    Hello everyone, in this video I'll try to demonstrate how to get the ILS needle working which was asked after the first video. I'm not doing anything special than tuning the ILS frequency but hopefully this will answer the question., Enjoy!

    An ILS would have been a luxury in the years I flew it in the mid 1960's as we only had Localiser for approaches. :o)

      Oh yeah, I kinda find it odd to have GPS in a classic bird.

      @@TheSimPilot The DC-3 that I flew 1,000 hours in was the favourite of all our pilots out of the rest.
      We didn't find out it was a pre WW2 aircraft (Wright Cyclone 9 cylinder engines), General MacArthur flew in it in ww2.
      I went to visit it a few months back VH-ANR.

    Nice video! I've been learning this plane and have struggled with how the old school navigation works. This helped it click for me. Thank you!

    yo, great video, i got a question that i cant figure out, how would you compensate for the wind drifting you off-course while doing long distance flights in the dc3? like i get you can just solve the vectors on a map with pen and paper, but how would you know the direction and magnitude of the wind while flying long distance away from airports?

    • @TheSimPilot
      @TheSimPilot  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey thank you very much. I guess the easiest way is to fly the needle while tracking a VOR station. Keeping the needle centered on your set course will help you stay on course and see how many degrees to left or right is required to correct for wind. If you're asking for VFR flight then I guess you need to keep an eye on your VFR landmarks to ensure your direction of travel is towards your destination.

    • @SkylordNiko
      @SkylordNiko ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheSimPilot yeah that is the simplest way and makes sense, i was thinking like flights across the ocean where theres no VORs or vfr points of reference, it just puzzles me how they could keep correct heading without knowing wind direction, i guess they could approximate the magnitude by how far its blowing them off heading? even then the aircraft could be pointed in the correct heading but still have a lateral vector from the wind right, sorry im just vomiting my thoughts as i learn to fly this thing xD

      @@SkylordNiko I guess celestial navigation was a thing in aviation back in those days. Maybe that's how they did it without knowing for sure.

      sorry to bother you, I got the ILS lateral needle working OK, but not the vertical one, it stays put in the middle. Any tip? Thanks@@TheSimPilot

    • @TheSimPilot

      @@sergiofachinetti4882 You're not bothering at all it is very interesting. One thing that comes to my mind is that DC-3 has an enhanced version that you can download from marketplace. Do you have that installed? That could be the reason if you don't have the enhanced version.

    You should not unlock the tailwheel until you are in the safe taxi speed. Also, keep the tail up also until safe taxi speed, otherwise you'll lose directional control at high speed and it will be even worse with the tailwheel unlocked just like what you experience in this video.

    • @TheSimPilot
      @TheSimPilot  ปีที่แล้ว

      That explains why I am having so much trouble with tail draggers. Couldn't control after landing and thought tail wheelmight help. Apparently I was wrong. Thanks for the info!

      Add a bit of throttle to get a sustained air flow to keep rudder working, that should prevent the tail from going over the head.

    • @TheSimPilot
      @TheSimPilot  ปีที่แล้ว

      Some others reported the same issue. I am not sure what's causing this. I am not able to pinpoint the issue

    • @billolgaau
      @billolgaau ปีที่แล้ว

      When I flew the real thing the localiser was all we had.
      I haven't checked there may be a setting for ILS.

    I don't know what happens with the Douglas DC3, after take off while climbing it leans sharply to the left and crashes. I can't get it to fly. Thank you for the video.

    • @TheSimPilot
      @TheSimPilot  ปีที่แล้ว

      It usually leans left if the pitch is too much and speed gets close to stall speed. I had that couple times where trimming was a challenge and as speed dropped below 80 - 90 MPH it starts to drop the left wing and nose dive. Keep an eye on the speed gauge and make sure to keep it above 112 MPH.
