  • A walking tour in the historic Aleppo Souq suffered significant damage and destruction due to a fire that burned for days in September 2012. The Aleppo Souk, also known as Souk al-Madina, was a historic marketplace in Aleppo, Syria, located on the ancient Silk Road. It was a significant cultural and economic hub, dating back to medieval times, and was once a major tourist attraction

It is so good to see how willingly the people are back at work, re-building. Their will has not been broken. Thank you so much for sharing with us this vision of a hopeful Aleppo, after all these years where Aleppo was associated with terror, bombs, hunger, fear and death.

Thank you for again a very interesting walk through Aleppo. After having found your information below the video, I could search for old videos on TH-cam about Souk al-Madina marketplace, this, to find out how it was before the damage and destruction realized what we witness in the video above. Though there are now seemingly quite some selling points, that, what it was, is gone: the original market had a rich diversity of products, even a barber shop was there. I saw an Aleppo soap shop also, anyhow, it hurts to realise what is gone. I wonder how "they" have manged to ruin this open indoor market, so, INSIDE. However, though so much seems to be lost, it is rich of culture, still, in the products, especially the herbs, the spices. Those watchers who love different cultures, know the difference with western cities: all in the west is the same. A shop in France is the same as a shop in the Netherlands for the same products, all is packed, and all is presented as "bulk". Westerners walk like individuals in a grey crowd, and one can feel incredibly lonely, while we see here, despite the ruins on so many spots, very vivid people, part of a community of humans, where one can connect with. From within. Without saying one word or understanding their language.

I once heard AOC say that 60% of Americans make $60,000 or less and if those 60% are like me they do not know how the rest of the world lives.... Maybe it's by design, very interesting to see a walk through Aleppo

Who wears the clothes that are for sale? I don’t see any of these dark robes that women wear for sale. Who wears the dresses? I saw only two little girls and one looked like a tourist. Where are the young girls?
