  • Whiffling geese filmed for the first time with a high-speed camera.
Nice article explaining this behavior can be found here: clives.shawwebspace.ca/photos/...
I think geese do this just for fun, this was filmed in a nature reserve where there's no hunting at all, the weather was nice with very little wind and you can see that the geese first gain some height before turned upside down so I don't think it is a way to descend more rapidly.
2012's challenge will be to get a whiffling goose in a full frame video; that's gonna be difficult!
The complete video can be found here: • Whiffling Geese 1 (Beware: duration is a boring 3:47 min instead of 6.9sec).
Another whiffling geese video: • Whiffling Geese 2
Camera used: VisionResearch Phantom V710. Use courtesy of the "Flightartists"project. (www.flightartists.com or www.vliegkunstenaars.nl).

Holy Wow!! That's quite something. And did I see it correctly? - looks like they turn upside down too. Amazing!!

parrots do this all the time too -- parrot people have taken the term "jinking" to describe it. they have determined it is surely a *fun* thing for the bird.
    thanks for posting!

According to Bird Note; the geese do this in order to slow down for landing rapidly.

Slowing down and loosing descending to prepare for a landing.

My dad saw whiffling barnacle geese! Long before I was born.
Does anyone know the species? Thanks.

Omzetten van de ruwe video beelden naar .avi met PCC (Phantom Camera Control) software (van de fabrikant van de camera). Verdere videobewerking met Adobe Premiere CS4.

Could it also be a fitness display by showing off how strong and acrobatic a flier they are?

Yeah, maybe possible. You can think of every explanation you want, nobody knows (yet). I've seen this behaviour only during the approach to landing, maybe cooling down muscle stretch ;-).

I've read they do it to rapidly lose height when landing. When inverted the air passes through their feathers thus losing all lift. They twist their necks while doing this so their head remains the right way up.

Saw one do this last night, twice in the space of 50 feet. It was alone and did nothing to land afterwards so display or losing altitude are both out.

If you're going to do something for "display", it makes sense to practice alone.

I wish I could but judging by how clumsy I am I’d probably end up in a bad way!
