According to one sports writer Walter demanded that Wayne and his brothers do drills on the ice after they came home from school.
Other kids were having fun in their free time before dinner but if that story is true for Wayne and his brother it wasn't pure fun - it was training.
It wouldn't be too surprising - a lot of successful athletes and entertainers had parents who were focused on the potential career of their children from a time they were a young age.

Look what went on with Crosby even in his prime years when he was being like cheap shotted hard and got a couple concussions as a result right in his prime to that shit in all likelihood deducted no less then 150 total potential would have been sure thing additional goals from his own career and id guess reason he was targeted was because yeah bit of jealousy or resentment at a hot shot young kid getting lots of praise and attention and sponsors etc. Fortunately worked out in the end for him to just passed his 500th goal and is well on his way to fellow all time great status but point is sounds like what they did to Gretzkys lil bro they were also doing to Crosby for while in the NHL as well. Anyways Gretzkys dad seems like cool dude for sure and Gretzky will always be #1 followed very closely I think by Lemieux heck Lemieux did as great as he did with missing a crap load of time for injuries/ health crisis's
/ bad luck etc. over his career as well and probably played what like 3-400+ fewer games then other fellow legends/ greats of the sport like Jágr or Gretzky himself! just imagine how many goals and assists and points Lemieux would have potentially/likely had had he not had to retire early or had some bad luck with injuries and played at least a full 70-all 82 games for like 20 straight seasons! thats a scary thought actually lol cause even as is with how much fewer games total he played then a lot of others his stats are still among the greatest ever and near the top of the iceberg Hockey p4p wise. Now I can understand like legitimate instances of you know say a hot shot rookie or new prodigy on the team/block having to prove himself and Earn respect with fellow teammates especially and to some extent league wide as well sure that happens all the time, but there's definitely a line and just straight up endlessly ragging on someone constantly for there family affiliation or based purely and exclusively off of genuine jealousy bitterness resentment etc. is just flat out lame very not masculine behavior actually surprisingly from athletes of all things at times.

Someone I knew mentioned a few times that he played against Gretzky around this time.
He was sort of proud that against the rules his team was paying him a few dollars a game to play so he figured that when he played against Wayne he was getting paid more than Gretzky to play (assuming that Wayne wasn't taking money under the table and I'm sure he wouldn't).
He said that before the game his coach warned the team that there was a really good player named Gretzky on the other team and that they shoukd watch out for him but that the players being young and immature didn't pay any attention to what the coach said. They were one of the best teams in one of the best if not the best leagues for teenagers in Canada so they were used to playing against very good players and didn't realize how good Wayne was.
Gretzky got a couple of goals against them which isn't spectacular but then if he was getting two or three goals every game and he's playing against players older then himself then that is spectacular.

Just a small anecdote on how cool 99 is...I played a lot of hockey, and even though I'm a lifetime Rangers fan, of course I loved Gretzky. In 1981 I wrote to him, telling him I played and he's an inspiration etc. You know how it is when you wrote a celebrity in the old days, you'd get a form letter and photo, nothing personal. He actually sent me a few photos and wrote "Good going Steven!" on one. I'm sure he did that for everyone, but even taking the time for what had to be endless letters that he'd receive, and writing something that meant he read my letter, it really floored me. Still have the pic of course. 🏒
