I am a foreign student in the US. I was shocked in my first semester in the US when I saw students learning simple algebra in college. We studied calculus in high school and trigonometry in 8th standard (very advanced). I took calculus in my first semester in my US college and got A by only going to class during exam time.
I am Indian. Our maths difficulty rises from early classes. But I adore the Japanese education system. Up until class 2 they dont have exams but give huge importance to development of morals. Students clean their own toilets. Now thats discipline
I am from Australia, and self taught myself Trigonometry and Differential Calculus at 14. The education system wasn't there to help, but loving parents had to buy me the books. Unfortunately they were poor, and books were prohibitively expensive. Things are better now, if you are driven to learn, then the internet provides infinite access for all!
In India for the poor and deprived, their mantra for success is MATHEMATICS because it needs only two things, brain and hard work, which a poor child has in ample.
@legendary/Gaming Legendaries !! stop always bringing race, ethnicity in a simple matter. Intellectualism has its place, it's not the place or the time.
India is not a poor country bro .It is in fact the sixth richest country in the world with a nominal GDP of $8 trillion. But still we have the largest no of poor people in the world but that is only because of overpopulation. We also have many rich people. There is a large unequal economy divide.
@@uddangwaldangwal1586 well gdp dosent really explains what is the average standard of living of the individual in the country....And it's been stated many times that the massive gdp is only because of the massive population....But times are changing and we should hope for the best
Very true. No education system is perfect. That is why Asian people still go to universities in the US. My thought is the US should apply a more "Chinese" way and Asian education system should become less competitive.
This is actually true, they see good on us and we see the good on them, basically I always support kids to be given ample amount of childhood rather than sending to KG at age 2
In India and China, discipline starts with parents, passed down to their kids. Our culture is respect for elders and good sense of direction in life. Parents instill the value of hard work, confidence, self respect and pious, and that creates a man and his community.
@@Arzay15.9.01 Can't say about China, but India never ignored gender equality. Now you must be thinking of Caste Discrimination in India right? That was not in our culture from the source, our culture went thorough many rough situations (last time brits destroyed us for 200 yrs) so in this times people made there unions to oppose the rulers. Which then converted into an caste system. Now things are very much loose. It doesn't matter who you are. Of course there's Muslim Hindu controversy, which I say is a healthy controversy (Not physical) cause we are a victim of terrorism.

(Just for example : If you mock a road sweeper and if he files a FIR [case] against you. You will be in trouble now). So now the the discrimination exists but is declining every day. The young age is open minded, skilled, have values. The problem is that the picture west media portray to there audience of us is still decay old. You would know that India have slums but you probably don't know that the Biggest statue in the world is in India (Statue of Unity). You know that theres racism in India, but you won't know that Gandhi's first encounter was against racism. You may know India is one of the biggest Unemployed country but you may not know we also have the most skilled youth. India have it's own silicon valley. Reliance Jio is the only telecom company in the world without any single Chinese equipment. In India Education is too rigorous. No time for sports or any other activities if you want to excel in education as you might fear losing out by as less as 1 mark. There is entrance exam on every level even for 1st standard. If you do MBBS, then you need post graduation entrance for MD and this is extremely tough if you are from unreserved category. This system does not provide enough scope on free thinking as students are under constant pressure.

I am an American citizen studing in India, I just want to say Indians and Chinese are generations ahead when it comes to overall discipline and performance. The reason America is still afloat is because a few crown jewels of America do it. Please centralise education on national basis. Make the position of teachers more competitive.
I am a Lecturer and when I moved to UK and started teaching here, I was nothing but utter shocked comprehending the level of knowledge, fundamentals taught, reasoning ability and aptitude were too low to match the bachelors even I was teaching in so good university back in India. Here, they have all tools, support systems, facilities and yet they do not want to learn for the sake of knowledge. They just want to get away with it for the sake of doing it. Barely I interacted 1 or 2 students who shared interest to gain knowledge understand how I can benefit from this in life and career. But the rest were like lost hopes in Education especially higher education. The predominate students are from China, India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Singapore, Japan and Oh! Boy these young minds were so on fire with lots of skills, knowledge, reasonings, sincerity - they blew my mind. The difficulty level reaches so late here that by that time Asian students have already grabbed the CGPA and scores in their batch and got placed or hired by MNCs already.

