    I'd lock that lug wrench. Stuff like that tends to grow legs easily. Even worse you supplying the tools for your spare to disappear.

    20:10 I like how you left a gap at the bottom of the tube so water won't pool up in the holder. Suggestion: Further modify it so the lug wrench/nuts can't be used to steal the tire.

    Perhaps, color code the tip of the lug wrench for the end that fits the camper, using tape or spray paint? Great Job, Mr. Booth!!!

      Just weld a small knob of weld metal on the correct socket, lets you find it in the dark.

    That spare tire carrier turned out real sweet, same with the lug wrench holder. Now think about locking them onto the carrier so as they do not develop legs and hike out on you. Would like to see a lock nut w/key on your spare tire and something on that lug wrench w/key also.

    Great upgrade. Maybe color the end of your 4 way lug wrench just to make it that much easier to locate your size. The one that tire holder that came with your camper just shows you that most employees don't put any pride into their work. I bet if it was for them, it would look better. My old boss of 40 years ago made me get into a habit of always do for the customer that do it like it was going into your own home, God rest his sole. Have been doing everything that wayon everything. And clean up better than the way it was before you got there. Thanks for sharing Adam. Stay safe.

    I'd agree with Neo. Rather than dealing with a pin and cotter pin, I would put a lock through that hole or you may lose both the wrench and your spare tire when you're not looking. Very nice project.

    I have a cargo rack that came on the back of my 2021 Surveyor. Spare tire came mounted to that rack which made the rack heavy to tilt down to use and the spare tire would be hanging down in the way and looking like total crap. I cut the tire mount off the rack, beefed up my front battery rack by welding on some heavier gauge angle iron and then rewelded the same tire rack under the battery rack and front tongue of my trailer. Worked out awesome and love it out of the dang way. Repainted it all and it looks stock. Rear of my Surveyor looks %100 better as well.

    I used a stub axle and hub rather than a flat plate to mount mine on my boat trailer, that way if I chew up a bearing on the road, I can just swap out the hub.

      I also drilled one lug at the end and put a padlock thru it ,, it wont stop everyone but it helps

    Made in Goshen Indiana, yea they have contracts with welding shops to turn out those things by the hundreds and depending on what shop makes it you can get some decent welds and you can get some awful welds. The RV industry is enormous in Northern Indiana so the same shops that make them for one RV manufacturer also make them for others. You can't go 10 miles without seen a billboard looking to hire welders and assemblers for RV stuff in this area.

    For my boat trailer I did it almost the same as you, I did use the same wheel nuts that was on the trailer (2 Size Heads)
    But the main diff was I added a centre hub wheel support to make it easy to reinstall and took the weight off the wheel nuts which saves the threads from damage when you move the wheel, its been on there for almost 10 years (And yes for those people, the wheel has been used many times)

  • @garymucher9590
    @garymucher9590 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Abom, I did something very similar to my boat trailer. I did the circle idea with three studs as well coming through to match the bolt pattern of the wheel, but mounted mine horizontally on the trailer tongue just shy the tongue metal, so the tire doesn't take a shape tightened against the metal. But since I would be gone fishing from the trailer, I made two lug nuts welded to two 90 degree brackets with a drilled hole in them to lined up for a lock to fit through. It keeps anyone from getting the spare tire/wheel assembly and tightens the tire in place as well. It looks so nice and quality and I don't see how anyone could get the tire/wheel off and still be usable... Thumbs Up!

  • @bcbloc02
    @bcbloc02 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    Could have ordered up an extra spindle and hub that matches your trailer and used that to mount your spare. Then you would have those spare parts with you as well. Most trailer bearings have a tendency to fail from time to time thanks to their high side loads and the beatings they take on rough roads.

