- Saints Row 4, the first Saints Row game, that isn't a Saints Row game. I mean, I thought the last one was bad enough, but this just takes the cake.
I didn't want to make this, but you, you annoyance, you forced my hand. To think I actually went back and played this just for you. You know not how grateful you should be.
Aliens.. give me a break. Hey, if you want to see some REAL aliens, look at our governments. There's no way those guys are human. Too evil. Checkmate, athiests.

The only good thing about the story is Zinyak. He was a good villain. His voice chats with you over the game always were enjoyable and his little text dialogue thing going over his background was neat too. Who ever voice acted him did a great job

He's also the only antagonist in the entire series to actually challenge the boss. Idk if anyone will ever beat Mr.Sunshine for me as my favourite but as a pure Villain Zinyak was probably the best . Everyone else was a pushover until Zinyak .My only gripe is that his final boss fight was to quick and should have add had one final phase once he is out of his Robot suit. He clearly has teleporting powers that he suddenly forgot how to use lol

Spot on for all counts. It should've been its own IP - the superhero elements were pretty fun but calling it a Saints Row game wasn't the right call. Saints Row 2 walked a perfect tightrope between goofiness and seriousness. The fell off the goofy cliff with 3 and 4.
It's also worth pointing out how the game attempts to be a Mass Effect parody, particularly 2. To the point where your homies have "loyalty missions". I wonder if that was another THQ mandate. I'd assume the ME franchise hadn't shot itself in the foot yet when development on this game began.
Loyalty missions was best part of SR IV homies mission and sadly the conversation in free roam are just talking with other homies.. not even Homies trying to talk with you.. Some lazy work down there When volition only care about Homies Conversation.

I think the Saints Row series could have ended with the 3rd one, but not the one we got. It could've continued right after or a year after the 2nd one and the corporate warfare dlc. It could begin by you tracking Dex down to a new city and having him create a new organization that would take over that city. How they could explain you having to start the game without any of the millions that the Saints would have, they could have it where once you get to the city Dex would have his organization hack your bank account(similar to the actual 3rd one we got.). Throughout the story, Dex could try to undermind the saints in many ways. There would also be three new gangs to the game that would fit the universe(obviously). The story would end with the Saints finally taking out Dex and concluding the story of Saints Row. If they wanted to make another game after that it would be about an offshoot group of the Saints that the boss would send to a new city to expand their gang even more.

"Odd juxtaposition" in a grounded world is what made SR2 funny. Shallow, stupid, and superficial is what people think makes SR3 and SR4 funny. When they were "copying GTA" thats when they had something to go off of for what they could deconstruct or take shots at GTA with. When they were just going with whatever they wanted under different management we got Aliens, being the "kinda-grinch tim allen santa claus", and a game designed just around doing a Disney music number with blackbeard and shakespeare and just stupidity for stupid random "parody" sake.
Volition could've really taken over if they just did what they're fans want, especially after Rockstar's laziness and lack of games

Even though it's not a saints row game, I still love SR4 and think it's better than SR3. The things it wants to do, it does incredibly well and is like playing one of the greatest superhero games of all time. I even like how they took steelport and turned it into a playground that's fun to traverse and explore, something they failed to do with it in SR3. Just seems like there was more heart put into this one over 3 despite its rocky development. Surprised you didn't mention just how amazing this games soundtrack is. Not the radio stations, but the games ost. Also, Zinyak was a great villain. He's very memorable and charismatic, something else SR3 lacked.

I felt the Shaundy, Johnny Gat and Benjamin's section were done well in the game.. Which told me this is Saints Row.. Apart from that nothing stood out as Saints Row.. Also, Zinyak himself added a lot to the game like in a loyalty mission with Peirce you drive around and you both sing along the radio like in 2 and 3 but here after a track Zinyak interferes and ruins the fun.. There are lot of moments like this.. Apart from that Superpower thing got so old quickly.. And Everything else was reference and parody of something like Matrix, Mass Effect, Streets of Rage etc etc.. Ironically a game that wanted to separate itself from "GTA" style is now know for being a parody of everything instead of what it is..
Its as though people cared for characters in this series and they were pushed aside for a quick buck.

