Respect to Hank for openly admitting that the internet needs to change, truly a madlad.
Thanks for the honesty in this one, Hank. It's so hard to admit when the messy things we want don't line up with our ideals. But I DO love internet mess sometimes. I keep reading internet drama and falling down rabbit holes for a REASON and it's not going away pretending it's not. Looking forward to the newsletter.
One thing that had a big impact for me was the YT frontpage versus YT subscriptions page: Frontpage is algorithm. Subscriptions page is simply the newest videos from my subscriptions. That inspired me to identify and label all algorithms that I frequent, and change my bookmarks. Now I'm reminded by my bookmark every time I click into an algorithm page. And I try to make non-algorithm pages my standard bookmarks.
I love the subscriptions page of youtube. Highly recommend people switch to it if they haven't yet. Glad it helped you work out a better way to internet!
I've gone so far as to start using startpage as a Google search proxy, thus removing the algorithm from my search results. It has some downsides, but overall I like it so far.
It helps if you keep removing videos from your video history too like so much of it is connected to clickbait unrelated to anything you want to watch that it's good to start again and clean your video history. Anything you watch that's out of the ordinary just remove it after it keeps everything relevant in your recommended videos. I know it's taking views away but unfortunately it gives me no choice when if you watch a video on a certain topic even once it assumes you always want to keep watching it too, no i do not. I'm not sure if john and hank are aware but these videos are also attached to a lot of clickbait too i've removed everything else from my history but i'm still getting videos about lost memory functions, lacking motivation, or about other facts that aren't that interesting.
It is indeed a thing they have done before. It has been dubbed "The Format" they only break it out every so often but It's always fun when they do. It's usually John and his 30ft microphone cord doing the format.
Can't stress enough how much I love the format. Please never stop. Also it was very pleasant to receive a random "We're Here" newsletter the other day and even more pleasant to hear the intent behind it
My first thought when watching videos like this where the location keeps changing but the person narrating makes the transition seem so seamless always makes me appreciate just how much work has to go into making a simple 4 minute video. Being able to maintain your train of thought while moving and setting up your camera several times in multiple different places is just...yeah. it's so impressively not necessary and yet awesome at the same time.
When I start to feel overwhelmed by the impending sense of dread that nothing matters and there's no point to anything, I get out my journal and I write: we're here because we're here because we're here because we're here.
Exactly what I was thinking when he was talking. I have purposely weened myself off FB and Twitter and never started TikTok. Being at the whim of the algorithms was not good for this ADHD-I gal.
@@AndreaCrisp There’s a reason my husband calls TikTok, ADHD TV. I actually went cold turkey on TikTok because I got super depressed but it’s lured me back in recently. 😞
2:08 I just made a sound of pure joy that I've never made before and I'm all alone in my room putting off getting ready for work and when you put your whole head in the thing it gave me so so so many happy feelings ❤
Hi Hank! I have a suggestion (or maybe a request?) for another form of communication. When I open up my web browser at work, I'm presented with a bunch of stuff that microsoft thinks would be interesting for me to see. Is there any chance that the contents of the newsletter could be wrapped up into website form for me to stick as my homepage? Human curated current events sounds like a great thing. I get distracted a lot, and if I'm gonna be distracted, I'd feel good about DFTBA distracting me in directions that suck less.
I keep feeling that it would be nice for webrings to make a comeback. Humans interlinking independent but connected websites rather than automating it all. Then those rings could be stacked together onto pages, either manually or by curators.
The algorithm has done a great disservice to mutual understanding and accurate information. Instead of reasonable, well sourced claims being shared, the posts that are quick to consume and cause the most emotional impact will be what engages people and "trend" to the top. This is resulting in the rapid spread of misinformation and shaping of opinions on important topics that people should be engaging much more directly with to be forming opinions on and not getting it through scrolling, getting takes from other trapped in that same cycle, spinning their bias... It's really upsetting the amount of division and extremism it's creating even within a given "side" of a topic or political spectrum. People will fall into a hole that feeds them more and more of the information they believe in, pushing them further and further that way until the point where hearing any counter information then feels like an attack and makes them feel outraged at you for daring even say something else, where they now believe something so whole heartedly that there's no amount of information you could provide that would change their mind because they've been fed a constant stream of emotionally manipulative material that has created an undeniable sense of truth in their mind. I don't know how we step back from this. But videos like this can definitely help. The more people who discuss it, the more people's minds can hopefully be opened up to take everything with a grain of salt and verify before believing.
Id like to publicly thank you and John for being people who are both wildly successful, affluent people and also who spend a large portion of their time trying to make the world better. I am feeling particularly saddened by those who are in position to do significant good, but choose not to. you two are beautiful examples of people who try, and that is so extremely encouraging to me on a daily basis.

