    Honestly, using the game to spec out the truck was a brilliant move.
    And one thing you might want to think about, if you haven't already, is that ATS can be played in VR. If you take this approach, it would even allow you to get a really good feel for the cab and even location of things like mirrors and instruments, and you can do it with customers before a weld has been made.

    I know y'all might have already thought of this, but just in case- On the diesel fuel side of things, a circulation/ filtration pump might be a good idea to prevent algae growth in applications that don't run the gen set very often, and are fueled with ultra low sulfur diesel.
    I bring this up because when we were doing vehicle transport with a Dodge 3500, we had a 100 gallon tank in the bed, and it seemed like algae was always an issue. I rigged up a pump and filter setup that would just take it out of the tank, run it through a filter, and put it back, and running that daily seemed to take care of the problem.
    Adding a heating element to it probably also wouldn't be a bad idea to prevent gelling (and to make the gen set a bit easier to start)

    • @robinbennett5994

      Good idea! In the marine world, they call that 'fuel polishing'.

    • @scottp45
      @scottp45 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +13

      In Canada most of the diesel has an additive from about October to April to make this not a problem - in Alberta where the video is shot the additive mix is such that it should be ok till -50. So heating element on the diesel shouldn't be required.

      A big YES on fuel polishing 😊 Though the same thing when I read his comments
      When I watch big vessels for sale video I always look for or listen to the tour guy talk about what the vessels have besides just the fuel filters. The amounts of gallons that they keep on vessels are going to have growth issues with fuel contamination.
      Plus by running the fuel through that resuscitation, it shows you the build-up of a growth problem. 😊

    • @glenmcgillivray4707
      @glenmcgillivray4707 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I was half pondering if you could take some of the manual labour out of the process by putting the fuel cleaning filter on a separate Solar powered pump to look after itself, don't need to run it fast if it's constantly going. But that wouldn't play well with the anti gelling requirement would it?

    I've been involved with Edison Motors since Topsy was being built. As someone who's worked with startups since 1995, what most people are missing is just how different their approach is from literally every company I've ever known. Chace, Eric and the team aren't in some pristine office, scoping something out on paper, in CAD or with VR. These are guys who know trucks first. They reimagined what electrifying heavy-duty vocational trucks could be, then set about just getting it done. Likewise, the engineering team aren't in some comfy, clean office. Their in the shop, they're in/around/under the truck, and they're out in the field, getting their hands dirty and their boots muddy.
    From the driver environment and workload, to the economics for the owner, literally every aspect of an extended range electric truck is vastly superior to that of its traditional counterparts. Beyond that, extended range electric heavy-duty vocational trucks can do so much more than any traditional counterpart could ever even imagine doing.
    With less than $2 million and from a tent shop with a dirt floor, these guys laser levelled a set a frame rails, then designed, fabricated and built everything on Topsy that's wasn't already a finished component or subassembly (C9, generator, batteries, e-axles, inverters, converters, etc., etc.). And they did all that in under 2 years.
    Having turned the wheels under her own power just 7 days before the debut at Fully Charged Live Canada in September 2023, Topsy underwent further integration work and testing. This past September, the Edison team returned to Vancouver for Everything Electric Canada 2024. Now, less than 3 months later, they've been field testing under real world conditions that no other manufacturer would ever dare. In the process they've secured orders from partners who believe in Edison Motors' vision and are fully invested in their success.
    This is how a company disrupts an entire industry while changing the world.

      @ysesq 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      its nice....but also not how to scale up so you can crunch out 50,000 trucks per year. you needs robotics, assembly lines and $500 million in cash. muddy boots doesn't get you that.

    • @peter_meyer
      @peter_meyer 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@ysesq Depends. If you specialize in a specific area, you can earn good money. Iveco, Volvo or Scania wont do snow plows. They will just offer the base. If that base needs improvement, you can earn even more.

