Ay. Dios.
The first opera I ever saw at the Met was opening night of this production. About 45 minutes before the start, when few people had yet arrived, I was standing alone at the top of the grand staircase when a couple came up the stairs and the woman turned and smiled at me. It was Jackie Onassis with Henry Kissinger! In the first intermission I was introduced to the great bass Italo Tajo, who told us that the second act set was the most beautiful set he had ever seen. I cried like a baby at the end of Act 3. What a night!
+John Mitchell A memory to last a life time. Such a beautiful opera to start with. Today This opera is being shown right now as I write at various Cinemas around Australian cities. I cant travel so I am having a day here at this site to enjoy it from my arm chair. But to have had your experience - wow. An emotional ride throughout.
+John Mitchell There was even more excitement that night. Jackie O was followed up the staircase by a procession of famous singers coming to hear the gala opening - Sherrill Milnes, Donald MacIntyre and Richard Stillwell. There was an awful moment in Act 2 when some idiot in the balcony yelled 'Boo' in the silence after Scotto's high C in L'ora o Tirsi. That was reported in all the papers. Some claimed she gave the balcony the finger but I don't remember seeing that. And to cap it all off - when we staggered down to the subway station under the theatre, there was Kitty Carlisle waiting alone for a train. Again - what a night!
Some really ignorant people out there. Just watched another Manon Lescaut and there was a few boos there. And in my opinion, there should not have been. If I dont like what I am hearing at the opera I just dont clap the performer. Lucky you for that wonderful night.
I forgot to fasten my emotional seat belt before viewing this today -- big mistake... this is such a spectacular example of two fully mature singing actors -- what happens here is beyond description. :-)
In my opinion...there are two famous duos that created fireworks when they sang together. One: Domingo and Scotto Two: Pavarotti and Sutherland. DAMN No one sings like this anymore!!!
@@judyjones2475 There is a magnificent version of this duet sung by Montserrat Caballe and her husband Barnabe Marti, one of the most underrated tenors ever.
Scotto my first soprano love 1975 she blew up her small delicate voice to get more roles i dont blame her artists have to go for the gusto sometimes . shortened her career . saw her in Butterfly in Central Park OMG fabulous did not end her career on the best note but ill always love her
Thank you very much for this video. Placido and Renata are the best! Placido is so beautiful in this part of the opera and i like when he says "Nel l'occhio tuo profondo io leggo il mio destin, tutti i tesor del mondo ha il tuo labbro divin" because he says this in a very romantic way. Placido is the best tenor and Renata has a large extension vocal... In a word...they're the BEST! and superb interpretation.
Scotto began as a leggero...then becoming older her voice grew in volume and dramaticism...fantastica...after Callas one of the greatest soprano ever...
Just before curtain on opening night an announcement was made that Domingo had a cold and begged our indulgence, I didn't hear any problems. I'd already heard him here in Vancouver in Tosca and Massenet's Manon. It was great to see Menotti take a bow at the end - he directed. After Jackie Onassis passed me on the grand staircase I also saw Sherrill Milnes, Richard Stillwell and Donald MacIntyre come up the stairs.
This was a Saturday matinee. As a youngster, I took an early train from Philadelphia to NY and went to the Met for the standing room line. When tickets went on sale, I was second to last to get a ticket. The woman in front of me knew all the ins and outs of the Met. She looped me to the green room post performance. I met Scotto, Domingo, and Levine. I remember Domingo looking incredibly tired. My guide said to Scotto, "You die so beautifully." She smiled, and I followed it with, "Let's hope it happens no time soon." If looks could kill, I would not be writing this. It was a strange and eventful day that will remain in my memory like a picture on a wall. By the way, the "bravo" at the end was me. Strange but true.
No disrespect, but if you were a youngster when you saw this production live at the Met, not sure I believe it was you shouting "bravo" right after the duet concluded. The shout seems to come from an older person. Maybe you think that was you? BTW, I did see this live from the Met on PBS. Will never forget that memorable performance. They have that whole production here on youtube.
Domingo and Scotto are timeless!!! I watched this performance on the TV, and it seems like yesterday. By the way, Domingo is wonderful as a person, so simple, no star allures!!!
@BeatricePontini, perfecto tu comentario, They take no prisioner¡Renata&Domingo estan maravillosos los dos, siempre¡,....por cierto Beatrice es un nombre precioso, tambien es un nombre 'who use to take no prisioner too'¡....Beatrice¡....hummmmm¡
I adore Puccini’s music.

It's exciting to see such celebrities but for me it would have been enough to see Placido.
Great acting from Scotto and Domingo.

Sehr schön! Das ist wirklich ein Masterwerk von Puccini!
Превосходно!
I saw Tebaldi and a tenor whose name I thankfully forgot in the mid-60s. I adore this duet.
Still remembering the direct from the Met! Tears of emotion then
And now! Marvelous singing and acting

This is when Scotto has a voice; deliecious.
Wow. Pretty racy. I prefer Callas, but she's doing a solid job. Her high notes are spot on. Great chemistry. Placido is so fine.