Okay. I signed up for the newsletter. I found it unsettling and yet at the same time satisfying to have a machine tell me that I have been successfully identified as a human. External validation!
This spark you are talking about, we all feel it. I have been following your stuff for years and I like it, but the internet has felt distant and invasive at the same time throughout. What is happening with AI is bringing this dynamic closer to something that feels deeply human, the connection that the likes are emulating, the thrills of acknowledgement thrown about by virality and algorithmic trends, are all intensifying and as I am using autocorrect to fix my bad spelling, the merge of man and machine is evident and engulfing. I am grateful that you are trying to grasp some of this human experience, and I hope your project will bring you closer to making sense of all this. Hank and John, keep it up.
As someone who started an email list to talk about "Seconds" and how to be "Second" and own that, I am 10,000% in on Curation. One of the values of curation (like choosing to get notifications that YOU posted a video and watching this instead of scrolling around) is that I've also determined (as I think this community has) that certain artists and causes and ideas deserve attention... and many do not. And these feel like they DO.
This whole video is giving 'eat Peeps on the street with strangers' energy in the midst of 2020s 'The Format'. I feel like I just experienced 15 years of Vlogbrothers in 4 minutes and 47 seconds.
I’ve been really concerned with how much time I spend online, specifically TH-cam. I don’t have friends or socialize, watching videos is my way of coping with life. Not really sure why I vented or if anyone feels similar- I feel like I lost control over myself and idk how to undo it.
I don't fully know the way out either, but I just want you to know that you're not alone in using the internet to cope with life. I feel like that a lot of times too. I started going to Yin Yoga classes recently, and I think that's helping. Even if part of the time my mind is swirling around the twitch stream I was watching or the video game I was playing beforehand, with regular practice I'm gradually getting better at centering myself in myself.
If you have the cash, please look into Better Help. (I know, it's weird to do therapy online, when being online is the problem.) The world is better with you in it. Thanks for still being here.
I think it's okay to enjoy things on the internet, and it's okay to want a little more balance in your life. As for how to get that balance--are there community centers or libraries near you? Often times they have classes and programs that offer a good opportunity to get offline and many of them are focused on interests--like, if you watch a bunch of video game streams, there might be a gaming group you can join, or if you love watching videos about sewing or cosplay, then maybe looking for a sewing class or a cosplay group could be a good option for you! What has really helped me focus on balance in my internet usage is recognizing that sometimes it's not about telling myself Not to do the Internet, it's about finding something More Engaging to do instead. So rather than "I shouldn't spend so much time online" I've shifted to "I want to spend my time on ... [ice skating, crafting, etc.]" However you navigate going forward, I know you'll do okay. I'm rooting for you!
@@untappedinkwell You have no idea how much kind words from a stranger online can mean. Thank you for your recommendations, your support, and your confidence in me. You really made my day. P

The refocusing of the camera on the stranger on the hill who stops to stare, seemingly, straight back at the audience right as Hank says "deepen your relationship and understanding of the world and of the people who you share it with" couldn't have been planned better.
It was cool to see your place, so much cool art is the best thing. Your kitchen looks like a showroom kitchen (probably the flowers). It was hard to listen to what you were saying while looking at all the things, though I could hear the pleasantly unusual (for you) cadence. It's a multi-layered piece I must confront several times through. 😊
Is there any way for artists/creators of nerdfightaria to submit their work to be featured in the newsletter? I know going through it all would be a big job, but it could allow us to have access to human curated art and "content" from our online community.
This would be awesome! We have so many talented, creative, skilled nerdfighters doing incredible work and I would love to see it highlighted. Dunno how feasible it is, but I agree: it would be so cool!

I press the dislike button in the first 5 seconda of every video and I wait for it to EARN an undislike, and only life changing vids get a like
Occasionally, I see something and get sucked in by the negativity, then realize I’m seeing more and more videos like that and I don’t want THAT, then deliberately start ignoring them, and they go away! Mostly! They’ll test me occasionally, “Hey, you clicked on this misery ten times that one week three months ago, still sure you don’t want another?”. 😃
It also knows what devices you're using to recommend specific content. I have traveling type TH-cam videos recommended on my tv, drama, criminal, music videos recommended on my computer, and random stuff recommended on my phone, but all used under the same account!
@@yeralmuzika Wow, I didn't know this! I have two laptops that I use, and I haven't noticed any differences in what I get recommended on them. My mum also uses my TH-cam account on her tablet, and although I don't see the recommendations she gets, she talks about getting recommended stuff that is based on what I watch, and I occasionally get stuff based on what she watches. This has made me curious now to check the recommendations on her tablet and see if they're any different to what I get on my laptops.
Respect to Hank for openly admitting that the internet needs to change, truly a madlad.
we all been sayin that
We need to get people off of it. They're the real problem.😼
3:40 well, we're here because we're here because we're here because we're here.

