I love Howard's horror stories, and "Pigeons..." is a great one. It also has a title guaranteed to make me laugh - guess it was scarier in the 1930s. :) As for the players feeling a bit trapped, that it rather a trope or theme of horror, which, as you point out, can conflict with the "game elements."

Love that your game ended in a TPK. That'll teach them not to run away when they have the chance! Respect for killing off your players' investigators and letting them control the zombies after.
