This is why I love TH-cam. Because of videos like this, just waiting for when I need it. Thanks for posting an informative video. That and you managed to make a video about MDF vs Particle board super interesting. Well done.
All you have to do is drill a hole first then put screw in because there no voids for the wood to move so it cracks off. Drill hole screw goes in 0 break offs. Partical boad is trash. They are putting it on new built homes and it should be outlawed. Once water touches it, it turns into a sponge and crumbles.
I use MDF for shutters and particle for framing, but mostly as explained it was really honest of him ,MDF disadvantage is one low screw holding capacity, but I trust the product good for business. Thank you.
I don't normally comment on videos, but this on was extremely informative. I would love to watch more such comparison videos. Keep up the great work. 👍
In my experience, MDF soaks up water like a sponge and turns into a mushy paper. Particle Board keeps its shape and just bubbles, which can be sanded down. As for screws, MDF hates screws. They rip out and that's the end of your project/furniture. PB is very good about fasteners.
I agree. Because in reality MDF is just a very very thick sheet of paper. Particle board is a still a wood board because it contains much bigger "chips" of wood. I prefer to use Particle boards in my home.
The screws used in both MDF & PARTICLE boards are full threaded screws & not the regular 1/2 threaded screws generally known as wood screws. Its an advantage to use full threaded screws for more life span of the furniture pieces.
In particle board , do we use both Urea Foraldehyde & phenolic Resin , or just one of them and if both do you have or recommend a video that describe the manufacturing steps ..... thanks
I find some of these claims quite surprising. I've been using particle board, called chipboard here in the UK for years. In fact, in the 1970's I was a designer/salesman for a major industrial racking and shelving company and we used to use chipboard panels for when heavy loads meant steel shelving wasn't strong enough. 3/4 inch chipboard sheets over an 18" span could hold in excess of 100lbs per sq ft. MDF wasn't widely available at that time but from what I've experienced in more recent years I'd be surprised if MDF could be used as effectively. Although I've had various flat pack furniture over more recent years that use MDF, it seems it's usually used for where a superior finish is required such as cupboard doors and drawer fronts. Load bearing parts still more commonly use chipboard. My impression is definitely that MDF is softer and has zero water resistance making it unsuitable for exrerior use.. Interior grade chipboard isn't much better but flooring grade chipboard has a high degree of water resistance.
I'd like to find a video like this explaning all the differences of all types of plywoods existed, from the very basic one up to the Baltic Birtch Plywood.
Very helpful and easy to understanding. Provided the type of information I needed to make informed decisions in choosing between MDF and particle board.
Informative video. I bought an engineered wood, fancy looking study table few months ago. It had no lamination or protective paint at one side and after a few months molds grew and got it completely. I live in a humid coastal place that sees heavy rain. Now there seems to be no way to remove that mold and my money is just wasted. I wasn't this aware as well. LESSON: wood is best
So MDF doesn't hold screws very well in comparison to particle board? If that's the case wouldn't the screws in higher end furniture loosen or not hold then?
What is the best material to use to level a subfloor so basically I have floor boards which are not level throughout a whole living room and wanted to board up the floor to make it level so which will be best to use
MDF soaks up water like a sponge and then grows exponentially and becomes useless. I prefer, for almost the same price: form ply. It is Pinus Radiata and has a marine glue line. It is not waterproof but will not swell when in contact with water. It has an A and a B side. A side is smooth and clear while the B side has knots and imperfections. If either side is vinyl wrapped the result is a waterproof, strong, lightweight and good looking piece of furniture.
Thanks. It will be helpful if you put some actual numbers in the table rather than just say "more" or "less". That is really simplistic and doesn't add much. Makes it very repetitive.

MDF is a lot less tolerant of moist environments , it is in fact horrible in moisture.
Agree with u
This was probably the best, most informative video in the least amount of time.
its the screw holding capacity for me that made up my mind in favor of particle board

Thank you so much. All I wanted was a quick explanation of the differences. You covered every question I had plus gave me more info.
MDF is destroyed very easily by water. This guy doesn't know what he's talking about.
Drew Lyons He is comparing mdf with particleboard and he is right to say that particleboard can be destroyed much more easily compared to mdf.
@@demirg Alright now. Cmon. You sound like a nice guy. Were all friends here
MDF can't be destroyed by water.... It depends on density of the MDF.... 550 & 650... Density doesn't break easily...
Very thorough and easy to follow with the chart model of conveying information
That was super helpful in my decision to use MDF, thank you.
Great video, always wanted to know about MDF, i'll be using MDF a lot more from now on, thanks for the video 👍.
Thanks so much for the very concise comparison. Very helpful.
Does regular walking a lot on particle board make it break eventually?
