    Super super exciting video to film! I actually take you on a 27hr shift through labor & delivery, but also explain what to possibly expect on your rotation. I also include some things that I like to do to stay prepared.
    Some thing that I didn't mention for being proactive and doing well on your rotation is to go see the triage patients before being asked/before the residents do! It's incredibly helpful. :D

    The state of Long Term Care really came to light when the pandemic hit, so I decided to become a Personal Support Worker, or CNA as you guys in the States call it. I used to be a legal assistant for criminal lawyers, so this career change was very welcome, and needed. Now I wish I had done it 20 years ago! I love being a PSW!

    Hi Rachel, really nice video as usual. I was just wondering what your thoughts are on the complicated pregnancies such as those complicated by (pre-) eclampsia or early ruptured membranes. During my rotations those pregnancies left a big impression on me when I was scheduled at labor and delivery.

    • @RachelSouthard
      @RachelSouthard  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hmmm I don’t have particular thoughts about them. it’s unfortunate seeing mamas come in with these conditions, but seeing the work up is fascinating.

    • @ArtiAnushka
      @ArtiAnushka 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      What left the biggest impression that sometimes these complications did not end well. While Ob&Gyn was mostly a happy rotation, it sometimes was heart breaking. I had never thought about it like this before this rotation.

    Definitely love the way you told your experience! I haven’t been in OBGYN (until next semester) and I’m rotating trough Internal medicine working with communities until mid September that I’m going to be and the hospital but since I started med school definitely cardology or endocrinology gives me so much passion and I don’t know when I was in basic that subjects always hunt me! But need to experience the other ones so I can be really sure,

      @mke_gal 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      wow great question, now i'm curious too! :):) i hope she sees this. personally (i'm not in medicine yet), i think that in clinic an ob/gyn could have the freedom to have an "adjustment table" (idk what it's actually called) in the room and provide the patient with that care while they're there for something else

    • @RachelSouthard
      @RachelSouthard  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes! There are :) I’ve seen one doc counterstrain. And do some sacral balancing. Then also using BLT-type technique on the uterus itself taking strain off the ligaments. It was really interesting.

    Hey Rachel! Thank you so much for sharing your passion with us! I loved learning so much about OBGYN through your audition rotation. I was curious, knowing what you know now, what experiences would you recommend for pre-med students to keep on being involved? I know some students become EMTs, CNAs, MAs, or phlebotomist. I’m particularly interested in womens health and I’m working towards becoming an OBGYN one day as well :) ❤

    • @RachelSouthard
      @RachelSouthard  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I would say just to volunteer in the ED and shadow some docs! Standard things to get exposure in the field. If you’re able to do like EMT or scribing, that of course would be helpful

      Just breathe with mom and be present with her. Also, make it about her. It’s her moment, her strength, her day. Take the focus off of you, and have it be on the patient :)
