    very helpful video. I am profesional pianist and singer but I recieved kawala as a gift about a week ago in Egypt. And I fell in love with it. after one hour I´ve pulled out of her my first tone and after 1 week I already know 3 scales, so thank You - You helped me a lot. but I have to say it's very hard to learn to play on it for me. thus compared to the piano....anyway her sound is beautiful so it's definitely worth it.

    I got a very cheap kawala and 15 minutes sounds like a wounded mouse in heat.
    The scale doesn't sound like the scale you are playing so am going to order a
    better kawala now that I know I my fingers can actually cover the holes.

    I have a question.
    Where should I aim my air when I play and what angle should the Kawala be at?
    I'm kind of confused about it and I haven't seen anything explaining it.

    Hello; First, I am so happy to find your videos and the things that you share is very generous ! And I thank you very much for this.
    I play an west African flutes (The Tambin from Guinea Conakry ) until years and i fall in love with the Kawala. I produce sounds whith my Kawala but I ear that there like a double sound on the first register that I can't reach. The sound of my first register is too clear... and i know that i miss something to have the "crying sound" of the Kawala. Have you some tips or exercises to obtain this kind of double sound please ?

    • @Arabic_strings18
      @Arabic_strings18 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ah thank you kind sir! So if I ordered the Rast do kawala from the website, would do(c) be my tonic for all scales? Ajam, nahawend, Saba, rast, hijaz, etc?

    • @Arabic_strings18
      @Arabic_strings18 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Niri Sadeh thank you Niri, see for instruments like Violin and qanun, I can play with just about any singer in the world, for kawala then, I would need 7 different kawalas (12 really) to match any singers tonic, is this correct? What I mean is- one kawala would only work if all singers sung in the same tonic? My primary goal is to also play kawala at haflat, but would need to match several different singers tonic. If so, does Arab instruments sell bundles?

      @@alial3802 Thank you so much for the very detailed instructions! I have 2 more questions though; i don't use pvc pipe, i have a piece of bamboo on my hand right now, 42cm long (just cut it). Thing is, it tapers, so it has a diameter of 22.5mm on one end and 21.5mm on the other. I know from the ney that the mouth end corresponds to the bigger diameter (the part of the cane closer to the root)..is it the same with kawala? Also, for the third and fourth holes, i did not understand very well. I divide 3.5cm to 4 and i get 8.8mm or close to 9mm...but how do you get from that result to the fact that the distance between holes 2 and 3 (and between 4 and 5) is 2.9cm (i feel like there's a calculation missing from the explanation..or maybe I'm just thick and couldn't understand). Thanks again!

    • @thegraceofwriting9092
      @thegraceofwriting9092 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@alial3802 Thank you so much once more for answering my questions! I know indeed the way i need to taper the mouth side. But i still have a mathematical problem on my mind. A quarter from half the third is approximately 9mm...3.5cm minus 9mm is 2.6cm..is this what you meant? (because you wrote 2.9 again and i can't figure out where you got that result from). I'm apologize for insisting so much, but i want to make it right from the first time, i don't have much bamboo. Thank you!

    • @thegraceofwriting9092
      @thegraceofwriting9092 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@alial3802 i have a bit of experience with crafting various types of flutes from cane and bamboo...I'm not very fond of plastic. i already made another kawala out of bamboo, but i tuned it using a different method (placed the holes based on percentages i found in a book about flute making). I made the holes smaller at first, then i enlarged them to fine tune them; the instrument is tuned, but holes have different dimensions. What i actually wanted to know is what are the intervals between the notes on the kawala (as i asked in my initial post). But then i found on a website that they are tuned according to the Rast maqam (Do, Re, Mi half flat, Fa, Sol, La, Si half flat, Do). Now, the second kawala i want to make by your specifications, seems more straightforward than using percentages..this is why i insisted to understand the final step in your instructions (placing the 3rd and 4th holes). Thanks again!

I find the one played by lord krishna more difficult to play. The one similar to ney is easier. But the problem is in India rarely anyone teaches how to play Ney. But many to teach how to play bansuri.
