  • DC Comics are in the midst of an epic downturn. Sales are collapsing, readers are giving up. Some are saying this is the worst era in DC Comics history. Others believe DC Comics are dying. In recent memory the New 52 and DC Now stand out as especially bad. There are several factors that make the current era of DC Comics standout as even worse. At this point it's hard to deny that DC Comics are dying. Customers are walking away from their heroes. DC Comics are destroying them weekly and there are very few talented creators at DC Comics. All this explains why this is the worst era un DC Comics history.

They hired writers that can write for books, novels, YA but can't write for comics. They hired people that don't understand the fundamentals of how to write for comics. They hired people who don't understand what heroes or heroism is. They hired people for social points, not based on merit or just plain talent. They hired people to take their characters and turn them into platforms for their social agendas first, over character development and story...Mainstream Comics are dying on the vine and soon to be over without major changes. The companies that own them don't care about comic books, only movies, cartoons and merchandise. The "modern" era of books are just there to hold the IPs so they use the characters in other forms of media. The same people who think all comic movies should be campy, corny, BANG! BOOM! POW! silly comedies, are now in control of the actual comics. They don't care about the medium, they don't want to take comics seriously, they just want to squeeze every last dime out before moving on... And if they can virtue signal by making characters gay or trans or change their race for extra points and back pats on the way out so it looks good on their resumes to the detriment of the characters, who cares! comics are just silly nonsense anyways, who reads any more, they make more money on one superhero movie than all the comics they produce in a year. Corporations have killed comics, they'll never let go of the IPs. Independent Comics are the future, direct to customer crowd funding is the future. Its really gonna be tough for creators in comics and its really going to be telling on what really sells based on what the audience wants and likes.

I then came to DC and found a sad line of 18 ongoing comic series, 12 of which revolved around batman and his buddies. I mean, I love batman! but I was really expecting something else aside from him.

DC can do a company wide crossover starring Superman where he discovers Mr. Mxyzptlk is behind all the woke, the Justice League beats him, and the DCU moves on. Marvel can do likewise by having The Fantastic Four lead the Avengers against the equally guilty Impossible Man. 'Nuff Said! 😉👍

To me its another "Dark Age" for both DC and Marvel. There isn't anybody competent in charge. They have employees bashing customers, something that isn't allowed in any other industry. And to top it off, they keep hiring people with no talent, or even a hint of talent, for this kind of work simply to fill a quota. Until they get a person in charge, who actually has a love for every aspect of comics and its characters, things are only going to get worse.

I have to say something: I agree with a lot of what was said here but I believe there is something else that is key and missing from here: Nowadays, there is just sickening, twisted, absurd and vomiting obsession with sex, "inclusion" and gender agenda. THAT is what has become a priority over actually creating a good story structure, a character arc, a heroic journey the character must face in order to develop and a COHESIVE heading regarding a particular series. I have seen multiple iconic characters that are being either phased out to be replaced by new characters (that do not stick) or, worse, changing the characters completely to fit a new agenda. Examples: This new Jackson character is being tried to replace Arthur Curry as Aquaman (failed), this sort of disco character to replace Green Lantern (failed), Robin is now gay, the original Green Lantern Alan Scott or whatever is gay, Thor being replaced by Jane Foster... Not to mention the beyond horrible I am not Starfire storyline or that first Powerpuff Girls draft in which one of them had a sex marathon or something... You can see what happened in the Arrowverse, it has all completely collapsed!! The only surviving show is Flash and it is on its last leg since the show has become unwatchable since S4... It is time that they understand that all this crap they are doing DOES NOT SELL!!!

DC needs to be completely cleaned out of the talentless writers and completely rebuilt with good quality writers. Until that happens, DC is dead.

I started reading comics in 1979 as a 9 year old. To me, as a Marvel reader in the 80's (except for my love of the JSA) my personal golden age is Marvel's Jim Shooter era until he was ousted from Marvel in 1987. Sure he made some bad mistakes during his reign : The New Universe and that creepy Carol Danver's pregnancy thing in The Avengers, but so many books I cherish to this day are Marvel books from 1979 to 1987. Sure Shooter could be difficult to work for, but there was a lot of quality on those convenience store spinner racks and newsstand shelves. And I finally took DC seriously the first few years after Crisis On Infinite Earths. Wally West as The Flash was far more interesting to me than white bread Barry Allen. And John Byrne's Superman wasn't making me feel like I was 5 years old. But could somebody explain how the classic versions of Hawkman and Hawkwoman could team up with Superman, The Atom, and The J.L.I. and then disappear? All of a sudden Hawkworld shows up and bye bye classic Hawkman. DC started confusing me at that point.

Like seriously use stormwatch make them younger if you like and have them be in future state to save the older justice league or here is a thought create new hero backstories using existing heroes you do not use! Smh I don't mind change when change is not forced and is used correctly not for publicity stunts!

Their graphic novel/trade sales being down isn’t surprising. The new stuff is terrible and nobody wants to read it in trade form. On top of that, the pricing is insane. Just for example, they recently released Deluxe Edition hardcovers for The Long Halloween, Dark Victory, and Catwoman: When in Rome. The cover price on When in Rome, which is half the size of TLH and DV is the same at 50.00. That’s insane. The prices on Marvel trades has always been higher than DC but DC has now caught up. For something Marvel charges 35-40 for, DC used to charge 25-30, sometimes 20. Now they’re just as much if not more.
