The last time Wonder Woman got attached to anything close to talking about 9/11 it was Amazon’s Attack. And Wondy got sidelined in that trash fire too. (Edit: you mention Amazon’s Attack later in the video)
And guess what we going to get Amazon's attack part two because I've been upcoming panels that's been drawn so you know it's going to tie in to this event
@@ChrisSuperDude Amazon’s Attack was actually written by Will Pfeifer and pencilled by Pete Woods. Although if I remember correctly yes that did happen. Amazons also went slaughtering civilians indiscriminately (including kids) and not one of them questioned that Hippolyta was being blatantly uncharacteristically evil and the ones that did suspect something, like Wonder Woman, just stood around and did nothing (Hippolyta was Granny Goodness the whole time).
So, how are the various groups, “rounding up” said Amazons? Where are the Justice League and the other capes and cowls? This could be an interesting Image Comics short run/single graphic novel, but Tom King is most definitely not Alan Moore. Sadly this was quite lazy writing and research, and yet again another horrible story to further sink the “Wonder Woman” titles. On a happier note the Warren Ellis titles on Image Comics are very much still quite available.
The Lasso...of...Lies?!!!! The Lasso of Lies?!!! Whyyyyyyyyyyyy? I knew this was going to be bad...I knew it. And I asked the same question as you Wes "Why are Amazons living in America?" Oy!
Yeah, what good intelligent use could a villian have with a lasso of lies???? You wrap it around someone and it would make them lie??? Wonder Woman has the Lasso of Truth so she can deep interrogate someone like a criminal without the need of being scary or threatening like Batman.
The good things about this comic (aside from the artwork) are Sarge Steel doing something, Diana not surrendering to the military and doing her throwing the tiara thing from pre-Crisis as well as talking to Steve Trevor and resuming her identity as Diana Prince, and the appearance of the Sovereign.
So Sarge Steel is now Sargent Steel, as in that’s his name (like Sargent Shriver)? Because if it’s still his rank (Sarge short for Sgt), it would be spelled Sergeant. Tom King would know that.
Because the previous writer was a woman and her run and event storyline was awful, which torpedoed sales. King Is a name that DC knows sells no matter what he’s writing, so from a business standpoint, I can’t blame them.
One day Wonder Woman will get the new good story she deserves. At least I hope she does. As soon as I knew Tom was going to be writing it, I knew today was not that day.
@@theultimateartist4153 If it wasn't for the ground work laid by Perez there wouldn't be anything for him to work with. He brought WW into the modern age.
17:39 The Cloonrad run of Wonder Woman was initially interesting because of Diana meeting Norse gods until she decided to return to Earth to live her life, deal with forgotten Golden and Silver Age adventures (i.e. Milk Company for Golden Age and Image Maker for Silver Age), Trial of the Amazons and Revenge of the Gods being a thing, and ending with Diana in a sleep coma in the 800th issue and her waking up to continue to be active as a superhero. Also, her meeting Yara Flor twice and barely interacting with her family.
The Amazons were depicted as isolationists. Weird having them live in the USA. What’s the reason? No answers. It’s a very jarring start but I’ll give it a five issue shot.
To be fair, I doubt that he sees this villain as a Trump substitute because cleverly, quietly working behind the scenes is the exact opposite of what Trump does… he probably sees this villain as the force behind someone like Trump however.
@@sarov7658 It would be no one that we know of (if they even existed), which is kind of the point with a behind the scenes, master manipulator. Idk I thought his Green Arrow. Run after Kevin Smiths was pretty good, his Justice League of America run was fun. Identity crisis is not as bad as it gets hate for. By the time its over, this might take John Byrne's tiara for the worst writen WW run of the modern era.
Wes, I agree with your critique of this comic book, and Tom King's writing, in general. However, all of the complaints you levy against King's writing - his ignoring of canon, continuity, and characterization in lieu of telling whatever story he wants - could be applied to Hickman too.
These complaints could be applied to a number of writers TBH, but if they write a great story like House/Powers, most people won't care. Plus X-Men comics had just experienced the "lost decade," meaning that revitalization was necessary.
If I remember correctly after the Amazons Attack storyline, Hippolyta's Amazons were told by Athena (Granny Goodness in disguise) that their punishment for attacking the United States was to go live in Man's World without any memories of Themyscira. Some Amazons probably left the island, married men and had children. Granny/ Athena probably used the Mother Box on them suppressing their memories. I wonder how many Amazons returned to the island when their memories came back. It is not reasonable to say they all did. I bet some probably stayed in the U.S. with their families. ]
I've really only read the Perez run all the way through but when he was in charge it didn't seem there were a lot of Amazons in total. 300 seems kind of high. :)
That actually sounds interesting was that a Tom King storyline? I think Amazonian, Antlantean, Thanagarian society/culture and their relation to humans doesnt get fleshed out enough.