We're here because we're here because we're here because we're here
:')
Yes, as he said it, I kept saying it, we're here because we're here, because we're here.
I need more of this format. John’s feel like a meditation; Hank’s feel like my own ADHD thoughts come to life.
Yes yes yes! This! Less algorithm, more what I picked. (Tumblr used to be so good about this RIP)
I'm not sure if john and hank are aware but these videos are also attached to a lot of clickbait too i've removed everything else from my history but i'm still getting videos about lost memory functions, lacking motivation, or about other facts that aren't that interesting.
today I'm grateful to see Hank looking healthy and happy outside doing the format
standing up into the lampshade thing absolutely killed me 🤣🤣
This was beautifully shot and staged. The whimsy we ❤ you for
Wow Hank went all the way to San Francisco just to film a video. That's dedicaton!
Thank you! I was thinking is that the Cliff House and Ocean Beach?
@@MichelleK.B. Yep, I recognized the "Giant camera" sign on the building near the end of the video.
i was like those trees look real san franciscoey :)
Honestly, an appropriate city to decry the internet from.
There are very few people i would trust to curate my experience on the Internet, but i trust you two and the people you trust.
Everyone talking about this format thing and I'm just appreciating the immensely good editing and visual jokes without knowing if it's a prior thing
It is indeed a thing they have done before. It has been dubbed "The Format" they only break it out every so often but It's always fun when they do. It's usually John and his 30ft microphone cord doing the format.
@@mayaenglish5424thank you for clueing me in. very enjoyable, indeed.
on their channel page they have a playlist of all the other “format” videos they’ve made so far. i’d check it out :)
@@anna._olsen_oooo I didn't know about the playlist, thank you!🎉
if you like this, just wait until you find out about this guy's brother
Can't stress enough how much I love the format. Please never stop. Also it was very pleasant to receive a random "We're Here" newsletter the other day and even more pleasant to hear the intent behind it
This version of the format is a lil unhinged and seems like it would have taken a good amount of time to film and it's BEAUTIFUL AND THANK YOU
My first thought when watching videos like this where the location keeps changing but the person narrating makes the transition seem so seamless always makes me appreciate just how much work has to go into making a simple 4 minute video. Being able to maintain your train of thought while moving and setting up your camera several times in multiple different places is just...yeah. it's so impressively not necessary and yet awesome at the same time.
I love the we're here. Feels like a nice nod to John's videos that I watch every new years and sing along. Let's be here because we're here.
Thank you for reminding me to go to Ocean Beach, been too long. Signed up for the newsletter, hope you enjoyed/are enjoying your stay here in SF!
Love the format and love the honest, clear-eyed view of your agency, your lack of agency, and the systems surrounding your agency.
These The Format angles are getting increasingly surreal. I can't wait to find out how their endgame will look.
why should the game of The Format have an end?
“And then… I’LL PUSH IT.” Never felt so personally attacked in my life.
i dont think hank ever played animal crossing but the "oh a sand dollar" was so perfect.
Congratulations Hank. I've been on the fence about subscribing to the newsletter for years now and this finally convinced me to do it.
THE GRAND RETURN OF THE FORMAT!!! DELIGHTED!!
When I start to feel overwhelmed by the impending sense of dread that nothing matters and there's no point to anything, I get out my journal and I write: we're here because we're here because we're here because we're here.
Dopamine is addictive especially for people working with a deficit-with ADHD for example.
Looking forward to the newsletter. 😊
Exactly what I was thinking when he was talking. I have purposely weened myself off FB and Twitter and never started TikTok. Being at the whim of the algorithms was not good for this ADHD-I gal.
@@AndreaCrisp
There’s a reason my husband calls TikTok, ADHD TV.
I actually went cold turkey on TikTok because I got super depressed but it’s lured me back in recently. 😞
for a channel called "vlogbrothers" the videos don't often feel like vlogs. but this had ALL the right vlog vibes. nice job Hank. nice job.
2:08 I just made a sound of pure joy that I've never made before and I'm all alone in my room putting off getting ready for work and when you put your whole head in the thing it gave me so so so many happy feelings ❤
i KNOW this place! i spent a couple nights under that bridge! there is a really cool museum in that building back there and I hope you went to it...
I believe the link you want is this one: nerdfighteria.com/
Hey I recognize that beach! You're in San Francisco!
Pretty epic journey for one vlogbrothers video
We're here, because we're here, because we're here, because we're here.
"It's a tough galaxy out there, but somebody's gotta live in it - it might as well be you." 😊
Hank has gone from that fun TH-cam science guy to one of my all around favorite TH-camrs. I look forward to his videos
Holy crap, what a beautiful house!! 😍
Also thank you so much for taking a picture with me in Denver ☺️
Id like to publicly thank you and John for being people who are both wildly successful, affluent people and also who spend a large portion of their time trying to make the world better.
I am feeling particularly saddened by those who are in position to do significant good, but choose not to.
you two are beautiful examples of people who try, and that is so extremely encouraging to me on a daily basis.
I love the shots that start without you in them. It's a curious 1 second game of "Where's Hank gonna appear?!"
I can only imagine Katherine's response: "UGGGGHHH HANK, you started another thing! Stop starting things!"
Kind of wish that the second question (Have you ever...) was multi-select and not single select because HOW COULD I CHOSE JUST ONE!?