Indian schooling is of high standard . Our mathematics curriculum is very strong . We have quite advanced level Calculus in XI-XII standard that acts as a solid base to any of the engineering subjects. Indian mathematicians are really good. A normal boy who is getting educated in a very less developed government school is far interior of states aspire to do well in maths and he had so much interest that I was amazed. There was this guy who wants to be a big mathematician . He loved numbers and did calculations so quickly and he was just 7 years old . Generally boys are more attracted towards the technical side while girls are more attracted towards life science and medical science. Indian doctors are of high quality . Sure we face problems of high population but you know when the educated people rises , the population is going to decline which results in high quality students
We do have a reading culture. I live in West Bengal , India and Kolkata is known as the art capital of India. We have produced great authors like Rabindranath(Nobel Prize winner for literature ) , Satyendranath , Bankim Chandra ,etc. We do have plenty of bookstores. College Street is a whole avenue of bookstores for a mile. We organize International Book Fair anually which is the largest book fair in whole of Asia . In a fair over 600 stalls are setup. Millions visit it every year. We have over 8 universities in our city itself out of which 6 are of National importance and are recognized internationally including IIEST , IIT , ISI , University of Cal , Jadavpur Uni. Except that we have plenty of other colleges. We have separate colleges for Arts , Law . My brother is an IIT passout in Marine Engineering and he worked. Regarding Academics influence , we have a huge amount . The hurdle is the politics and corruption which is reducing a lot over the couple of years. Infact do you know that internet users in the country have increased from 90,000 to 350000 in one year ? I myself have completed Masters in Computer Science as aspiring to do PHD and I am from a simple middle class family. My sister also is doing Post Doctorate in HIV AIDS research from University of Rochester , NY. Academics are highly inculcated in middle class families because of the lack of choice in other fields like Sports or musician even though there are plenty of people in the field of sports and music. Some of the people of distant villages in the state of West Bengal alone are MIT passouts working in ISRO , NASA , We also have extremely rich medical universities, rich in terms of knowledge. It's just because of our economy being not that great that India is the cheapest medical tourism place in the world. Now that the economy is rising heavily it will cross barriers. I am telling you the reason INDIA IS slower than CHINA in GDP is because of democracy. We grew 7.3% this year and projected 8% next year. China was 6.9% this year . We have a young population . That's another story. The biggest library in the world was Nalanda Library which was raided by the Arabs historically. Nevertheless we have huge public libraries here. The Kolkata public library is one of the biggest in Asia. I have been to America this summer and stayed their for few months . I am honestly saying Americans have very less knowledge of the rest of the world .Consider movies even , I know about Star wars culture , AFI , Citizen Kane , importance of B/W films even though I ma in the field of science. I am also a musician by hobby. American students have think of Indian films as Bollywood which is utterly not true . Because of linguistic diversity we have over 20+ film industries. Satyajit Ray (Oscar winner) who was one of the influences of Martin Scorcese ,Spielberg , Lucas , never made a