Every now and then I start to wonder is I'm being unreasonable with my stance of not reading any new Marvel or DC comics. Then videos like this come out and give me renewed reason not to care about these characters that merely share the same name as the characters I used to read about...
My biggest problem with TK's writing is that he just cannot write a linear story. Jumping around and quick cuts are not elements of quality storytelling, they are overused tropes that try to provide cover on poor storytelling.
1:09 continuity of "Uterus" ? Waiting for the day where Disease Comics has a full trans-gendered justice league. And diana was actually born a male who transitioned into an amazon princess.
The big problem with writers like this who pander to the woke narrative of 'all men bad' is that those messages, drip by tainted drip, erode into the minds of people who can't rationalize that this is fantasy and not reality. The message of men being hateful and inherently bad is so overused that young boys are in crisis believing that they are bad people just because of the gender they were born into. Girls have essentially taken over all franchises with Star Wars being about Ahsoka and Sabine and Rey now and Star Trek being about every force-fed female character that Kurtzman can shoehorn in. Marvel is a girls club. Lord of the Rings is now the Galadriel show. It's hard for young boys to find role models in this landscape and when they do try to join in the current crop of books or movies they are treated like trash or worse. Wonder Woman used to be a great role model for everyone. Every hero and heroine had something special that people wanted to emulate and, by default, make them better people. I'm tired of these angry writers who make everything dark and sour. The world deserves better.
Stories like this don't deserve to look as spectacular as the artists rendered this issue. I'm reminded of Alan Heinberg's run illustrated by Terry and Rachel Dodson--horrible story; amazing artwork.
Is this "Sovereign" guy really a new villain at all? Because he sure looks like the Golden Age Duke of Deception, and a "lasso of lies" fits right in with that. He does say that Sovereign is "merely one of" his titles, but then there's the bit about his hereditary lineage, so I don't know. Tom does love reintroducing old villains. Maybe he plotted it as a Duke of Deception story and had to change it when other writers revived a different version of the character last year.
Hahaha. Why dc comics? Why can't Wonder woman just fight Ares, Medusa or Circe, find the golden fleece or go on a adventure with atlantians or with Greek demigods? Why can superhero books be fun? It's action and adventure not political essay 😱

Wow Wes, saying that if people like Tom King then they don't care about characterization and continuity was extremely condescending and not at all thinking critically. It's kind of like saying that people who think differently to you are wrong, which you usually criticize. There are plenty of people who like Tom King who care about continuity and characterization. I don't get the nitpicking here. It's like you're searching for issues and problems just because you don't like Tom King. The things you bring up aren't even accurate. Wonder Woman was doing things in the background for the whole issue. It was mentioned in the narration, just not shown until the end of the book. Showing the main character at the end of the story is common in first issues, and you don't seem to complain about it when it's other characters. Most of the issue is laying the foundation, which is perfectly fine. Nubia told the Amazons to leave America after a lot of the events in the comic happened. So no-one is disobeying her. There was also shown reasons why some Amazons can't leave so quickly. Amazons being in America. Yes, it was just Wonder Woman many many years ago, but there's no reason why other Amazons wouldn't have moved there over time, especially with WW as ambassador. Wonder Woman fighting Sgt. Steel. He attacked her first and tried to kill her. Why would she not fight back? Sovereign was shown on one page, you can't make so many judgements and assumptions based on that. Yes, he has American and religious symbols on him but so what? Patriotism and Religion aren't necessarily bad, but they can and have been used to control people very effectively. It makes sense. I'm not saying that he wont turn out to be a subpar character, but it's too quick to make that judgement. Watching this as someone who read the comic, this came of as very biased. It was a good first issue and better than any Wonder Woman comics from the last few years. It might go downhill, it might not, but this was nowhere near as bad as you make it out to be. Certainly better than a lot of other DC comics at the moment.
Nobody likes The Joker because of the grand ideas of Good vs Evil and Order vs Anarchy. Nobody does impressions of Heath Ledger's Joker because they care about the battle for Gotham's heart. It's all about his presence and charisma. Every well written version of The Joker steals the spotlight and gives us one hell of a party every time he is on the screen or page. There is a chilling and terrifying, yet exciting and exhilarating sensation when Joker is allowed to be himself. Now tell me, taking a look at this little Sovereign guy, do you really see him doing anything other than spouting the most cliche dark lord lines and getting his ass handed to him by Wonder Woman? Does a bald old man look like the face of unbound charisma and captivating presence to you?
Pretty much everything wrong with current-year comics in one book. It's a master class in modern comic book writing. Would have been better as an Elseworld or something. I know I haven't been a regular reader in awhile but there should never be 300 Amazons living off their island no matter where they're living.
What pissess me off about Abrams is, from what I've heard, he does it to 'own' it. He insists that his version be the only one out there and then changes it all so he has some level of ownership of that version. It seems like both a dick move and the work of a massive narcissist at the same time.

