I saw this video and am in the process of making a spare tire bracket along the same idea as yours. The biggest difference is I used 1/4"x 3" channel since I had some, and I used two lug nuts that I had laying around. I like those rather than using regular nuts on a wheel. I think the taper of the holes and nuts holds better that way I don't need lock washers. I plan on welding the bolt heads so I won't need two wrenches to get the spare off.