single Bollywood film . The highest grossing India movie is not from bollywood. In the past 10 years we had 2 nobel laureates in Economics and people are trying to come back to India now because they understand what it is . We are promoting primary education for all . It will take some time but it will happen . Compared to the US , we are just a 65 year old country . We got our independence in 1947 and our neighbours try to hinder our progress. But we still kept developing Our Previous president was a scientist , one of the leading scientist in the field of space research and aviation
+Robbert Lee hey buddy i do agree some stuff that you have stated but if you wanna see cons of a country/thing then you will see only the bad side. It depends on the perspective you see. So yeah each and every country does have bad and good in it.
+Robbert Lee Mr. Lee. Now let me start of by saying; this entire debate was about how smart you and I ( I grew up in Texas, pretty much the toilet of America, well one of em) are in comparison to countries who even though they have all their problems of a third world country would have (govt corruption, gaps amongst their citizens on riches, infrastructure not updated) they still would still, could still , take any test that can be thrown to them from any college professor from any ivy league school and still pass it with out even trying. Now please look back on your post and think about how you try to defend your country with the choice words you used to counterattack Mr. sanch Sanchayan when all he said was he was taught things at an early age than you. Stop trying to describe other peoples mistakes and their weaknesses when you should take a hard look in a mirror bud. You sound stupid as fuck when you spout bullshit about our government being the best it is when we could be doing the same thing as india. in terms of how much we spend on the precious education for all the children of "mericuh fuck yeah". The way you write this post tells me a lot about you. you sound like a fucking little kid who assumes he's a big boy who can read, write, and count money. WOW, you must be so proud of your achievement my good sir. Count your fucking blessings, and realize you live in a country where you don't have to see all the corruption that works behind the shadow. where you can live your life till you die eating three meals a day , and sleeping in a comfy bed. in your house that you bought till you retire and you become the bitch of the government who now lives off social security checks every month. GOD BLESS AMERICA
I agree with this guy. He is correct in assessing that one of the key needs for developing a good education system is to inculcate discipline among the students . China, India, Japan etc have got that right by teaching everyone at a young age to respect their elders and have mutual respect for everyone in general. Our defence and other technological achievements are directly linked to advancement in education. I hope the Indian govt realises this soon and pushes the research facilities of its higher education institutions.
The main reason why Indian and Chinese are ahead in education is just simply because they are taught manners and discipline first, and after that learning comes. Every time I looked at my son's test sheet and home works (8th grader), my heart aches. It's just so basic. And when I asked him math questions , he's often so confused about many concepts and don't even know how to write a clear proof step by step (he told me his teacher never taught how to). And the more ironic thing is, he has been straight A student since 1st grade and is currently in DOUBLE HONOR math class (learning 10th grade Geometry) and was accepted to a very selective STEM academy!