I don't know if it's a good or bad thing that Wonder Woman isn't in the comic. It's good that he can't ruin her and make her wish kids die or something. But I always say WW isn't a hero she's a warrior. Sitting on the side lines is the last thing she does and the reason why I love her. She doesn't worry about stuff like not killing badguys, the laws or rules like most heroes she just does what she thinks is right. So it's still ruining her in a way. And I mean get to really know the history of WW, and learn about William Moulton Marston and try to keep an open mind and ignore the hearsay.
But look they couldn't even get characters right like Wonder Woman's fam., Fire, Ice, Harley Quinn, Poison Ivy, Hawkgirl, Supergirl, Power Girl, Green Lantern (Alan Scott), Young Justice, etc. It would be a long list if I named all the characters that DC screwed up. And this is only DC, Marvel's probably just as bad if not worst. I'm just a casual that follow, (I have been more into eastern entertainment). I can't imagine how painful it is for *real* fans that know and love these characters far better and longer than me having to go through this.
@@RollingDodge Yes,Marvel is worst just look to the X-Men today.
You should make a video discussing why the Joker is such an impactful character. I'd like to see that.
Most boring WW book EvEr, bad anatomy of Diana body, yet another misogynist villain The King of America, "Joker" level villain ... ffs DC so woke that they can't understand how to make interesting villain with INTERESTING story without playing a victim to patriarchy and RRRacismus.
And it felt like Frank The Punisher in body of Wonder Woman, 0% femininity and possible biological male.
Mike Deodato drew the hottest Wonder Woman in the 90's.
@@treymykelI look forward to not reading it. It was a bad idea then, it’s a stupid idea now.
Was that the Greg Rucka book where the Amazons take George Bush hostage?
@@ChrisSuperDude Amazon’s Attack was actually written by Will Pfeifer and pencilled by Pete Woods. Although if I remember correctly yes that did happen. Amazons also went slaughtering civilians indiscriminately (including kids) and not one of them questioned that Hippolyta was being blatantly uncharacteristically evil and the ones that did suspect something, like Wonder Woman, just stood around and did nothing (Hippolyta was Granny Goodness the whole time).
Amazon Attack ruined the amazons reputation as peacemakers. It's sad that shit event is canon again.

Tom King has to be my most hated writer at the big two for their writing and not because of their personality/politics
Tom King one of the few dudes I know with mommy AND daddy issues. Stop using our favorite characters for therapy Tom!
I just wish that DC would stop employing Tom King in all capacities.
Me too. I don't know what he has over the ppl that work there.
So Sarge Steel is now Sargent Steel, as in that’s his name (like Sargent Shriver)? Because if it’s still his rank (Sarge short for Sgt), it would be spelled Sergeant. Tom King would know that.
The worst part was Tom King renaming her homeland They/Themyscira.

