Yea, somehow it seemed challenging for people with Executive Dysfunction or had any Executive Functions issue. Wonder if Justin has any techniques to overcome/improve.
Random course member with ADHD here and yes, there are quite a few tips/techniques I've found helpful for my ADHD specifically. Didn't think it would be possible but here we are :) I live by my schedule now
Hey Justin, just want to say thanks for being so open and realistic in the intro, saying that you didn't always work 100 hours and took breaks here and there. It just makes you seem so much more genuine and human. I'm not saying people shouldn't work that much, either. I get close myself often, but I do find it hard to believe when people tell me they work 100 hours a week every week, 26 hours a day, no breaks ever. And this isn't uncommon to hear on the internet. I always roll my eyes at those people, because I know they don't work that much even if they truly believe they do. The brain has a way of playing tricks on all of us. It's just refreshing seeing you be so honest about it. Great video by the way.
@@JustinSungclaiming that you studied 120hrs a week is not honest at all. I did the calculation and it’s impossible to study 17 hours a day. Reflect a bit harder and revise your bullshit claims.
I'm actually a member of your course, currently at late briefing. I found that my biggest problem is scheduling and time management, leading me to not doing revisions, like, ever, which obviously is pretty bad. It's insane how useful this video is, thank you very much! I have a lot of Kolbs in front of me now xD
Every time I watch one of your videos I think deeply in how to start applying everything you talk about in it, in my current life as soon as possible 🎉🎉
Having your family support you and just be civil is massive. When I was in college I had to pay my parents rent and pay all my schooling and expenses causing great financial stress. I also had a heroin addicted brother who was verbally and moderately physically abusive and scary. One of my parents was an alcoholic and the rest of my family were toxic but it was partially because they were stressed out from the other two family members. The stress caused me to drop out in year 2.
I hope you can move to a better place, away from them, and get back to your studies. If you ever go the entrepreneur route, consider some remote online job, so even if you move to a smaller but cheaper town, you can make money. Shane Hummus is a good resource on TH-cam.

Wow, this made me tear up a little bit, and I’m not a very emotional person. I have ADHD and I feel like I’ve been on very very a similar journey to you over the last decade. Even down to the whole tutoring/working whilst studying part. I particularly resonated with the points about being too strict with task scheduling and thinking I was a night person because of lower distractions, and later finding out I work better before everyone else is awake than I do after everyone else goes to sleep. And finally the point of chaining tasks that go together or help each other has been such a game changer for me. Thank you for making this. I’m sure plenty people will benefit from this.
Yes, Justin acknowledged he was stupid for not sleeping...and I want to reiterate it for those who glossed over it....getting sleep is very important. Stop sacrificing sleep. Please.
18:03 The sequence you're talking about is similar to the book "Atomic habit" when James Clear talked about habit stacking and it's better to stack habits and create a consistent routine than just do a habit in isolation of your day
Overestimating tasks is actually a good point that I didn't know needed to be explicit. I found I set 1 hour to do tasks that took me 45 mins of 30 mins. I'd procrastinate but that's ok because the next task I would have that extra buffer so I wouldn't worry as much and then collapse my entire schedule.
Working 100-hour weeks for four years is an extraordinary accomplishment that speaks to an almost superhuman level of discipline, focus, and resilience. The individual who has done this has not just defied conventional wisdom about work-life balance, but has redefined what is possible in terms of human productivity and endurance. The willingness to share insights about how to manage such a demanding schedule is both generous and invaluable. This isn't just a lesson in time management; it's a masterclass in the optimization of human potential. Anyone who can maintain such an intense workload and still find time to educate others is not just working hard but is also contributing meaningfully to the broader community.

I tried doing strict scheduling when I was in highschool and it took me way too long to realize that not only does it not help me, it also hinders my performance, because I have no concept of time lol. the main effect it had on me was being constantly stressed because it felt like endless deadlines, I was checking what time it is every 15 minutes. the second prominent effect was that I found myself unable to function without such a stricy schedule, paradoxically. I got so used to doing everything by the clock that I forgot how to ask myself what I want to do. I switched to to-do lists, but that presented another challenge: I had no idea how long a task would take, when I should do it, what has the highest priority, etc. then I came up with a gamechanger, instead of checking my to-do list, I tried doing as much as I could of what I felt like doing at the moment. I would write down what I did that day and then check if I can still use this framework tomorrow or if I should plan something from my to-do list, which would be shorter at that point, making it easier to decide

Seeing your reactions and hearing your opinions while playing FF7 Rebirth would be awesome.
Especially considering that real studying (deep, concentrated work on one topic; picture doing math work or active recall of knowledge / testing oneself) only really happens for bouts of 90min tops and then you have to rest (as in: should do something not cognitively straining) for AT LEAST 2-3hours before you can go again for another 90mins (if you want it to be effective)...and you can do that for 3 bouts of 90min max. Most people can't do more than three per day. Source: Dr. Andrew Huberman, Stanford, Neuroscientist I don't know what "17 hours of studying" is supposed to be, other than tedious work and virtue signaling about how great of a work ethic and lack of a personal life he has. The thought alone makes me want to vomit and cry about burnout.
@@nottomclancy2439 two/three hours of rest sounds like a long shot, Huberman in one of his videos states that 20 to 30 minutes after 90 minutes of intense focus is enough
@@nottomclancy2439 Yeah totally agree, 17 hours of studying is just impossible. Sure you might spend that amount of time at your desk looking at a book, but studying implies learning which is impossible to do actively that amount of time. For me the absolute maximum is like 4 hours of studying a day, after that its definitely diminishing return! Love huberman btw.

