    Unrelated to this video but i have to say it. What you do here is amazing and i hope people at adobe take notice of this. Because AE and PR users feel absolutely left alone and not supported at all. Seeing that here is a tool with its own "representative" producing content, answering questions, taking notes and feature requests, discusses upcoming features and statuses is an amazing thing.

    • @okaysamurai
      @okaysamurai  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You could still use swap sets with this, but it would be a pretty heavy and complex system (imagine drawing each unique point, palm flip, etc for each position). If using a swap set I’d probably do a much more limited version of this, with maybe 3 arm positions max (down, out, up).

    All of the examples I've seen include the hand as part of the art for the arm, but i use swap sets to change out the hands all the time. How would this work with swapping out the hands? open and closed, pointing, thumbs up, etc?

    • @okaysamurai
      @okaysamurai  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Each artwork instance would need its own hand swapset, and then you would need to add all of those instances to a trigger. So for example, I might have 10 right arm positions, each with a "hand" group inside, and each with default, point, closed, etc inside. Then I would make a hand swapset like normal, but add all those hand instances into each trigger - so a "point" trigger would have 10 layers listed in its "layers and replays" in the triggers panel. A little confusing but hope that makes sense!

    Ok Samuarai, you rock! Thanks so much. I hope I get to meet you one day. I use your videos all the time and find daily inspiration from the stuff you do. Thank you.
    Quick question if you have time: in the Ai puppet file, I understand why there are 10 different phases for each arm. But what is the benefit of having “arm” and “sleeve” as two different layers within each phase folder?

    • @okaysamurai
      @okaysamurai  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for the kind words. I think that's just the way the artist set their artwork up, making it potentially easier to work on each asset individually. But if these were just one layer apiece it would still be totally fine.

    what i think CH really needs is about 10 base body characters where we users can just change colors body clothing and fully be able to customize the characters ourselves with few clicks. Make it more user-friendly.I know new update has a costomizable user friendly mode, but it needs to be incorporated to main CH( very good start) Dont get me wrong creating from scratch is great, but not many are trying to dig around and create layers, tag them, etc. in any case Thanks Dave this is still huge improvement

  • @TonesOverthinksIt

    Are there any plans to update these tutorials? some of them are out of date. I am currently rigging a puppet the same way and have run into some issues, first the arms still stretch as far as I drag the wrist despite every arm getting tagged with shoulder, elbow, and wrist. The other issue is that as I drag the wrist around in any way other than the arm outstretched, it either fails to change to follower I want or changes to one I don't because of how close together they are. I'm trying to use a puppet with 6 different arm sets on each side. Is there any way to create areas that limit what sets can swap in and out depending on where you drag the wrist?

    • @okaysamurai
      @okaysamurai  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Any tutorials that are out of date should say "Archived" in the title, but the main ones should still be accurate outside of some cosmetic changes. For the first issue, I'd rewatch the Limb IK tutorial to make sure everything is set up like the example there. And then for the auto-swap, I've found myself making extra arms to fill in all the inbetween states, because if things aren't switching it doesn't think things are different enough yet to swap to other artwork, so adding more layers can help with that. If the problems persist, please upload a video or screenshot of your issue to adobe.com/go/chfeedback and we'll try to help you out.

      @@okaysamurai thanks, to be honest I'm starting to think Character Animator doesn't offer what I need, it's great for head turn and lip syncing, but I need more precise animation and with the absence of a bone tool and no way to just pose and key frame animation I may have to look elsewhere like Animate or After Effects. Though I am considering perhaps just drawing a set of arms in static poses and then using keys to swap between them that way i get the pose I want instantly every time. The animation won't be fluid but I've seen plenty of people pull it off like Nick Hodges over on History Buffs.

    My puppet switches arms (between the 2 drawings I have added) BUT once it switches to the 2nd drawing, I can no longer drag to move the arm so I can't have the puppet gesture and I can't get the first arm back. In fact, anytime I drag the arm, it snaps to the 2nd drawing immediately. Both wrist points are called HandR. I only have the first one tagged as Draggable. Could you include some troubleshooting tips to your videos??

