- This is a juvenile sperm whale named Scar who is sometimes sighted off the coast of Dominica. He is about 11 years old and has been interested in people since he was a calf. This was the third time I had been in the water with him, and he seems very enthusiastic to see me! This was shot with a Canon 7D in an Aquatica housing with a Tokina 10-17 lens.

Their sonar is so powerful that divers can only dive for a short time with them. With the sonar they are able to scan you but its so loud and such a frequncy that to be "Scanned" can feel like your on fire. Your bones vibrate and your organs jiggle, some have passed out from it.
Remember hearing about a driver who reached out to touch a sperm whale's snout just as it sent out a sonic burst. His hand was paralyzed for 4 hours afterwards.

So basically a living, breathing submarines with a jaw charges toward you while bombarding you with the most advanced active sonar in the animal kingdom. Then it comes to a full stop and asks for belly rub. I'm not sure if I should be scared or laugh.

pretty much. considering their clicks are 200+ decibels, im pretty sure it was producing an image clearer than an ultrasound we'd use for pregnancies in order to figure out if this 'thing' it was approaching was food or friend. its fucking crazy how smart they are..........
Ash Green when they turn their stomach to you, they are reading the sonars they are sending. Apparently their stomach side is their most sensitive side to the sonar reception. It's basically studying your insides.

These animals don't swim very well, and they obvious can't talk. They might not be so smart but they seem harmless, even friendly, let's check them out.

Ye if they are trying to communicate with other sperm whales on the other side of the world those waves can kill you. They actually heat up your insides... thats how strong they can be which is terrefying and fascinating.

Wow I didn't know that. Makes perfect sense since the clicks are used as eco location to find their prey, mostly giant squid that live in the deep abyss.
It's so weird that mammals seem to have this instinct that they know humans will rub their belly if they present it to you. I mean, you don't see other animals rubbing their bellies. It's even weirder that when an animal presents its belly, you can't help yourself but to rub it.

Think too, basically any animal's belly is a vulnerable location too, so presentation of the belly is a sign of trust, and touching the belly is high respect.

The scar on the upper jaw of the sperm whale highly resembles a scar from a cookie cutter shark attack. tentacle scars are usually rings, instead of divots.

What an amazing being. He knew to stay still and quiet so he wouldn’t hurt the people swimming around. We are not the only sentinent beings on the planet. Just because we can’t properly communicate with them doesn’t diminish their value.
I think whales are telepathic myself. It's just that we're not, and that's why we can't communicate with them. I mean logically, they have incredibly large brains, many times bigger than ours and they don't have the apparatus to speak (necks like ours to house the right voice for speech, an epiglottis and sinuses in the face). So what else do they do with big brains hard wired for higher emotion and communication? Or have I been watching too much Star Trek? Wahahaha.

We have a few in Berlin in the Zoo and while you observe them they do the same.
One Silverback actively avoided eye contact some other visitors tried to make, he could have taken it as a provocation but he decided to act different.
He likes you! Sperm whales tend to stay upright when they want to welcome you and interact, and he kept his clicking to a minimum. He probably knew that those would hurt you. That's so cool to watch!

Two things I've noticed.
One, he has some small tentacles sticking out of his mouth, most likely from a squid
Two, he has a hole near his mouth which was definitely caused by a cookie cutter shark.
Hole is more likely from a colossal squid's hooks
@@awhynash Double checked. 100% a cookie cutter shark. They're tiny compared to the colossal squid, and to even most other sharks, but they can leave significantly sized marks on animals. They latch onto a larger marine animal like a leech, and twist themselves back and fourth to tear out a piece of flesh, hence the name "cookie cutter" shark. Colossal squids, while they do have formidable hooks on their tentacles, wouldn't be able to cause this type of damage. The hole on the wale is wider and more shallow. If it was from a tentacle hook, it would be deeper and less wide. Not to mention there'd be more of them close to each other. This whale only has a single hole on it.

Certainly animals aren't perfect. But there are differences in the way various animals develop.
There are many different ways various animal's brains work.
Some animals have imprint memory. Some have associative memory. And so on.
Sperm whales have been well documented to have a very long term memory when it comes to certain basics. Food location, water temp and salinity locations. Friend and foe identity.
Sperm whales have been documented to identify friendly research scientists successfully after extended absences, even up to 30 years.
A sperm whale sees you visually, as well as inside and out, in 3D with their sense of echo location clicks. They can even see the fetus of a pregnant woman.
So, when you dive around a sperm whale and make friends with it. It will remember you, as an individual, for the rest of its life.
I'm fairly certain somebody wrote a book about it.
So, for my critics, think. Take a moment to think about it. Then realize that you are an idiot.

It's just fascinating seeing marine predatory mammals that could easily consider us a quick meal being simply inquisitive and wanting to interact. Shows how successful they are as species, they get their food when they want it and the rest is just playing and exploring. Similar to us.
EDIT - Since so many people are focusing on the "whales do not eat people", I am not implying that they would eat us. I am making a point that a big wild predatory animal is happy to be around us, while this is not a common occurrence in nature. Other intelligent animals, such as elephants, would not be very happy if we went near them.

