MDF is a lot less tolerant of moist environments , it is in fact horrible in moisture.

its the screw holding capacity for me that made up my mind in favor of particle board

    • @Mr.WS6

All you have to do is drill a hole first then put screw in because there no voids for the wood to move so it cracks off. Drill hole screw goes in 0 break offs. Partical boad is trash. They are putting it on new built homes and it should be outlawed. Once water touches it, it turns into a sponge and crumbles.

The screws used in both MDF & PARTICLE boards are full threaded screws & not the regular 1/2 threaded screws generally known as wood screws. Its an advantage to use full threaded screws for more life span of the furniture pieces.

In my experience, MDF soaks up water like a sponge and turns into a mushy paper. Particle Board keeps its shape and just bubbles, which can be sanded down. As for screws, MDF hates screws. They rip out and that's the end of your project/furniture. PB is very good about fasteners.

    • @oldi184
      @oldi184 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

I agree. Because in reality MDF is just a very very thick sheet of paper. Particle board is a still a wood board because it contains much bigger "chips" of wood.
I prefer to use Particle boards in my home.

I find some of these claims quite surprising. I've been using particle board, called chipboard here in the UK for years. In fact, in the 1970's I was a designer/salesman for a major industrial racking and shelving company and we used to use chipboard panels for when heavy loads meant steel shelving wasn't strong enough. 3/4 inch chipboard sheets over an 18" span could hold in excess of 100lbs per sq ft. MDF wasn't widely available at that time but from what I've experienced in more recent years I'd be surprised if MDF could be used as effectively.
Although I've had various flat pack furniture over more recent years that use MDF, it seems it's usually used for where a superior finish is required such as cupboard doors and drawer fronts. Load bearing parts still more commonly use chipboard. My impression is definitely that MDF is softer and has zero water resistance making it unsuitable for exrerior use.. Interior grade chipboard isn't much better but flooring grade chipboard has a high degree of water resistance.

Long story short, Particleboard is the absolute CHEAP SHIT and MDF is a little better but still crappy...although there are many reasons to choose MDF IF there is going to be a low chance or no chance of encountering moisture or high temp... IF MDF is used in kitchen furniture or bathroom furniture it will degrade over time.... i dont care what marketing bullshit the seller or maker of MDF products use and sell to you, its just the nature of the material as it is still porous... sure you can use all kinds of laminates and sealants and stuff BUT the material itself is porous... BTW, solid wood is porous too, BUT it deals with moisture and degradation differently and using simple natural sealants is enough to protect most wood species from water damage...
So MDF is actually a good choice to use for prototyping, shelves, drawers, and many other applications which dont have to deal with great loads...
Particle board is just that, its a board of compressed garbage and waste from wood processing. One of the major components are WOOD DUST and GLUE... and not just any glue but the TOXIC kind with formaldehyde... so yea, think about this, if there is a fire, you are LESS likely to survive because not only will you have to fight the fire and smoke, but you will have to fight POISONOUS SMOKE...
Seriously, IKEA furniture should be banned from selling any kind of products that contain these toxic products like plastics and formaldehyde based adhesives, resins, etc...

If it's colour is yellowish then it contains more softwood n hence it will be smoother n if it's colour is darker then it contains more hardwood so it's strength will be more. You can check test certificate or data sheet while purchasing for density check. The surface should be sanded otherwise veneer will unglue.

    Good production and clear explanation.
Liking is one thing but sharing?
Conservation of resources and deforestation are things to be concerned about.
For clarity purposes, quality MDF could be used for applications subject to less wear and load but before taking a decision observe the MDF/particle board sheets edges, vertically stored and if they are warped or coming apart. Also note date of manufacture. Proper MDF is quite decent.
I personally, would never consider particle board in my home unless for temporary use.
Citing ISI specifications is one thing but a computer table should last a lifetime, and not like shoes! They are also not cheap!
Factories can purchase steel with and also without ISI specifications, the latter being inferior!
For those starting a home, it's not a simple issue, hence please consider ply wood and solid wood for your items also.
Protective coatings like paint varnishes, and laminates can extend the life of your items if done on all surfaces.
Please continue your videos and make them better as you can surely do it!

MDF soaks up water like a sponge and then grows exponentially and becomes useless. I prefer, for almost the same price: form ply. It is Pinus Radiata and has a marine glue line. It is not waterproof but will not swell when in contact with water. It has an A and a B side. A side is smooth and clear while the B side has knots and imperfections. If either side is vinyl wrapped the result is a waterproof, strong, lightweight and good looking piece of furniture.