    • @ARepublicIfYouCanKeepIt
      @ARepublicIfYouCanKeepIt 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +11

      @@ysesq There are zero plans to "crunch out 50,000 trucks per year". Therefore, no need for assembly lines, automation or robotics. Thus, zero need for $500 million.
      In case you're not aware, heavy-duty vocational trucks are bay built. That's because everything from the frame rails up is bespoke to the customer/use case. You don't build a winch truck, a low bed, a snow plow, a drill moving rig, or any other variant one can imagine on a friggin' assembly line.
      So, throw all the shade you want, I've been doing this since 1995. I've seen a lot in that time and I've worked personally alongside Chace, Eric and the team. Edison Motors is on the right track. They will succeed.

I’m sure Royal is going to love a heavy haul truck that can double as an onsite generator and power station. Think of the days when the truck is not hauling it can still be working. Absolutely impressive! I love how you said you want the faults to happen to solve issues in the future. But my favorite part was you saying what caused it and why did it happen. You go to dealerships now it's clear the fault and send you on your way. Finally someone with a background in trucking building a truck. Not someone who took engineering and over thinking builds. You are setting a new standard. Planned obsolescence should be forbidden to incorporate in builds. These other companies say they have the customer in mind yet build things to fail to make their wallet fatter. The fact everything is repairable and easy to reach and get at with repairs in mind. I'm located in Ontario and come from a family trucking business with over 20 years with my AZ license (class 1). Never have i seen someone who actually has the truck owner in mind and not your wallet first. When you got denied the grant being the only one who applied is bullshit. I laughed how you didn't hold back exposing the corruption in our government. Keep it up. Looking forward to seeing these running down our highways. A truck built by a true truck driver, owner, businessman in top spot. You are a trend setter and probably ruin more company meetings at the top builders headquarters daily. Kenworth, Peterbilt, Mack and Freightliner are watching you probably more than anyone else. Probably start seeing drones overhead steady soon. LOL

      But LTT and Edison are the BC, Canada channels I watch so it would be interesting. Maybe Linus can give out some screwdrivers 😊

    15:30 As a European I would HIGHLY recommend you switch from brake light indicators to dedicated indicator lights, as they're much safer.
    "The Senseless Ambiguity of North American Turn Signals" by Technology Connections here on TH-cam is a great video on the matter.
    LEDs don't use that much power, and there's bound to be standardised, off-the-shelf components you can use to add dedicated rear turn signals to future production models.

    For small commercial, heavy consumer market… get a conversion kit for passenger/cargo vans like my 2016 Mercedes Sprinter with almost 600,000kms… when this thing blows I’d love to convert it;)
    You’d have every Hutterite colony and delivery fleet knocking down your doors!

    Going to need variable speed winch on the bed truck since an electrically driven hydraulic pump won’t be happy without a VFD. Simple manually adjustable valve on hydro to the winch. Will be weird hi speed winching without revving the motor!

    I want to get back to heavy equipment. I had run my dad's 30 hp Kubota. The farm I worked for let me run much bigger stuff and I learned really fast. The 924f loading hay with no brakes was probably the machine that taught me what I needed to know. I got to run a nearly new 950K and G I think. This was a decade ago and my memory isn't great these days. Those 950's were so sweet though. The float on those machines was sweet. I could cover ground and keep the loader planted without bucking the machine and causing unnecessary wear and tear. Joystick was also a huge improvement, but with enough hours the old hydro sticks were fine. The hydo finger setup was my preference. But I only got 40 hours on that machine as it was a rental. I really liked it and it gave me a bridge to the joystick. I haul propane transports now but would like to expand into welding or heavy equipment. We'll se who offers me a job first. Being home every night would be nice.

    Love this project, love these guys. What a beauty day a, indeed. Takes me back to the days of snagging somewhat staticy SCTV with some coathanger from over Lake Erie. Seriously, I wish they would adopt the generator style hybrid in cars instead of having all the extra drivetrain of current hybrid cars and SUVs. Need a system that will use the 4.3 in my Astro, plenty of room for batteries inside or out.
