I've come up with a set of rules that describe our reactions to technologies:
    1. Anything that is in the world when you’re born is normal and ordinary and is just a natural part of the way the world works.
    2. Anything that's invented between when you’re fifteen and thirty-five is new and exciting and revolutionary and you can probably get a career in it.
    3. Anything invented after you're thirty-five is against the natural order of things.

If there was some kind of analog to it by the time I was 20-25, I appear to be able to "acquire" it. There was e-mail and usenet by that time, so I seem to be able to wrap my head around Twitter and Dreamwidth and so on. Video technology existed, and people who would talk to me, so Vlogbrothers makes sense. There were videogames and people who loved them, so Jacksepticeye? Groovy. But I can't figure out selfies and I don't own a cellphone and dread the day I will finally have to get one.

I felt the same way about this year’s P4A. This was either my 3rd or 4th year participating, but it was the first year I was able to watch most of the stream (no school or work), and I participated in the chat much more than usual. I live a life where I don’t really talk openly with others, due to social anxiety and trauma, and this was the first time I felt truly connected to other people in a long time. Everyone was SO supportive and kind to each other. It was just incredible seeing such a large group of people coming together to decrease world suck. P4A is the best time of the year 💕 on another note, this was the first year where I was financially able to donate enough to buy a perk, and it felt SO GOOD finally seeing my name on the lower third! Even though I didn't get internet until a bit over 20 years ago, and by that point it was not green letters black screen...
(It was, gods spare me, Netscape Navigator and Yahoo chat rooms)
...still it was a similar experience for me in that I had friends. A ton of friends. Sudden friends, fleeting friends, lifelong friends. More interaction and socialization than I had ever experienced in my life. Not all of it healthy, not all of it safe, but every moment was precious. The memories still are. I learned so much in the first six months of being "out in the wild" of the Internet. It was the first time that people saw me, not as the short, somewhat fluffy, horribly awkward girl, but as a person, an individual, and one that they wanted to know more about.
Heady stuff for a kid like me, even if I was already in college by then. I was still very much a little kid, developmentally stunted I guess, but on the inside.
And now, I watch this video, as I wait for the heart surgeons to finish their work on my husband, and take comfort from this same connection, ghostly as it is. People from all over the country have wished me and my husband well during this time; even as he was being prepped this morning I was receiving messages of support and love. Nothing else but those friends has gotten me through the past week of tests and preparation. Though I'm still trembling in fear of what might happen next, I know that I'll be able to make it through.
What you fear about the Internet is also what you love about it - and it's the human beings behind the screens, that's what fuels both my joy and terror. I'm so glad that you and Hank are among those who share untarnished joy with us.

Hopefully you have lots of mild activities to help him through recovery. I've had a few surgeries and once the anesthesia wears off, my brain is ready and raring to go -at least it is in fits and starts. Unfortunately, there are always physical limits after surgery.
SG-1 got me through one recovery.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer got me through another (I really didn't think I'd like a series about teenage vampires, but a friend strongly encouraged me to give it a chance, and in fact I really enjoyed it).
Doctor Who got me through my latest recovery.
They were all mentally engaging enough, that I didn't feel like I'd go insane, and when my energy started to wain they were easy enough to pause and come back to after a quick nap.
I would have loved to have done some reading, but the first two surgeries left me in an odd position so I couldn't hold up a book for more than a few minutes. After the most recent surgery, I had friends with me almost non-stop during recovery, so we got to bond even more over Doctor Who.

I did P4A the first year (recently I found all my old comments on videos!), and I still absolutely love the concept, and it's amazing to see how it's grown from just "let's replace all the boob thumbnails on TH-cam's front page with actual nonprofits" to "we raise a ton of money and do a livestream and make a big amazing thing."
I was juuuust lucky enough that my dad worked in tech in the late 80s/early 90s and we had a dedicated landline just for internet in the house. It meant that I pretty much never had to worry about getting kicked off the internet, even back when my computer was black & white and friends would call you to tell you to get online. ICQ and AIM were such a large part of my lifeline to the world back then it's amazing to see that I owe learning how to use the internet early my whole career and friendships and relationship. Anyway, I'm rambling but yes, the internet. I love it.

Obviously, that conversation was pretty memorable. It was only a couple years after that that I was introduced to the internet and got my first email address. I'm roughly half the age she was when we had that conversation, so I'm sure there are many more changes yet for me to experience!

I have that same nostalgia for the internet of 20 years ago. I'm also grateful that I was a fully-formed adult when I started using it - that I have a clear memory of pre-internet days. I'm grateful that I remember that we all hated meanness towards others from day one, and had that naiveté that it would never be normal. I'm grateful to remember that it isn't.
I'm grateful to know now that any words that a person wouldn't say to my face are meaningless. That that hate is a weird psychological tricking of the brain, where some feel like there's not a real person on the other end - just words on a screen.
And I'm grateful to know now that the things that people would say to me, say to anyone, are valuable and cherished. That the internet has also evolved to be one of the best ways for people to connect with and help each other. That there's so much beauty to experience because of the internet, and that I get to participate in it all. That so much knowledge is available right here, right now.
Now we just need the wisdom to go with all of that.
It took years to learn all this, and I hope that people who've never know a world without the internet will learn that quicker than I did.