Probably an unpopular opinion, I really really like SR4 for what it is, it jumped the shark but with a nitrofilled tank and 80's glamrock while shooting fireworks. I respect their dedication of going fully offrails. But at least we can all agree its better than the reboot.
We haven't played the reboot as its not out yet so can't tell.. Saints Row Reboot can be a better game than SR4 but that's all it can be.. Only time will tell..
Also, SR4 is a decent game on its own but it's a bad Saints Row game.. That's why people hate it more than it should

To this day I far prefer SR4 to SRTT. Both were insults to their roots, but at least SR4 has fun with itself. It has better gameplay, better humour and is somehow more respectful to legacy characters. SR3 just feels like an inferior clone desperately wanting to be something else but can't quite let go of it's past.

I actually enjoyed Saints Row 4 a lot more then 3, not because 4 was a good SR game but if not soley because it was a simulation where all the wackiness didn't seem out of place, you got outrageous weapons like the dubstep gun and felt like a superhero where punching and running/jumping were more efficient then shooting and driving respectively.
I know it's not what a Saints Row game should be but unlike 3 where it half-assed everything where it tried to be a wacky comedy but at the same time drive deep emotional connections, SR4 is soo commited to it's vision and focus on one single thing of rescuing the crew and bringing down the alien overlord through dry comedy that it becomes endearing while also fun to play with abilities and weapons that matches the tone of the game.

Saints Row 4 was my first experience with the series. At first, I enjoyed it, but when I got Saints Row 2 and Saints Row: The Third on my birthday, Saints Row 2 became my favorite game in the series, and I still play it today. However, I did not play the third as much. (I would argue that Saints Row 4 is, in fact, a better version of Saints Row: The Third.) I then quit the game and returned to Saints Row 2. After that, I forgot about those games. While I fully agree with your views that Volition wants to stay away from GTA and hasn't changed its direction since announcing Saints Row Reboot, superpowers were fun in the game, and everything is just a copy and paste of the previous game. The game would be fun if it weren't called Saints Row, maybe as a spinoff or a new IP.

Honestly I'm afraid this review does this no justice and I don't mean that to shine a positive light on saints row 4.
There are a few nice things from the actual game of Saints row 4. You can change the skins of the guns (this is unfortunately not as great as you would think as alot of the skins you can change to would have just been better if separate weapons giving the game a very large arsenal and an actual good use for money. Fortunately there are some rather nice looking dlc skins like the flintlock skins).
There are multiple new clothing designs to pick from which are nice. (This is offset by the fact some of the ones from sr3 aren't in this). There are some very cool new cars. (This is offset by the fact that you hardly use them and that they look like half made asset flips. It does help that the 50's cars are always amazing).
There are even some good game references in this like metal gear. (Unfortunately they are out there in blazing humor so it really kills the fun).
Over all the game is severely lacking in every department even what I believe it does well. They make jokes about no one wanting to play in the 50's but they are actually making a joke of themselves as while on my angry echo chamberesc rampage of looking for reviews that agree with my close minded but simplistically real opinion that borders truth in every way almost every review says they wanted more time in the 50's I can hardly blame them it was back when people held both responsibility and respectability with a hint of social culture clash. You had china town the white picket fence suberbs the mafia towns and even though black and white people didn't like each other very much they both understood not to to sleep around and dress nice while visiting shopping malls while hearing that beautiful sims 1 classical Americana shopping music. The colleges and schools had a more formal and patriotic outlook with mascots representing school spirit instead of a couple half shaved pink haired feminist furry fever dreams.
Then there is the down and dirty the gangs and mafia people liked them because they had class and culture. You would fear them.
However there is a serious technology shift that happens during that time sure collecting nudy posters in mafia 3 is fun and all but not much to do besides that so I think people want a bit of a mix to it probably why fallout is so popular.
Anyway the point I'm trying to make here is people had high expectations and low outcome especially now that the reboot has shown it's true colors when people were asking for new things they want in new games they mean stuff like skate boarding or the ability to look at the Internet like in gta (gosh that is fun). They wanted to go back in time like the secret saints row 4 ending they wanted that experience of a clash between the old gen and new gen that brings a nice world of old school style and spirit with a fun play on technological advancement. They wanted the old gangs and new gangs that make sense and play off the stereotypes.

