    The look of sheer delight on the face of the driver on the Cygnet is priceless. Great video John

      Contrasting with the lead driver.

    I was inspired to make one of your pushers but was unable to find any small bearings until I decided to get some from a pair of roller blades at a local thrift store. While they aren't the smoothest I have ever seen, they seem serviceable for pushing stock squarely into a lathe chuck.
    Thanks for all of the great videos.

    John, great idea with the bearing. Regarding the money, my wife was a Macmillian and Marie Curie nurse. That was a good call young man. Kindest regards from Bonnie Scotland.

    Good idea John with that money - I am often V pissed when I find out that maybe at best 5% of a donation actually goes to the cause. Nurses was a great idea.
    Just love those narrow gauge locos.

    Hey, John, one of your bearing pusher tools was one of my first little jobs when I renewed my interest in machining. I've used it a few times now, in fact I used it only a couple of days ago. The steam engines are cool. Good to see some youngsters involved. Mart.

    John, I was stood just behind your right shoulder while you were sat in the arena this afternoon, so you feature on a number of my short videos of the steam wagons and traction engines. Great day out, and first time I have been to the Masham do in 10 years or so. By the way, I believe it's pronounced "Massam". :)

    I was at Masham today, thought I saw you chomping on a burger. Great day, first time I'd been since they moved it. Preferred the old site but had a good time & bought some nice tools. Love your videos!

    that's the beauty of chuck jaws that can be removed and turned around the other way. gives u a surface to push the against.

    That is a very useful tool ,I'll be copying one from it.thanks for showing it.I like the last bit of the video also, I don't know if it is the same place I visited in the eighties in South Shields,but I love those small trains, my wife is from there.

    I can see giving rides on mini steam trains as a job you would enjoy doing in retirement from time to time.

    TIP - Try a piece of hard wood, like a old broom handle. Keep it short in the tool post and it will do the same thing, but even easier to make and it wont damage soft materials such as aluminum.

    When doing work like this, the best tool for this job is to put a piece of pipe in the back, will run flat every time without touching a bearing.

    Hi,I just stumbled on your videos.I've been a long time fan of Kieth Fenner so I guess you can say he sent me your way.But I really like how you dont muck about.You just rip and run and get things done.I really think some guys on here get a little too carried away with microns when doing a normal job ;)

    I've made one of these with a spare bearing the had been in my 'useful items' box for a while - I'm glad I did... it's been really useful! Now to make an edge finder in SNNC 140 P2. Nice one John. Now where thar other bearing I have?

  • @SteamDriven
    @SteamDriven 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    G'day from down under John... always enjoy your videos. I need to make one of those bearing sticks... been putting it off for too long. Is the size of the ball race bearing important... yours looks like about 1". Again thanks for the videos... oh and the cooking classes !

    Doubtless a useful tool, but in this case wouldn't it have been a whole lot quicker to put the work piece against the face of the chuck?

      I would have been very tempted to chuck as many as I could in the chuck and bore them all in one go, if sizes varied a little aluminium pads on the jaws would have evened it out.

    Have you ever checked to see how much a tight fit on the shaft takes out the clearance in a ball bearing? I’ve ruined a few.
    Great idea using a bearing to straighten work in a chuck, does it work for centering bars side to side as well? Sorry to ask, I am between lathes now.

    flush with the back of the chuck or some small parallel bars to push against.?

    Hi John I notice you have a Harrison lathe like mine. The plastic plate for the rpm on top is broken on mine. Could you show me a picture of the rpm plate. All your video's don't show your lathe.

  • @ZenMinus
    @ZenMinus 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    As far as I can see on the video, you have sufficient space and clearance to place the "washer" at the back of the chuck and use the chuck face to have them "square". Was this to show the push tool or was there a reason you needed to use the front of the chuck jaws?
    Regards
    Peter

    I suppose once you deal with the fact that your bearing tool probably shouldn't work and doesn't make any sense, it works pretty well indeed.

    When it comes to the size of a steam cylinder:
    Yes a 5"gauge loco with a scale cylinder will pull 10 or more people.
    HOWEVER: a full size cylinder (or two) the size of you family dustbin will pull 1000 tons of freight.
    Steam (superheated) cylinders are VERY efficient - pity about the size of the boiler needed!