I have studied in the USA. I liked several things about the education system in the USA. First, none of the teachers force you to study (unlike India sometimes). If you are in college, you should be smart enough to set your priorities straight. Second, there is no pressure of scoring a particular number in tests because you are graded and as long as you are scoring more than 90 to 92% you get an A. Also, the Americans know how to use the technology which I found very intriguing. I attended a community college when I first came here. Then went on to complete my Bachelors and Masters which were 100% online which allowed me to keep working and studying at the same time. You can't do this in India. On the other hand, as an Indian, I can say that the Indians give a lot of importance to education no matter what part of the country you are from. I guess both THE COUNTRIES CAN LEARN SOMETHING FROM EACH OTHER.

I am Indian and I believe that some of the educational techniques in America are pretty good. Problem in America is too much freedom. Freedom is wedded to discipline. Discipline and many things are missing in America.
Let me tell you this to my American friends, being an Indian (born, brought up, educated), and having spent substantial amount of time in the USA; do not model your anything based on other countries. I found Americans to be more 'fully rounded' than people in other countries. I think the key to American culture is self determination. Keep it that way. Do not look at the 'control' as you see it in India or China; the near absence of discipline issues in Indian schools come from the familial culture not from 'control'. I was not aware that the auto and shop classes were taken out of US education system. It is understandable (lack of funds) but very sad. India used to have vocational education, as I am told, when my dad was in middle and high school. I have seen what difference it makes to ones personality and character having such type of education. Yes, education gets higher priority in India and China but most of the 'well-educated' people you find coming from India are from private schools. Early education gets priority more in the Indian and Chinese cultures, not necessarily when drafting national policies on education. The government spends better on education when it comes to universities which has led to top world class universities coming up in India. But the high emphasis on education in Indian culture is more or less balanced off by the lack of enterprise and entrepreneurial attitude. That is why you may find more CEO's, MD's and top execs of Indian origin in multi-national companies than companies owned by people of Indian origin. So, no, you don't have to model your education system on any other country's. You have to model your education system based on your core values, while taking good points from other countries.
I think it's about the fact that while India is an ancient civilization, the country has received independence just about 75 years ago. We had to pick our country up from the ruins, learn to live together, find balance, govern ourselves, set up an education system and start industrialization all in these 75 years while undoing the damages done during 200 years of colonial exploitation. Ofcourse it took us time to catch up with other countries. For the longest time Indians were focused on getting a good education and job security and nobody wanted to take risks with startups but now things have changed. India is literally in the middle of an entrepreneurial revolution, there are startups coming out left and right and we are churning out lots of unicorns(companies valued at a billion dollars or more). So don't worry we are getting there, it wasn't a problem with the education system but rather our country was building a foundation and a level playing ground. Indians do own lots of companies today and this revolution is only going to explode in the coming years.
Shantanu - unfortunately Indias rise to power is much slower than China's. India will one day be a superpower but it will take far more time than a decade.
The indian system is really great and we have all classes from nursery to 12th all in same school under one roof and in the US middle school, elementary, high school are all different
I think he is being a bit too harsh on USA education system. Yes India and China are doing well but still it's western countries which are at the forefront of innovation. About less disciplined USA kids: Well, a little bit of rebellious attitude is good for being a non-conformist and being creative and choosing ones own path or following ones own heart. I don't think anyone will hear any story such as that of Bill Gates, Zuckenberg or Steve Jobs where a kid drops out of college to start something of his own any soon from India and China in near future. Still long way to go. The good thing is irrespective of where the talent is coming from we are all collaborating to make this world a better place with technology.
Many IITian's have sold their Million dollar companies, before even getting their Bachelor Degree. In which world are you living?? Many IITians like me are not going leave India. Not all work for money, We work for Nation!!!!

Can we all agree that rigurous education programs are not the only factor in success, or at the very least that they don't have to be idolized? Hard work and respect are extremely important qualities, however, having been a "perfect" student all of my life I can tell you that the pressure, stress and neglect of basic physical and emotional needs is no joke. I don't think it's the way to go at all.
I really respect this man coz he is trying to make his country better by learning how the things are in different countries , there is nothing to feel superior or inferior irrespective of country which we belong as no one is perfect.
The mantras are from the Taittiriya Upanishad, Shikshavalli I.11.2, which says: matrudevo bhava, pitrudevo bhava, acharyadevo bhava, atithidevo bhava. It literally means "be one for whom the Mother is God, be one for whom the Father is God, be one for whom the Teacher is God, be one for whom the guest is God".

I agree - the U.S. K-12 Ed system is far superior to the system in India. India has some great private schools but the public school system for the most part is pretty bad!!!Just look at the PISA scores for India - I believe they were dead last in the world. On the other hand, China has a very good K-12 Ed system and it is constantly improving.
I agree with u. I dint go China hence don't know much about it uncle won't comment on that part. What is different is education is a high priority culturally speaking and the zeal to succeed is lot more in India and China than the US. With that zeal we overcome the challenges.... :)