Saints Row always reminds me of the identity crisis both Crash and Spyro had in the mid 2000s, except they made a great return in recent years. Unfortunately the same cannot be said for the Saints Row reboot by the looks of it. We can't always get the good endings.
Two things:
1. The signage all over Stillwater in this game are a reference to John Carpenter's "They Live," and are only coincidentally related to the dystopian nightmare we currently live in.
2. Spinach is fuckin' awesome, especially on pizza with mushrooms and anchovies.
Other that that I mostly agree.

Funnily enough I just finished the Saints Row The Third video when this dropped. For someone who started with The Third even I thought IV was to much of a departure from the series' identity. I'm sure many feel the same. Turns out Saints row IV is the best crackdown game to date. It become clear that it's up to fans to take matters into our own hands and make our own Saints Row successor...with furries and less lust.

This game undid the horrible decision to kill off Gat from the third game, and for that alone it deserves respect.
In addition, there was nowhere to go after 2, and 3 proved that. You can't keep up the rise to power against various gangs formula going - because 2 perfected it.
4, despite being a repurposed dlc- is a love letter to the characters of the franchise. It embraces the absurdity and I love it for that.

100% agree with you on the rap thing. It went to absolute sh!t after about 2010. All abrasive trap beats and lyrics that sound like "Hibada hoobada floobada". Can't stand it. I was listening to Who Got Da Props? by Black Moon from the True Crime: New York City soundtrack while eating my cereal this morning and it really made me realise just how far rap has fallen since then. One sign of hope though is that trip hop is making a bit of a comeback now that people are getting bored of vapourwave and rubbing one out over all things 80's in general.

No you didn’t. You went from street thug with good intentions, to a power hungry thug, to a celebrity thug, to presidential thug. And you never “have” superpowers in the real world. Only with a body armor do you get to use powers for the final section.

While I understand why this game is disliked, I can't help but love it. Something about the idea of going from a random street thug to God Emperor for Life of an alien empire just gets me every time, and I love the characters despite how shallow they are, especially Playa, who is the most delightful psychopath in this game, although I still like her more in Saints Row 2. If you want to play this game in its best state, I'd suggest using the cheats that disable super movement and powers whenever possible, because I have to admit that the superpowers make the game pretty boring. The gunplay and driving, on the other hand, are perfect, and you can generally get around alright without super jump once you unlock flying vehicles, which happens pretty much immediately if you have the Re-Elected edition. When you do have to use powers, avoid the explosive blast at all costs, because that's basically an instant win button; just use the freeze blast to disable warden shields.

Since i ended SRTT by killing Killbane and sacrificing that brainless sociopath woman called Shaundi (which i refuse to think it's the same Shaundi from SR2, a smart, funny and a sort of the Saint's voice of reason), this chapter is the non canonical sequel of a non canonical third game of the Saints Row series.
I honestly believe this game got the character writing way superior to sr3. In sr god knows I didn’t give a flying shot about Kenzie, fake pierce or this new not shaundi but honestly sr4 feels like old shaundi and pierce are back and makes Kenzie an actual entertaining character

Y'all remember that Spongebob episode where he gets super fame hungry and starts singing about striped sweaters instead of cooking patties? That's basically Volition with Saints Row. The "that's what we came here for!" moment is still yet to happen though.
I found the original score during free roam really soothing. I mostly listened to that than the station. Some of the songs from K-Rhyme were good, like "Swimming Pools" from Kendrick Lamar.
When discussing this game, I don't argue with anybody who speaks negatively about it. In fact, I acknowledge a lot of its problems. But it would be wrong if I said that I didn't like it. I can still have fun with this game.
I always felt like saints row just became crackdown cut into different chunks: saints row 1 and 2 has similar story stuff, with taking down gangs and the like, while saints row 3 and 4 has similar gameplay, with superpowers and collectibles to upgrade said superpowers
Ok the last thing i expected from a saints row video was a quoting from the holy Quran. A surprise to be sure, but a welcome one.
This is actually my second favorite game on the series, after SR2. SR4 might have changed the formula, but it was fun on its own, and the story and character development/interactions were great. Following The Third, this had better presentation and pacing overall.
