    I went to graduate school at MIT in the USA to study engineering. Quite a high percentage of fellow graduate students were from India. I asked them (perhaps patronizingly) if they were the very best students in India. One of them replied (and I still wonder if they were joking with me) that they came to MIT because they had failed to get into IIT.

      Anthony Lauder Na pretty sure it was true. My friends were looking at papers from MIT and they found it pretty easy to solve.

      Yk it's easy going to mit if you can pay the cost of living and tution fee ! Thats all ! People here prepare for 2 to 3 years 8-10 hr a day for jee mains still there no guarantee that you will get good rank, everyone is preparing for it with same intensity !

      I'm pretty sure that must have been a joke. But at the undergraduate level IITs certainly do offer one of world's best bachelor's programs in terms of quality of education.

      @shefk7325 5 ปีที่แล้ว +377

      @mayank jain reservation at the worst may block a portion of govt jobs, but if the system actually encouraged people they might find employment in the private sector too you know. (Stop blaming reservation for shitty education standards. Reservation is not the reason govt schools are sub standard or our colleges are not of world class level)

      Interesting you say this... true but it’s also not that bad. Having studied in the UK and seeing where firms are investing their money in, they’re leaving the UK (almost all the engineering firms have moved their R&D to Europe and Asia), and they’re building campuses in India. In time, we’ll be near the top hopefully

      I understand it's a cultural thing but the purpose of your life is not to please others. It's your life. Your happiness shouldn't rest on what your father thinks of you because he shouldn't be disowning you for something so trivial in the first place. Find something you like and get good at it, whether it's through formal education or not. Prove yourself to YOURSELF, not anyone else. The best advice I ever got was 'make sure to give 100% in those things you can control and don't stress about those you can't because they're beyond your control anyway'. If you studied and gave your best then you've already done your duty. Test scores aren't always a good indicator of how much we know and definitely not a good indicator of what we're capable of!

If he has practically disowned you, he has a) failed as a father 2) failed as a human being c) failed to understand that his son isn't a fucking carbon copy of his own ego. He should love you as a son, not a bloody trophy to show off to his mates.

Lol. And believe me, Chinese and Indians are not the brightest because their top scorers in these exams can hardly come up with such questions or solve these questions by themselves without coaching. I agree with all of the professors . The exam is not very appropriate for selecting students for engineering and science programs. But the population of India is so high that there is no other way. If you look at old IITJEE papers that used to be subjective then you might find them more appropriate but at that time the number of students giving that exam was very less. Also JEE is only to differentiate hard working students who can withstand the immense pressure of not only its exam but also its preparation , from others

      That seems to be exactly the reason for what this exam is. It may be inappropriate as a selection tool for future researchers--and I agree with this view--but what other way can you devise to select from a huge population of people the few to fill the limited number of seats at the university? Making the exam extremely difficult seems to be the only solution.

      Their responses will be same. I am an IITian and my professor also used to criticise it. But what can they do when they have to select students from such a huge no. He used to criticise us too that u have learned short cut methods but not the concepts. Well... all professors are not good in iit, some teaches like this paper where u have to just cram things. But still I personally got to learn from some very good professors in 4 yrs who used to stress on understanding and concept and once in a while, they used to remind us that forget those method which u used to crack this exam.

      Some of them on high level of food chain are arrogant. They will only consider this type of false meritocracy. Even at the Masters level when you give GATE and get good rank , when you go for interviews they will select a candidate from their state. That's why you see more students from particular state in some IITs. System is biased , no one with the right power wants to improve it and what you can expect from corrupt and illiterate politicians.

      @@nehalamba2747 yes it depends on students but when it comes to coaching for IITs mega cities will trump out victorious. Mega city means more money inflow for teachers, which means more practice and awareness for students. What about small town and village students? They have to suffer the most. I am sure our kids from that part are also talented then why there is a system that is biased towards coaching swarm of mega cities? Just think about unjust. It's like rich are becoming richer.

Most top companies will recruit you if you have the required skill set (which many Indian computer science graduates, even toppers don't). Grading in India is limited to rote learning.

    I felt the same way about "coaching centres" and self studied relying heavily on understanding than being "fast" and scored a rank in 5000s. Then went for 1 year of coaching and in the next and final attempt got a rank of 500s in 2009. Generalizing coaching centers is also not a great thought! I was lucky enough to have attended a coaching center that placed equal emphasis on learning as getting things done quickly. It's important for students to "want" to understand things. As someone who has cleared this exam twice, I can confidently say you don't clear this exam if you don't understand the concepts well and are just "fast". The infrastructure of coaching centers is bad, yes, but the exams are so demanding you got to at least attempt some test series to know where you stand, which is hard to gauge if you are self-studying. Just my 2 cents!