The best education system is to combine china/korea's system with US. Schools in the US should be more serious. Teachers in the US need to be better prepared and passionate for teaching. The students attitudes must change. Students need to have the passion for learning. There should be a national curriculum that every student should try to meet.
The first lesson we were thought as an asian (indian) "your education starts with ur respect for ur teachers" and when it comes to discpline we were also thought that jo matter however we are infront of no onewill atleast pretend when some one comes
In bharat ( also known as India) there is sanskrut saying which says मातृ देवो भवः। पितृ देवो भवः। आचार्य देवो भवः। Which means Mother is god. Father is god. Teacher is god. And it is like 5 thousand year old saying but USA is very young country and it takes time. So in future it may go well.
Sir keith I suggest u even look into Indian engineering and other institutions like IIT they may not be known around the world but most of the Indian people working in sillicon valley are IIT graduate students
I would like to tell you that the educational system in the public schools of India is terrible. Hardly any portion of the budget is spent on education in the states except a few states in the south. None of the Indian universities are amongst top 50 universities of the world. Focus is on quantity rather than quality.Even the private schools and colleges are terrible. The reason behind so many top class engineers and doctors we produce are the coaching/tutorial classes that almost every middle class kid attends in the evening after school with the aim of being able to get admission in the top government technical institutes. Otherwise except a few private and public schools, the situation is terrible.
+Your Daddy Saitama coaching classes and tutorials are one of the worst things that could have ever happened . i know that it was helpful once but it has become buisness for most of the the institutes to fool the children to get money and let them dream of helping them to get admiission in a good college.
Don't worry america you are not going to be beaten in super power race by china becz we indians are here to support America. indians are learning just to serve USA we learning to make America great. Although we indians live in poverty.
Are u kidding me we just don't fund our education and education system is based solely on memorizing. American education system is much better it's just that students are not as hard working over there as in India.
there education system is good but their students only loves party chill n other stuffs they got so much facilities than us if we could get those facilities then we can do much things 😞 but of total US population Indiana only 1% is there but each year almost 13% Indian students get graduate from whole US and it's huge no if our are only 1% there
Our education system is not solely based on memorizing. There are so many schools here which focus on learning through practice and research. If you dont know just shut up and instead try to change the process not generalizing it to whole india.
In India the most famous sentence about teacher is "Guru Govind Dono khade kake lagu paye balhari guru Apne Govind diyo bataye". In English Teacher and God is standing together I don't know who is more respected I'm blessed teacher that you introduce and tell me about God.

Keith, I would thank you so much for your passion about this issue. I am a Chinese american parent who has kids in American middle school and elementary school. I personally complete my college education in China and post graduation in USA. I have first hand experience about the differences between the two countries. To be honest, I am so worried about American secondary education system now. I think it's definitely the time for American people to wake up and exam our education system.
Ashish- the question should be - how many students will be happy in the USA when many of their futures bosses will be Chinese? The world is not fair and things will change dramatically within the next 20 years.
Ron Kv - I agree with you. I am doing a TEDx Talk on April 8, 22 at TEDx Grand Canyon University. I am the first K-12 educator in the world that has visited 7-10 public schools in the top 15 K-12 countries based on the 2018 PISA test. The best, in my opinion, are Finland, Estonia, Sweden, Germany, Switzerland, and Singapore. For me if I had a son, it would be a toss-up between Switzerland and Finland!
Maths and sciences are the strongest among Indian students. There's a lot of History of education in India. The world's first University was Takshshila established 2100 years ago and the second University of Nalanda was established 1400 years ago. So you see, education has always been in our genes.
Only some cities in China have participated in PISA but Chines education system is very strong and it is get stronger. Japan and South Korea are not small countries - depends on how you define small. It is not about how big or small a country is but more about the quality of its education system. Chinas system is veryyyyyyyyyyyy impressive - perhaps you need to go there and find out for yourself!!!

In India and China, discipline starts with parents, passed down to their kids. Our culture is respect for elders and good sense of direction in life. Parents instill the value of hard work, confidence, self respect and pious, and that creates a man and his community.

Say whatever you want . Doesn't really matter. Keep your jobs safe .

Some of the people of distant villages in the state of West Bengal alone are MIT passouts working in ISRO , NASA ,
We also have extremely rich medical universities, rich in terms of knowledge.

I am also a musician by hobby. American students have think of Indian films as Bollywood which is utterly not true . Because of linguistic diversity we have over 20+ film industries.

Ohh yeah in Kerala students is but they hardly get admission in college even someone who get ≤85 %
The whole country still follows the Victorian era education system so education system in Kerala is as shitty as every other state in the country. You have to shape tomorrow from today itself....
As an Indian i can definitely tell you that our education system is way more rigorous than west
He spoke so well. Proud of him 😊

Everything in the world is a comparison. Education is no exception!

The best education system is to combine china/korea's system with US.
Schools in the US should be more serious. Teachers in the US need to be better prepared and passionate for teaching. The students attitudes must change. Students need to have the passion for learning. There should be a national curriculum that every student should try to meet.

Public schooling is bad i agree but hence students prefer coaching classes which are quite good like in kota
