Most times it's just that one tape has a damaged hook. Either the hook is bent from a drop or it's not sliding like it should from being dragged through mud/stucco etc. If it's exactly 1/16 then it's probably that one of the hooks isn't sliding as that's the thickness of the hook that the slide is supposed to take up. For those who don't know the hook on your tape measure is supposed to slide back and forth 1/16 to account for the thickness of the hook material when taking measurements either pulling or pushing (outside vs inside measurement).
All tape measures should be designed according to the same requirements of accuracy, which should eliminate such things. Besides that people have a different taste. I use a compact 8m tape, while all the other guys use a 5m tape. I've had plenty of different tapes, and find mine to the be the best I've tried so far, and would not like to use a different one.
My first day on the job 35 years ago the Boss asked to see my tape measure. I gave it to him and he threw it into the dumpster and handed me a new one just like his and said everyone needs to be on the same page so all the measurements are the same. I never forgot that lesson.
