My daughter was born on 6-2-14 I named her Naya , inspired by this Arabic instrument (also means tender/pure) . It is very ancient instrument. The nay is literally as old as the pyramids. Nay players are seen in wall paintings in the Egyptian pyramids .The Nay has been played continuously for 4,500-5,000 years. It is one of the oldest musical instruments still in use.

What's interesting is that the earliest discovered written melody (dated for c. 1600BC) is in diatonic heptatonic scale so literally the most common thing used today xD

Tragedia Ostinata Por si alguien pregunta por la definición de la recurrencia dramática... Una tragedia, sobre otra, sobre otra, sobre otra... Bassam Saba fue uno de los héroes musicales con los que crecí escuchando y estudiando música. Cuando supe que tomó el cargo de director del conservatorio nacional del Libano, me emocioné mucho pensando "que bien están haciendo las cosas!! Quien mejor que él, músico bilingue (masterizó los maqamat orientales y la música de arte occidental) y multi-instrumentista, para liderar el conservatorio". Aparentemente fue un martirio para él. Espero y deseo mejores cosas para el Libano y para la música. Da para pensar respecto a muchos aspectos como por ejemplo: la gestión cultural, los desafíos de la nueva era digital postpandemia, el rol del músico en la sociedad, el valor y el lugar que se le da en el contexto público y privado, las políticas públicas que asfixian el desarrollo de esta importante y fundamental disciplina... la muerte de Bassam Saba no puede ser en vano y creo que el problema que vivió en el Libano, es una realidad que se vive en muchos países en el mundo entero. Proponer que el conservatorio quede a su nombre, creo que es un bonito gesto. Entender un soplo de lo que quizo tratar de implementar, sería un desafío para muchos. Como transmitir a las próximas generaciones el amor que Bassam tenía por la música? Esa pasión que podrías escuchar en cada nota de su nay o de su flauta traversa... en cada taksim o en cada compás interpretado por este gran virtuoso y maestro. Yo voy a partir por ahí, a ver si logro entender un poco lo que lo movía a arar su legado. Lo que me deja Bassam Saba, no es la tragedia que vivimos todos, sino lo que siempre siento al escucharlo una y otra vez: Esperanza sobre esperanza, sobre esperanza, sobre esperanza...