  • @danmooney6881

  • @matttradie1341
    @matttradie1341 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Nice job. A good way to put a spare wheel on a trailer is to use a old axle stub with a new hub and set of bearings so if you need a new stub hub or bearings on the road then your ready to go. Hints for real remote area towing really. Sometimes u break off a stud or two its easier to have a new hub to just put on.

    awesome spare tire mount Adam

  • @Garth2011
    @Garth2011 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Very cool build. Just the right material to handle the load/job which the original mount was not. The fact that the original bumper and tire carrier are made of too thin a material for the job, unless the trailer will be towed on a plat of glass it's entire life, simply shows how much RV builders really dig when designing their products. We all know they need to watch out for weight and cost but, at some point, certain items just don't have room for those considerations. Love the star lug wrench mount idea Adam, good thought. If some wiggling still occurs, maybe sandwich a piece of flat stock in between the factory bumper and your heavy hitch bar. That may take out a little bit of flutter the tire still has some of the jiggles. I'd have to bet the factory didn't get the tolerances as close as you did with the machine shop shims/blocks and squares !

  • @brianoz2brn976
    @brianoz2brn976 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Gread video, Adam ! -tech tip: For the one of the four ends of the log wrench you will be using, wrap a color coded electrical tape around that wrench leg for quick identification of your go-to size. Being stuck in the side of the road is bad enough, but having to find the right size in darkness, rain or traffic is even worse :). Thanks again for great videos, keep posting and I sincerely hope you enjoy the camper life :) cheers from Brian

    Nice work! I did something similar on our pop up camper. I travel with two spare tires, a set of bearings and an extra hub assembly. Maybe overkill, but I hate being stuck anywhere. We traveled from Indiana to Grayton Beach S.P. last fall with no issues. The original spare tire mount was pretty sorry on your camper, and may have failed. Hopefully we can all get back to camping soon.

    Mark the lug wrench with a bit of tape to show which socket to use. One less thing to thing about when changing a tyre in the dark and wet. Also use one of the other holes in the hub to devise some sort of locking mechanism so no one steals the tyre.

  • @airmail793

    Get a black rubber bungie cord to hold the lug wrench. Bolt the bottom end to the upright and keep the hook on the top end to hook on the wrench. It will hold the wrench down and rattle less than a bolt and cotter key that you are going to drop in the dark and not find. The end result looks great!

    That last lug might want to get a keyed nut. Unfortunately there are still people out there that take things simply for the challenge of taking. Maybe cross-drill one of the bolts and padlock it? Perhaps something similar on the wrench 'tube' to effectively wedge it in place. Awesome work way better than the 'stock' mount.

    A flat tire tip from a guy who has had it happen. Go into your wheel well and line the upper part with at least 1/8th inch plate to protect your camper floor. The small bit of added weight is worth it. I had a tire lose the tread and it ripped out the whole section of floor, plumbing and wire for the furnace. We had to replace the complete furnace. Thank goodness for insurance because it was about $8000 in damages because the wheel well is only lined with particle board.
    Cheers and happy camping

    when your welding the high tensile bolts in place to the back plate - really need to strip the bolts of their zinc or protective coating. When you add heat to them I believe it creates phosgene gas. Effectively mustard gas - can kill you

    I haven't seen welds that bad since my first attempt with a cheep 110 flux core MIG. It took a few attempts, but I got to a point where I could make a decent weld with it.

    Adam maybe if you drill a hole in your wheel stud you can fit a padlock to it for security to stop someone stealing your spare

    That mount will hold a spare car onto the trailer, let alone a spare tire! Beautiful :D
    What was the spraying at 16:20? Welder maintenance, obviously, but what exactly?

      My best guess would be it is to keep the flux splatter from gumming up the cup.

    Does suck to worry about theft. In-laws have a motor home and were in FL at a fish camp and went out for the day fishing, place theyve been going to for ages, came back and someone stole all their gas cans, full and empty. Camper was locked but Im sure some of the storage compartments were open who knows what else could have gotten poached. Shame that it is that way but you could see someone just swiping the damn four way just to swipe it.
