Hey there Bob! Ken here from Nova Scotia. I didn’t know how a mother moose weens her calf. It’s basically the same as how a farmer weens the calves off their mothers, cold turkey. Another excellent video.
Another solution you could try for your roof if it still leaks , as I have found roofing cement to either dry crack or melt in the heat (depending on what you actually use), is to go with Flex Seal. It hasn't failed me yet. That stuff is like Frank's Red Hot Sauce you can put that on everything. It also comes in other colors, like grey, that may reflect some of the heat from the sun unlike black.

Yes indeed sad that the mama moose disowns her youngster to defend for it' self. in like you said the cruel animal world esspecially the bear and Coyote's , wolves winter and finding food sad. I absolutley love your cabin and the area it sit's also nice that you have the water on the premises via natural stream. lovley improvment on the stove looks real nice Bob. I would most definitly start a small fire in that wood cook stove to cure that paint or you will be sorry when its freezing outside and you have to have all the doors and windows open for several hours while it cures and cooks off.