The shock in my face when he pulled out that note book of check lists. *Realizes I do the exact same thing* Uh oh. Usually I just make checklists in my little notebook, but I've been trying to make time blocks - however, its just been difficult to decide when I want to do what XD. Making a digital schedule has been on my mind for a while - so I think I'll be implementing that. Also I fully agree with no compromising sleep. In fact, I sacrifice work just to get my 7 hours in XD. To anyone who isn't sleeping - please sleep, thank you :).
When you say you’re privileged, you’ve missed a greater point, it doesn’t matter where you are in comparison to other people, it only matters where you start and where you finish… I worked my ass off in a factory Night Shift for years, saved and studied, my wage is 500% higher now “and I’ll work harder to increase it even more”
But you worked night shifts for years, that doesnt sound good at all Imho journey is more important than destination And imho what you just said sounds like a life wasted for material accumulation lol Anyways whoever is reqding these comments i wouldnt listen to OPs advice Go live your life Have sex during the night, dont work Enjoy your life, dont gaslight yourself into serfdom like OP Btw if you were privileged you wouldnt need to work night shifts for years Its very important where you start, i mean yea, you are now paid like a lord, but you lived a life of a serf and you sold your young years to serfdom Which prolly very little amount of people are jelous of
It seemed to me that you didn't teach this way in iCanStudy when it comes to scheduling. I did the course 1 year ago so i don't know if you have changed it or not. I remember asking questions about the way you taught how to do scheduling, I had a feeling that the way you taught was a bit too strict and it didn't work for me. I got a reply from one of the people in your team and they basically asked me to keep the strict scheduling style.
You Justin! Love your content! I’m curious if you also are a fan of Huberman lab podcast? It has alot of things that apply to all aspects of health wellbeing and learning! Thanks, Evan.
Thank you, Dr Sung. This video has really helped me. However I have a question: When do I draw out the schedule, Should I do it the night before the day or find one day and draw for like 5 days?
haha the threatening and insulting yourself in your own schedule part is so funny 😂but I feel like it's not bad -- it's probably better to write those things down and use them as motivation than to quietly and incessantly internalizing those things in our heads.
I do something of a bullet journal its different than what youtubers nd creators hv exploited them to Its very flexible and it a pocket notepad. I dnt like digital scheduling because I tend to forget about them or feel distracted or overwhelmed by them so i prefer that small lil pocket bullet journal ig If it will work for me i will keep doing it
I understand why there's a lecture on sleep and its necessity here, since it's apparently not something many productivity-oriented students prioritize, it's just kind of amusing to watch this as someone with three sleep disorders who needs 10 hours of sleep a night to be functional. Also, yeah, the percentage of people who can genuinely function on six or seven hours of sleep is significantly below 0.01% of the population -- and that's at the higher end of the estimations of the number people in the world who are functional on 6 to 7 hours, to say nothing of those who are entirely functional on less than that.
You were not studying 120 hrs a week. 24 hrs minus sleeping, walking to and from class, errands, taking showers, using the restroom, preparing food and eating does not equate to 17 hrs.
@@richardsteve6089 well he meant while he wasn’t working. I know what it’s like to study 60+ hours a week, and it’s pure hell. Doubling that is impossible and such a disrespectful lie.

If my next video gets 400k views I will do a play through haha
@@JustinSung I did not forget, Justin. Will keep paying attention once in a while till February 29, 2024, I guess 😅. It is looking complicated though ☹ (I am looking at the video "Most viewed Study Advice is Wrong (Learning Expert reacts)" views. Although, I think when you answered here, your next video was actually "You're not Lazy: How to End Procrastination For Life" if I remember correctly - which is looking better!). I like FF7 and knowing that you also like FF7 makes me happy. I don't have a PS5, so if I have to watch a play through, I might as well watch someone that likes FF7. Seeing your reactions and hearing your opinions while playing FF7 Rebirth would be awesome.
I need a video like this aimed at parents 😭
Ok ilove to hear that you are teaching me.ill study with you for now
120 hours of studying?! that's more than 17 hours a day! I get anxious just thinking about that
Especially considering that real studying (deep, concentrated work on one topic; picture doing math work or active recall of knowledge / testing oneself) only really happens for bouts of 90min tops and then you have to rest (as in: should do something not cognitively straining) for AT LEAST 2-3hours before you can go again for another 90mins (if you want it to be effective)...and you can do that for 3 bouts of 90min max. Most people can't do more than three per day. Source: Dr. Andrew Huberman, Stanford, Neuroscientist
I don't know what "17 hours of studying" is supposed to be, other than tedious work and virtue signaling about how great of a work ethic and lack of a personal life he has.
The thought alone makes me want to vomit and cry about burnout.
@@nottomclancy2439 two/three hours of rest sounds like a long shot, Huberman in one of his videos states that 20 to 30 minutes after 90 minutes of intense focus is enough
Its easy to lie to sell courses mate
It’s also a lie, come on man.
Thank you for this great video 😙
I'm narcoleptic and missing even one nights sleep will put me into a violent psychosis