Of course that's what those scars are from, sperm whales "Love" to eat giant squid. Giant squid tentacles are armed with serrated suction cups that they use to fight the whale off. Sometimes it works, most times it doesn't.

This is why I love whales. They are the biggest things on the planet, but they are also some of the most gentlest. This whale deserves way more petting.
That's surprisingly a VERY friendly, gentle, and affectionate Sperm Whale. It knew exactly where you were and took great care not to accidentally hurt you. It seemed pretty happy and content just to be near you and spend some time with you, checking you out. I kept thinking, "awe, you big ol' baby" while watching this. I'd personally love to dream that whales would actively seek out human friends for hugs and belly scratches.
Well most whales are pretty friendly towards humans and they are very cautious around us as to not hit us

Sperm Whales are many things, but gentile is not one of them. They are one of the few creatures capable of sinking Human Warships of any era and are more than willing to do it. Though it is sad that we hunt them

Not really, sperm whales sleep vertically with their mouth near the surface with one eye open, like a dolphin.
I think you’re only partially correct. They do that in order to identify you. Their clicks almost act like an ultrasound. It’s pure curiosity on their part and I think that’s how they view humans as non-threatening. That is unless they’re attacked, then they’ll likely do something.
Whales are beautiful creatures. I hope one day we put an end to whale hunting.

A lot of sperm whales get battle scars trying eat giant or colossal squids. Their suction cups have hooks in them that can slice up the whales pretty well. It's mostly superficial damage though

btw...there is one confirmed case of a harpooned bull having just surfaced from a 90+ minute dive with two freshly eaten bottom-dwelling sharks in its stomach.
This was in an area where the bottom was no less than *TWO* miles down for a fifty mile radius!
Yeah, they're even more remarkable than you think.
Also, when seeing humans, not knowing if they mean harm or not! That's gotta be the most terrifying thing!

Because they have oxygen from the surface, they're actually far more powerful than anything surviving on the little that's down there, even the squid. They just leave marks while losing. It's almost like a Navy seal hunting children.

This is more amazing than many may pick up at first glance. Sperm whales are not migrating baleen whales and rarely move along coastal waters acclimatizing to people.. Additionally, many mature ones (as this is) may very well have memory of encounters with whalers decades ago both legal and legal.

Honestly, Sperm Whales are probably one of the sea life that I fear the most. With how close this whale was, all it had to do was make a noise, and it can kill you.

these creatures can easily fucking tear you to shreds if they wanted to. Yet the fact that they decide to remain calm and allow you to goof around with them is remarkable. Truly some spectacular animals

Some sperm whales who have more contact with humans actually notice that their clicking has a very strong and even harmful affect on us and tone it down when in contact with us.
The ones that ARENT used to being around humans are not only a threat to eardrums, but the energy from their sonar output can actually ramp up your body temperature a bit. Loudest animal indeed!
As beautiful of an experience this is, I personally do not know if I'd have the guts to get in there with the whale. Bravo to the brave souls that did!
I'd feel safer in the water when there's a whale around then I would with no whale around. I know they won't hurt you if you respect them and they wouldn't let anything happen to you.

Whales are like the elephants of the sea -- gentle giants that are lumbering yet graceful, powerful yet sensitive, and incredibly smart. The fact that we've hunted both to near extinction makes me wonder about our own intelligence. Here's hoping we've smartened up enough in the last 60 years to save both species.

This reminds me of the heart of the sea movie where the sperm whale stares at the hunters with its massive eye and chose to let them live. Here, the whale seems to be curious and quite friendly towards the divers which shows how calm and intelligent they are.

Sperm whales are amazing - they have the largest brains of any animal on the planet. They also have fascinating and complex brains - they have spindle neurones like humans and great apes that allow for complex cognitive functioning, and higher cerebral functioning including empathy, self awareness! The eery thing is that they have a lot more than we humans do -

Sperm Whales are Omnivores who live mainly on Giant Squid & Octopus. They also eat crabs, shrimp & fish including small bottom dwelling sharks which are not the type of sharks People think. They're the sharks that People buy to keep their fish tanks clean. So this animal isn't a Carnivore as They eat only molluscs, crustaceans & fish. They don't eat Mammals including Humans.

Reckon the scars would be from orca attacks? But yes, whales do have big brains and while they don't have the intellectual capacity we do they are incredibly EMOTIONALLY intelligent. Sperm whales seem to be like humpbacks... empathetic, altruistic (see vid of sperms adopting deformed dolphin). Sometimes I even wonder if they're telepathic. Perhaps they were onto something in Star Trek. Wahahaha.
I just saw another yt vid about sperm whales that said their frontal cortex is six times the size of ours. Maybe they are six times as smart as us, idk.
I think they are personally. Sure they don't build things and philosophise and do science and stuff. But do you see sperm whaleys killing their unborn babies inside their wombs? No. That's just the tip of the iceberg. It's their emotional intelligence that is far superior to ours I think. They have the monopoly on qualities such as empathy, compassion, altruism and yes, love, not us. Them and humpbacks and probably other species of whaley do really. They could teach us a lot.