Ha! Funny story from the early days of dial-up internet (pay-by-the-minute internet over a telephone line).
You'd actually need a separate telephone line to have internet, or you weren't able to make/receive phone calls while you were online.
We had that, fortunately, but my parents told us that we couldn't go on the internet because it became expensive fast if you stayed online for any number of time. And us kids didn't know how to type fast. We just did the 2-or-3-finger typing where you had to "hunt down" each letter on the keyboard.
So, in the mid-to-late 90 when I was in 6th grade the beaurocracy finally caught onto the fact that the internet wasn't just some fluke and that they really better train their students on it.
They pretty much threw any teacher at this that would volunteer for it, because it wasn't really something that teachers had been trained for yet. The internet was that new.
In my grade, there were 4 classes. Like, class 6a, 6b, etc.
When I signed up for the IT class, my classmates and I were the last ones in the week to have our first IT lesson. So, during the week, we'd ask the other 3 classes in our grade what they were doing in IT.
"Machine typing", was the answer from all 3. This was good! I'd finally be able to go on the internet at home, because I'd finally learn something usefull in school!
None of that math nonsense that I'd never use - a real, applicable skill!
I'd been telling my parents all about it the entire week, looking forward to IT class, and then it came and went and it wasn't machine typing. We'd do some basic SQL or HTML coding, which, in reality, was just re-typing the textbook into the computer.
It was boring as hell, since back then you didn't have affordable hosting services for your own website. In essence, I learned how to code a very basic webpage, which, again, was something I couldn't use in real life.
Machine typing - or the 10-finger-system as it is called here - would have been much better. It was far more basic, any teacher could walk their class through that.
Why was my teaching lady not giving us these lessens as well? We thought she was being overly ambitious, like she wanted to brag to the other teachers that "her" students were able to code, or something.
After a couple of weeks, the class broke down and we voiced this to her. Why, why Mrs. Teacher, can't we learn the 10-finger-system of machine typing that everyone else gets to learn? It's really usefull.
I never forget her response, because she actually cursed. It was always weird when an adult cursed in front of kids, particularly in school. It virtually never happened.
Our teacher lifted her hands in front of herself, so we could see that she was missing a digit on her left hand.
9-fingered, she looked us dead in the eyes and went "10-finger-system, my ass!", turned her back and left us standing there agape.
    :D

That Wordsworth quote has been my mood regarding social media for a few years now. It’s why I have to keep taking breaks from twitter-the scroll is never ending, even in my mind. It’s too much within me.
Bo Burnham also had a good quote about social media integrating into how we perceive the world “the feeling of walking through your life and not just living your life, but taking inventory of your life, living and at the same hovering behind yourself and watching yourself live, being nostalgic for moments that havent happened yet, planning your future to look back on... those are really weird, strange dissociative things that are, I think, new, because of the specific structure of social media and the way it disassociates ourself from ourself”

Obviously his was before TH-cam, Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, Reddit, Netflix, Amazon existed. What did I do online? I remember chatting with my friends on ICQ and on forums but there was not that that much going on when browsing the web. Except learning about the weather in Beijing.

I hope things are well! 💛 I unfortunately couldn’t watch the P4A livestream this year (gunna watch the playbacks slowly but surely haha), but it really is one of my favorite times of year. It’s just a pocket of uplifting ridiculousness and the whole internet could do with a bit more of that. Maybe that’s why I miss you, since you add joy to my Internet experience - but it’s more important you add joy to your own life and share it in appropriate spaces/amounts, like vlogbrothers. Yikes, got rambly. See you next video, John!!! ☺️

One of the questions on the 2018 Nerdfighteria Census was whether I'm more of a Hank or a John. I'm very involved in science and education and online video and science education VIA online video, but... in my heart I'm much more of a John, and I never feel more that way than when I watch videos like this. Thank you for sharing those things with the world so people like me can feel just a little bit more connected. It means a lot.

Ah, the good 'ol sound of dial-up... I have to admit that sometimes I miss it, but I also like having super fast wifi. There are pros and cons to the internet, and I have to say, P4A is definitely one of the biggest pros in my book. I always like hanging out in the chat during the live stream, even if I really should be working on something else. It is an event that stresses me out (reminds me that finals are coming up) but at the same time, it is just so relaxing to chat with people like that. This year, I found out about Pink Fluffy Unicorns... *mind blown* it is amazing to see how things are live, even though I won't be able to watch it at 1.5 speed until it has been archived. There is just something about being in the moment via the internet that makes P4A that much more special.

My earliest internet memory is when an article on the news talked about a science project of slicing a human body into separate images, and I wanted to see that in more detail, and there were "high" resolution images online of them free for anybody to have a look at. I thought it was amazing that you didn't have to wait for days, weeks, or months for it to appear in a magazine you had to locate and pay for if you even remembered you were looking for it. It was immediacy, it was more detail, it was for niche interests, everything I still love about the internet.