Thanks for the support my friend
Pure banger after banger sir. Tysm 🙏🙏🙏
Thanks man
Great video, really helpful
Never heard of Sea of Stars. Might have to check it out.
You look so happy in the thumbnail
When you say you’re privileged, you’ve missed a greater point, it doesn’t matter where you are in comparison to other people, it only matters where you start and where you finish…
I worked my ass off in a factory Night Shift for years, saved and studied, my wage is 500% higher now “and I’ll work harder to increase it even more”
But you worked night shifts for years, that doesnt sound good at all
Imho journey is more important than destination
And imho what you just said sounds like a life wasted for material accumulation lol
Anyways whoever is reqding these comments i wouldnt listen to OPs advice
Go live your life
Have sex during the night, dont work
Enjoy your life, dont gaslight yourself into serfdom like OP
Btw if you were privileged you wouldnt need to work night shifts for years
Its very important where you start, i mean yea, you are now paid like a lord, but you lived a life of a serf and you sold your young years to serfdom
Which prolly very little amount of people are jelous of
It seemed to me that you didn't teach this way in iCanStudy when it comes to scheduling.
My margin of error for estimating the time a task takes is so minuscule that it has fueled my procrastination.
the first day thanking Justin Sung for his educational video
Thank you
Thank you, Dr Sung. This video has really helped me. However I have a question: When do I draw out the schedule, Should I do it the night before the day or find one day and draw for like 5 days?
I ll meet u soon, for further experience that u don't share online!!
Sea of Stars, a good choice
haha the threatening and insulting yourself in your own schedule part is so funny 😂but I feel like it's not bad -- it's probably better to write those things down and use them as motivation than to quietly and incessantly internalizing those things in our heads.
omg, ¨i had no time to like this video¨ bit was pure gold. you should be a comedian
Thank u so much doc ☺️❤...
Im just working bread maker at my aunt's bake shop 7 to 11 o'clock
I do something of a bullet journal its different than what youtubers nd creators hv exploited them to
Its very flexible and it a pocket notepad. I dnt like digital scheduling because I tend to forget about them or feel distracted or overwhelmed by them so i prefer that small lil pocket bullet journal ig If it will work for me i will keep doing it
4:43 is when the actual vid begins
I understand why there's a lecture on sleep and its necessity here, since it's apparently not something many productivity-oriented students prioritize, it's just kind of amusing to watch this as someone with three sleep disorders who needs 10 hours of sleep a night to be functional.
Also, yeah, the percentage of people who can genuinely function on six or seven hours of sleep is significantly below 0.01% of the population -- and that's at the higher end of the estimations of the number people in the world who are functional on 6 to 7 hours, to say nothing of those who are entirely functional on less than that.
Im also way more capable in the morning, been doing the cognitively demanding tasks in the morning and save the more tedious stuff for after lunch
this is really interesting
it was lucky for me to know you
Thanks
Ok since your a doctor im going to consult you what's good or bad about not sleeping a overnight.
You were not studying 120 hrs a week. 24 hrs minus sleeping, walking to and from class, errands, taking showers, using the restroom, preparing food and eating does not equate to 17 hrs.
Plus 100-hour of work time per week, thats just bs.
@@richardsteve6089 well he meant while he wasn’t working. I know what it’s like to study 60+ hours a week, and it’s pure hell. Doubling that is impossible and such a disrespectful lie.
What a channel is this damn damn!❤
How do you relax? And how much?
great vid

Hi I'd like to join the course
Priorities:
3 how to create my mind with the most efficiency
2 Training to handle cognitive load
1 finding out my flaws in different and various ways and learning what you'll teach me
learning how to study more efficiently for 3 years,
I am at the point that's close to getting frustrated as I don't have anyone to teach me directly and point out my misunderstandings or limitations.
Not supporting a compatible version of TH-cam, my tablet doesn't support the links attached where I can sigh up
What should I do?
By not sleeping, i had no time To “LiKe ThIs ViDeO 👍😁”
Thank you
I have a question - if you give much more time than you need to complete a task, won't you be less productive due to Parkinson's Law?
As someone with kids and med school where sleep can be difficult to get, am I able to compensate at all with short (like 30 min) naps?
School system is failing you, if you're going to med school and they don't immediately teach you about the effects of sleep, nutrition and exercise lol.
No. You can't really compensate with naps. It helps, but is nowhere near as effective as restful 8h of sleep and especially the last two hours being the most important ones, only occuring after ~6h of sleep.
Check out Matthew Walker, a sleep scientist and has a book on sleep: "Why we sleep"
Most people are obsessed with structure instead of result.
Interesting
