SO true. I pay attention to the culture around me and I know who Taylor Swift is. Still can’t name a song by her, but I recognize her very easily. THAT’S a celebrity! Like a Kardashian (they’re related to to husband/dad Robert but how many of us have any clue as to what it is that any of them actually do for work?), a celebrity is just KNOWN! This is why I wasn’t disappointed when there was no mention of Mariska Hargitay (mom Jayne Mansfield, dad Mickey Hargitay). I don’t think folks just KNOW who she is that well. @@MajesticalHonky the cousins found on Finding Your Roots ARE distant. They don't find first cousins. They find cousins so far removed that the only proof of a connection is DNA. If you are, say, 6th cousins you share great great great great great grandparents, more than likely from at least the 1700s or further back. That's distant. Saying cousins cannot be distant relatives is insane.

If it had been anything closer than third or fourth cousins, they would’ve said “hey let’s figure this out.” First cousins, they definitely would have made a big deal about it in the show. But I remember these episodes and thinking it was odd that Dr. Gates wasn’t clear on the degree of cousin.
