordon Amquel Plus so I'm going to try that. I need to keep these little guys safe and happy until I get a larger tank up and cycled. Anyways, could you make some comments about controlling the ammonia levels in your tank? Thanks!! Roxan
I use a 1/2 a pound and I change my tank once a month. that works for me... you might have to play around with it to see what works better for your set up
Hey.. I put my ceramic rings on bottom and above that on a 1st tray i put all my 3 white sponges...and above that on 2nd tray i have lava rocks with few ceramic rings...and on the top tray i have activated carbon with ceramic rings...will it work for me?? and also i could hear some noise when you switch on the canister(hope that was empty without water on that time)..Will it be silent later if water start flowing through inlet and outlet pipes??
The purpose if the ceramic ring is to help break up the waste and catch on to it. Lava rocks are good because they have a larger surface area. Get some bio balls instead of using the ceramic ring with the carbon. Did you will the canister with water before you plugged it in? that maybe the issue.. it have to move the water
If I put this in a 20 gallon, it seems overkill but if block the return to reduce the flow, that should be fine right? I've got some really pooper goldfishes
Why did you not use the chart on the box that shows where to put the charcoal and bio media? Box says carbon/charcoal on the top and is you use any chemical, the chemical is on the bottom. Bio media is middle... out so says the HW-302 box. My box says it filters from top down? 🤔 Are you sure this way is correct?
Very informative video. Everything you need to know is in this video. I just bought the 303B so I'm doing a little more research. Thanks for sharing and as always do what you do if it works for you...New subscriber here!
Just got a 29 gallon tank from the dollar per gallon petco sale. Gonna set up a dwarf cichlid tank. Thinking of getting this canister for. Any updates on how it's holding up?
@@LynnisSadler Nice. I think I've watched just about every video on TH-cam regarding this filter haha, I've made my decision, definitely gonna purchase one. Thanks man 👍
Thanks for the video Lynnis! Very detailed and raw. I've been planning to buy a canister filter for a while now, since I got my baby turtle now in my 40g tank. He's getting bigger now so I've decided to research more about canister filters. Couple of questions though, how often do you have to clean your tank and canister filter and what are the procedures you do? Also, is it only that loud in the beginning or does it progressively becomes quieter? Thanks again for the video, really helped me to decide on purchasing this now.
You should lose the pads under your bio media if the 2nd or 3rd basket pads get dirty now you have to remove the media to clean and shorten your hoses you'll get better flow
This filter would work just fine for your aquarium. I have them installed on 29 gallons and I have had no issues with them due to flow rate or anything else.
just angle the sprayer bar up at the surface to create surface agitation. oxygenation is accomplished through surface agitation, so that's all you need.
Lynnis, those plastic bio balls are junk, lose them like a ladies skirt. The ceramic rings you put in the bottom would have been better replacing the bio balls by a factor of at least 10; a little small gravel in the bottom would work better to hold the crud in - the more the better. Cleaning your foam filters and bio rings in the sink will kill the bacteria that is cleaning the water in the tank because of the Chlorine. Get a 5 gallon bucket and siphon a couple of gallons into it from the tank. Use that tank water to wash the heavy crude off of them - repeat a fee times as needed. Use tank water to refill the canister when you are done. Enjoy the hobby!
i put it the tub, i know its carbon, lol.... i dont know why i said that... maybe i bbq too much...lol... hey what I did was run a clear 1/2 tubing from meanards , from the tank to the tub to drain the water

How many days after you will see changes in water quality after installing this filter sir ?
When we buy this filter will that come with the necessary things needed? Like bio nalla etc.
It comes with it in a kit
I have this filter to set up in a couple days . Does the spray bar go under the water or over the water? Thanks
It winds up under the water, especially with a tank with a rim. I angled the holes upward a bit to get better water turbulence.
Thanks for the tutorial! How much outflow (pressure) from the canister? My question- enough to agitate water using reducers? Thanks pal. Thumbs up!
you will not need reducers and it agitate the water
How often should I clean the canister filter sir ?
Once every 3 months for mine
Hi. What is the purpose to put the ceramic ring at the bottom of the filter? It is to slow down the output or what? Thanks
the purpose of doing that is to break up and catch any particles before it hit the pads... it does not slow down the water it swirl around the bottom
Where did you buy this filter at I know this is old ?
Do canister filters flood if there is a powercut?
No, there's valves so they don't.

No.