Signed up! Recommendation for future newsletter content: the pros and cons of bookshelf organization by color vs. subject/author/title. I'd genuinely like to hear from someone who doesn't get a mild anxiety attack looking those shelves.
Thank you Hank for making my day and not so subtly pointing out that the decorating in your Airbnb was “a lot” (as many things in SF are). Welcome to the west coast (my beloved home).
so glad you stuck your head in the big spherical light (sculpture?). it’s exactly what my brain wanted. scratched a nice itch. thanks hank!
I know it's not the point, not even remotely, but that hoodie makes me feel happy. It makes me feel like Hank is surrounded by cotton candy or something :)
I'm really excited for We're Here! Tom Scott has also been doing something similar for a year or two now with his newsletter, and going through Tom's newsletter it is both 1)the best interaction I have with the internet in a week and 2)FINITE!
Hank, question 2 on the sign-up survey won't let us multi select if we've given money in multiple ways...
It also won't let you select an option for none of the above.
Hey Hank, I agree and love your message, but I used to live right near Cliffhouse(right next to the woods I think you filmed in) and it brought back so many wonderful memories. I know it's random , but just wanted to share.
Respectfully. 2:04 is excellent videography, but oh man did that sound alil painful. Thank you for the video and your thoughts. Cant wait to be newslettered. Reminds me of Tom Scotts newsletter. ❤
That's awesome, love the filming style here. And the apartment. Oh my! The apartment. So many interesting things to look at and explore.
I appreciate that the survey after signing up says if you’ve heard about the newsletter from Twitter, not X
Was not expecting the format in my hometown…
The optional survey after you sign up only lets you choose one from the "have you ever" list and it really should let you choose more than one
whoa whoa whoa why is the cabinet above the fridge padlocked? (0:43)
The optional survey after sign up could use check boxes instead of single choice for question 2!
I just came back to say this same thing!

I'm loving Hank's new hair! It's classy and makes me want chemo but not actually because ouch!
"[Capturing] this wistful consignment to being part of this flawed but beautiful thing that is humanity"
Way to use words, Hank 💚
(It's like this guy is a NYT-bestselling author whose brother is also a NYT-bestselling author and they've both been thinking and writing professionally for over 15 years now... or something)
this is my first vlog brothers video but I fucking love the vibe of his house. the colors, the textures, the color coding and organization, the giant locks on the cabinets, and just the over all eclectic vibes. love it!
Not Hank contradicting the easy way of expressing displeasure and somehow making it make more sense. I love nuance.
Hank becoming a standing lamp got me. Also Who did the logo art? I like it. It reminds me of one of my favorite artists right now Marq Sputsa's art.
Man, I love Tom Scott's newsletter, and have been longingly wishing for a return to web1 style internet
This is gonna be great
My thoughts exactly.
Be the change you want to see in the world.
Hank, you are genuinely one of my absolute favorite humans on the planet. You and your brother, both. Instant smiles and laughter right off the bat.
Just... thank you.
The format!!
This is my first time being here under a minute of a vlogbrothers video release 🤩
Congratulations, Parth!
@@sexyscientist thanks sexy scientist 😎❤️
[ice skating, crafting, etc.]"
However you navigate going forward, I know you'll do okay. I'm rooting for you!
@@untappedinkwell You have no idea how much kind words from a stranger online can mean. Thank you for your recommendations, your support, and your confidence in me. You really made my day. P
@@soccrstar4 I'm so glad! Kindness is one of the greatest gifts we can give to each other. I hope the rest of your day is equally lovely!

Suggestion for the newsletter or maybe just with the awesome socks! I would love to more information on the artists and/or their designs on the awesome socks each month.
I like the random unintentional focusing on that stranger at 4:18.
I choose to believe that was HANK: Master of Forced Perspective.
The refocusing of the camera on the stranger on the hill who stops to stare, seemingly, straight back at the audience right as Hank says "deepen your relationship and understanding of the world and of the people who you share it with" couldn't have been planned better.
What is the internet, if not random unintentional focusing on strangers?
I scrolled back through the comments just to see if I could find someone else who loved that moment as much as I did.
Love this idea
This would be awesome! We have so many talented, creative, skilled nerdfighters doing incredible work and I would love to see it highlighted. Dunno how feasible it is, but I agree: it would be so cool!