    I Like this new feature. It give you more of a controlled version of the cycle layers behavior where you can start and stop at any point. I may try this with legs might lead to actions such as Kicks if done right. I also like how it can lead to future developed features such as forward walking, to consistency on each view (Example you have a hand raised in front view, it maintains that when switching character views). However I feel like this feature is only limited or beneficial to a front view of a character. MY question is how this can be beneficial towards other character views?

    • @okaysamurai
      @okaysamurai  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      While I think the easiest way to show the feature off is a front view, I think there’s a ton of creative possibilities that we haven’t even seen yet regardless of views. I’m really excited to see what people do with it once they dig into it - this is a super powerful feature!

    Hi! I was wondering if for a puppet there's more than one layer in a limb like for example the upper arm and forearm are 2 different layers do I need to make the elbow on one of them a leader and the elbow on the other one a follower?

    • @okaysamurai
      @okaysamurai  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You can do either way. I would say most puppets have just one layer for the arms, but you could have two arm parts. Here's an example puppet with it split into 2 parts: drive.google.com/file/d/1jisq1hCruiniTMsiZIuUZAtv6brJ5mD1/view?usp=sharing

      I would probably use the head/body turner behavior for that, or manually trigger all the states instead. Auto swap is more about something changing as it moves from one XY position to another, so the head and body are most likely going to share the same position and probably wouldn't work as well here.

    Awesome feature! A true game changer there.
    For someone who's interested to make a "vtuber" model, one of the things is concerning is the fluidity, mainly the hair and head.
    Since I'm a newbie could you answer if the auto swap feature could make it more fluid?
    Because the head paralax and head motion still feels kinda "stiff", compared to Live 2D.

    • @okaysamurai
      @okaysamurai  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Auto swap can definitely make things more fluid, but you have to supply it with all the different artwork, and typically faster motions will look better and hide the artwork transitional "jumps." But I don't think it will give you a true smooth parallax look.

    Hi David. I have gotten a lot from your videos. I have a problem though. My character animator does not give me a leader/follower behavior tag option. It just doesn't seem to exist. The good people at adobe haven't been able to help me either. I don't know if you have come across this bug yet. But would sure love some help. Even using the armando puppet is impossible. When put into scene his arms do not even appear.

    Newbie Question...What is the suggested best method of setting up a keyboard trigger to have a arm/hand point to a different location?
    For example I want to have a trigger to point at the 'first bullet point' on the screen, another to point at the 'second bullet' point...so as the vo plays and refers to a specific point, I can hit a key to trigger the point that is being discussed.
    Many thanks!

      Sure, you could record poses for a rigged character and go to File > Export > Frame to export an image. But you would probably be better off using something like Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator or Fresco to do that.

I do understand that different characters have different triggers but that's very limiting. Is there some way I could borrow a sad mouth from the other characters or something. I have been searching for days now. There are some essentials and I think Sad Mouth shape is an essential every character should have don't you think?

    Woooow, this is amazing. I kept wondering if this was possible somehow. I don’t really use body tracking partly because of this arm swapping thing. Otherwise I need to use a Bluetooth number pad and hit triggers every time an arm raises. Can’t wait to use this! Also can’t wait to see all the ways it can be tricked out to do other things. So I guess puppets with arms/etc setup with this won’t work in the regular version until it’s permanent huh?

    Please add paralax effect and 3d spacing layers if possible (forground and background), and also the parappa the rappa flat 3d paperlike effect to take full advantage of the bones and joints mechanisim. Your system i feel would be an entry to the mocap 3d in the future- for facial animation and body animation. Does this work well also with the kinrect camera for capturing or it isnt necessary to use it?

    • @okaysamurai

      Kinect isn't necessary, any webcam will work. You can do a lot of 3D spacing in After Effects, which is what we would recommend for that kind of compositing (dynamic link your CH character into AE and use 3D layers).
