    Personally, I like the sunset motif, but I think the gold-leaf is a tiny bit much. Still, it shows just how much a fresh coat of paint can make an old, sun-yellowed, war-weathered machine look good again. Also glad to see an alternative to Retro-brighting, because some of us can't leave old computer parts outside in the sun for any length of time.
    Looks are always going to be a subjective topic, and while it's not what I would have done, I respect the fact that you let someone else have free reign to do what they wanted. It's certainly more exciting than just being beige or flat-black.

      I love the idea of giving old tired business objects a soul. I find it has a similar energy to taking a bland server and playing games on it, like LGR did on that industrial IBM PC. Or converting a shipping container into a beautiful home. Or taking a cheap car nobody cares about and making it into something special (I did that to my old Geo - you don't have to believe me, but that thing made me happy every time I looked at it, almost precisely because it challenges people to reexamine what is deserving of love). I love a clean perfectly restored all-original computer (or car, or...) and have a few myself but I really don't understand the disdain people have for a restomod. Perhaps, some people wish to somehow reconstruct the past. That's fair, but not everyone's the same.

But we've all seen that, and he already mentioned he has a few of these. How many exist that look like this? To take something you had already written off, and turn it into a unique pice of art... I call that a win.
    And it's great to see this creativity from a non-technical, artistic person, unbound by the technical constraints of how somehing "should" look - even if it's not to everyone's taste. That's exactly why it looks so different to anything most diehard geeks would consider "normal". 🙂

    please, these computers with each passing year dwindle in numbers. Restoring them to original condition is by far the best possible thing anyone could do to them. Any paint will reduce value and give someone in the future that much more work. I'd suggest making custom cases or using new aftermarket cases to make art with.... nothing to lose.

    • @guffaw1711
      @guffaw1711 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I disagree. I think it's far more important to safe vintage computers from getting destroyed in landfills or being recycled in the first place, than it is to preserve or restore each and every one of them that does get safed to the most original state possible. You can't imagine how many C64s, C128s and so on to this day end up going to the trash. They still show up at house cleanups and auctions and people toss them because they think they're old junk. They have no clue.
      On the other hand each of these computers tell their own story, they may have rarely or never even used, bought as a novelty toy but found to be of no use to the person who owend them and stayed hidden away for 35 years. Or they may have had a rough life. Or cared for by their owners while still being used extensively, modded, deliberately or undeliberately broken, or scribbled on, whatever. I don't think it would be fair to remove all traces of their past use off of them. I think we should add to them. This is all part of the heritage, these weren't collectors items, they were toys and tools and somebody's possession.
      In this sense this particular C128 had its life not frozen in state or decades from its appearance shaved off of it. Instead something was added to it's story. This C128 became a gift from one person who loves retro computers and who has a wife with a passion for painting to another person who loves retrocomputers. A gift from them to Adrian. That's a pretty hefty gain in value if you ask me. That C128 got character before the paint job and it definitely has character now.

      @@guffaw1711 You don't disagree because I don't believe destroying them in landfills is more important than saving them :)
      They sure tell their own stories, I have dozens of them - all unique.. .and I agree you can preserve their history... but that doesn't mean painting over them.
      Very few things are manufactured to be collector's items. Things become collector's items.
      If you paint over the yellow c128, how does it add to it's history... how would you enjoy the past markings and details?
      There is value in history but there is a fine line between that and just defacing & devaluing a vintage computer to add character.
      More interesting history imo is how was the motherboard repaired over the years, where was it manufactured and which processes they used, how does it function and getting them repaired to new condition.
      Sure we can skip the retrobright and save it's character - give it a good windex'ing and pack it away.
      but personally, I like to see "trash" turned into "mint". it's so satisfying. I love seeing 40-50 year old computers looking like they just came from the store. (inside and out). I've seen my share of stinky computers but I think that novelty kinda wears out after you went though 100 of them - MOST of them are stinky... but few are mint. It's far more of an undertaking to restore vintage computers than to cover them in paint. But I don't really mind... as long as they are not damaged in the process... paint can be removed. So in closing, I agree with you, it's far better to paint them than to have them in landfills. But it's better to have them in new condition than painted :) imo.

    • @kaitlyn__L
      @kaitlyn__L 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ChronicKPOP I mean that’s fair, it sounds like you just have more of an engineer’s mindset about it is all. Especially with preferring to learn the history of the repairs over intuiting things from its outer appearance.
      However in this case I would have to say I don’t think it detracts from or hides the history. The case was totally standard aside from the colour, which you can still kinda see through slots and vents anyway. There wasn’t any, say, carved-in text in the case which the paint might have obscured or anything like that. And now it’s gained a new and far more unique appearance. Millions of these were made and Adrian even has a bunch of other ones himself. I wouldn’t want every last one of them to be painted like this but I don’t see any harm in doing here and there, especially given this specific case of being soooo yellow.
      But that’s just me.
