How to Use the Pomodoro Technique - Study Tips - Time Management

  • How do we get our work done? We use the POMODORO TECHNIQUE. This is a great method for managing your time. It involves breaking your tasks into 25 minute chunks, then taking a 5 minute break, and then doing another cycle. Repeat until you're done!
    It's amazing how much more efficient you will be when using this time management technique. This is the right way to do multitasking - staying VERY focused on one task at a time.
    The Pomodoro Technique was invented by Francesco Cirillo in the late 1980s. He used a little Tomato-shaped timer, and that's where the name came from! You can get one here:

    This technique is especially powerful when combined with using a PLANNER.

      So true! We're always taken aback how well this technique works for us. It's a little frustrating, actually. Why can't our brain work that way all the time? 😂

      I use pomodoro timer and set a goal to do pomodoro for at least 7 times a day so at least I success in studying 2 hours a day 😄😅😅😂 it sounds less but I never did that longer so it is a big achievement for me 😄

      I'm high on the adhd scale, so this is just a basic study technique for me, but I do 15/10 minute cycles with some give or take based on how my personal energy feels. But for my brain break time needs to be about half the time the study cycle was.

    Also there’s no right or wrong number. For me I’ve been using the 35 minutes for working on a task, and 15 minute break and as long I use it properly it has been working effectively. And I’m pleased with what I can stick to doing which leads me for more time to not be productive, relax, and keep my mind refreshed.

    This technique worked super well for me studying for a difficult exam that I passed this week (woohoo!). I was able to do more study cycles with pomodoro, but the breaks were critical. I would love it if Socratica created a Pomodoro app. The ones I've found are either overcomplicated or vaguely negative/insulting 😝

    Thanks for the super helpful video on such an awesome technique. Its kind of amazing that doing something as simple as planning your breaks/time wasting you can increase your productivity dramatically. Definitely think the tip you gave about preparing everything you need to start your work was really smart. There were many times when I found myself wasting precious study time looking for things/getting water or coffee. Thanks for that!
    I found that the Pomodoro Technique resulted in an almost instant boost in my productivity. It resulted in better grades, getting more done, and ultimately getting accepted into an awesome medical school. 100% Recommend trying it if you're on the fence.
    One thing that wasn't mentioned here is that doing a ton of Pomodoro rounds can be pretty taxing so it is important to take lengthy breaks after about 7-8 rounds. Go workout or something so you can be fresh again to knock out more work.
    I post similar videos to this one on my channel if so feel free to check it out!

      For me, it never has at least in its basic form. It seems counterintuitive somehow. While it isn't necessarily hard to concentrate for 25 minutes, it's far too long to commit to from the get go. And then just when you build up some momentum, you're forced to take a break which is too short even to switch off and then switch on again.
      I say start with a simple 8 minute session to begin. Then take an 8 minute break. Then a 10 minute session followed by a 10 minute break but this time not mandatory. You are simply owed a break at the end of the 10 minutes. If you have found momentum carry on for up to 50 minutes, then take the break. If you made it to 50 minutes reward yourself with a 15 minute break instead of just 10 minutes as originally planned. Beyond that you will have built up the momentum and be fully in the zone and you needn't actually monitor yourself too much. But if you do, you either do short stints(say 20 minutes) followed by a 8 minute break or longer stints(say 50 minutes) followed by a longer 15 minute break. If you are really into the study session at the end of a planned 20 minute session, don't stop just because the timer went off. Go on for another 30 minutes(having reset the timer) earning a longer 15 minute break in the end. Occasionally give yourself an extra 10 minutes even at the end of a 50 minute session to tie up some loose ends and then take your break. The advantage here is that you start slow but you don't stop the momentum when you build it up. Go with the flow. Also breaks include the time needed to switch from work to relaxation and back again so that they are actually effective. And you don't get into a rut with fixed blocks of time either. Most importantly the phenomenon called momentum is respected. You don't stop yourself just because a timer went off.

    I have two questions.
    1. Should I take notes simultaneously while reading? Or could I do that after I completed reading a chapter or a concept?
    2. Could I take some time in the 25 minutes I study to recall what I've studied?

    I can work for 40 minutes straight before I need to take a break. That's usually when the guards show up, and I have to act like I'm sleeping or reading in my cell. By the way, my five-minute breaks consist of episodes of socratica. So, could you make your programs a little shorter? I really enjoy your channel, and I've learned a lot of stuff that will probably be helpful once break out... oops I mean leave the facility. thank you.

    1:15 I’m kinda the opposite of that... it takes me 20-30 minutes to really start focusing on something. In college, I always preferred the summer session classes because they were longer (and my grades suggested I learned more from them, too).

      Interesting! Have you tried creating a workspace where all you do there is study/working? We find that helps us get into the work mindset better.

    Maybe it would be nice for newbies to study for 22 minutes and take 8 minutes brake , for a few weeks until they increase their discipline and strengthen their mind, and then move to 25/5

    Although 25 mins is by far the most common, I have seen other places advise a 45 +15 split for slightly more complicated subjects. What does socratica think about that?

    • @Socratica
      @Socratica  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Interesting idea...sounds like people should test it scientifically! From our experience working with high school and college students, it's a rare person who can stay focused for 45 minutes.

      We're so glad you are watching! Welcome to Socratica!
      We use the Pomodoro technique all the time when we are working! It's really quite amazing how well it works. We typically do 25 minutes of work, then 10 minutes off, 25 minutes on, 10 minutes off, until we finish a task. It works so much better than trying to edit a video for 4 hours straight!

    What do you think about, instead of taking a break, switching to another topic of study. For example, 30 min of math followed by 30 min of comp. sci. followed by 30 min of history etc?

    • @Socratica
      @Socratica  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's an interesting idea....there is a drawback to multitasking that it actually takes a lot of mental effort to switch focus. We're actually writing an episode on multitasking now...lots of competing ideas about it. The consensus is that you definitely can't do two things simultaneously, but switching back and forth works for some people...
      Thanks for watching and commenting! :)