I’m honestly surprised that DC hired a guy to write Wonder Woman and not… well a woman.
Tom King hates his own gender more than any woman could.
Ha
King's not a woman, but he's definitely a pussy.
Or at the very least a guy that identifies as a woman 😁
Because the previous writer was a woman and her run and event storyline was awful, which torpedoed sales. King Is a name that DC knows sells no matter what he’s writing, so from a business standpoint, I can’t blame them.
Oh no, it's _Amazons Attack_ again!
Tom King is the Rian Johnson of DC.

Bring Marvel and DC into the public domain and reduce prices!
To be fair, I doubt that he sees this villain as a Trump substitute because cleverly, quietly working behind the scenes is the exact opposite of what Trump does… he probably sees this villain as the force behind someone like Trump however.
I dont know the force unless you mean his supporters
@@sarov7658 It would be no one that we know of (if they even existed), which is kind of the point with a behind the scenes, master manipulator. The point is that, if this character is going to take that role, it would be a poor satire of Trump… because he is anything but “behind the scenes” and he is not even that good as a manipulator.
Note: There are a lot of “ifs” in all of that, because we still don’t know where King is actually going with the story or the character. That said, King can be pretty predictable.
This book is incredibly accurate on the racism/sexism mentality Of American magas ...

Idk I thought his Green Arrow. Run after Kevin Smiths was pretty good, his Justice League of America run was fun.
Identity crisis is not as bad as it gets hate for. It was… extreme to say the least but the scene where Deathstroke systematically takes out the justice league was pretty cool.

Comics and the wider genre is an industry Tom King needs to vacate. Moreover, everything he's done needs to be swept under the rug and forgotten.
So, we all have to suffer because Tom King probably waterboarded some poor Iraqi all while exposing him to Enter Sandman over and over again during the war. It all makes sense now.
Meh, Marvel has been doing this for years. Captain Britain got replaced by a woman. Moon Girl and Riri Williams are smartest characters in the Marvel Universe. Tearing down men is being done by both companies.
Is it meant to be a reflection of his baggage, 911, homophobia, a recycled Jodie Foster movie? Wish DC had picked a different writer, nice art, lovely colouring, great Artgerm variant, a good writer would be nice too, someone that actually has a love and knowledge of Wonder Woman.
Hackman --umm, I mean Hickman is overrated as hell too.
9:44 Looks like Diana and the Amazons are going to have a Judgement Day because of AXE.
I do like the art but thats about it.

That actually sounds interesting was that a Tom King storyline? I think Amazonian, Antlantean, Thanagarian society/culture and their relation to humans doesnt get fleshed out enough.

Reading Tom King so we don't have to. Wonder Woman deserves a better class of writers.
My biggest problem with TK's writing is that he just cannot write a linear story. Jumping around and quick cuts are not elements of quality storytelling, they are overused tropes that try to provide cover on poor storytelling.
Reading one of his comics is like listening to a 7 year old tell a story.
Where does somebody get the information on how which new books are selling? The official sales numbers?

@@user-eg1eh8tm3z 🤣
Is Amazons Atrack 2.0. Thanks Tom King, at least Linkara can't attack because he is on side
This is why DC needs to stop hiring writers who write comic books as therapy sessions. Nobody wants to read stories related to their problems. 😑
Ok to speak the plan truth. I really hate Tom King. I try to avoid anything he writes.

Tom King trashing another legacy character.... just another nail in DC's coffin.
I've been waiting months for this review and Wes you did not disappoint!! Although this is a train wreck I can't look away from lol
Pretty much everything wrong with current-year comics in one book. It's a master class in modern comic book writing. Would have been better as an Elseworld or something.

Tom King really can't help himself can he? The art is great tho, I always loved this artist from the first time I read Injustice
She wasn't on the sidelines. She was doing things throughout the comic but it was only mentioned in the narration. However, she was only shown in person near the end.
You are wrong. In Pre-Crisis Era Diana were very against kill and tried your best to avoid killing the bad guys. She even had issues with the police or the army because your willingness to use lethal force against your enemies. The modern warrior take it's just a misconception of your character and nothing more.
That seems to be a thing in comics. I've been reading a lot lately both old and new issues and realize that the star of the book isn't even in the comics about them half the time. I read a Black Panther comic last night that didn't have Black Panther in it anywhere. AT ALL. Not even an appearance at the end like WW in this issue (which I just read) It seems to be an odd thing. Some of the Detective comics I've read don't have Batman anywhere in them, stuff like that.
