    I've never run or played a one-on-one for CoC, but I did run one for a friend in WFRP. It's really a fun way to go more in-depth with a character and setting than you often can with multiple players.

    The more I see failed Library use, the more I appreciate the GUMSHOE system.

      Yes, it's especially tricky in one-to-one scenarios when there is no one else as a back-up to roll. I don't run into this issue as much when 4 players are in the library all researching.

    Another system I used to play _a lot_ and would like to get back to: World of Darkness (modern) -- where you mentioned encouraging a player to be more RP-centric with even just small actions, inhabiting a character in-the-moment with things like using the restroom, staring out a window, pacing about the room to stretch and have a break from sitting and all the little things outside of just single-mindedly completing tasks -- those are things I'd often try to get my players to do _voluntarily_ in that game simply so that I could slip in little tidbits of set-dressing and atmosphere and minor hints.
    In any of the numerous games I may run now -- all of which are narrative-focused, btw -- and if I am not getting those little RP moments from the player, well I'll sometimes commandeer the player's character for a brief moment just to inject those moments. Nothing too major, something like"
    "while you spend the rest of the evening reading through the books you obtained and cross referencing that with your map and the notes you have on the artifact, you find yourself needing a break here and there. Around 7:30pm you're standing in the small kitchenette of the room waiting for the kettle to boil for your tea and your thoughts have wandered from your reading and have softened into a dull buzz of noise and you find yourself just staring blankly into the middle distance, not entirely present. It was probably just for a few moments that you were in that not-quite-conscious state when you are jolted back to the here and now by the sharp whistle of the kettle. Blinking a few times, you come back to yourself and prepare your cup of tea. It's a very long few minutes of sipping your hot tea carefully and glancing back at the table littered with papers and opened books, when your gaze wanders to the curtained window. Maybe, you think to yourself, a walk would be good, maybe -- and there's the briefest moment when you swear you saw something in the corner of the room, just at the edge of your vision, crouched darkly in the corner... but when you look there's nothing there.
    "A few more sips of tea, perhaps too big of sips as the hot tea is just shy of painful as you swallow. Yes, a break would be good, your mind is getting exhausted, but you can't let go of your need to find the answers. So you set the thought aside, you take a deep breath, and make your way back to the books.
    "It's around 9 when you find it hard to keep focusing on reading. But you've found out [information]. What do you do next?"
    It depends on the player -- some people are more amenable to these little interludes of me dictating some elements, I may do more asking than telling (would your character take a break to stretch their legs or have some food?). But it also depends on the character, as I may not have a good enough grasp of the character to do more than a single sentence before I'm asking the player what they do.

    I finally convinced one of our group to use Call of Cthulhu for his next mini-game (a handful of sessions at most), since I'm still running Scum and Villainy on my nights and it may be quite a while before I get to run CofC. But that works out, because I very genuinely have wanted to be a player, and so far it's exactly what I wanted it to be. It's a shame I didn't make my way to CofC sooner.

      Great example, thank you for sharing! That's a fantastic way for the keeper to play out the evening of research if they have a player that is not as RP focused.

    Just finished watching. Question, is the adventure playable using the CoC Starter box?

      Yes, absolutely. I think this is a great scenario using the starter set. Just refresh yourself on sanity loss and combat rules and you should be good to go!

    Good video! Spark of Life (dmsguild) is another one to one scenario if you were looking for another one.
