I remember as a kid holding horses for the Ferrier, they always had home-made aluminum “totes” for rasps and knives, and everything else. They stood taller than a flat tray….might not be a bad idea for sockets and wrenches….
I'm now a retired heavy equipment mechanic. Years ago, when I had just started out, an old gentleman getting ready to retire taught me to work out of a tote tray setup like you have. The lesson served me well all of the years I worked. I was working at a Caterpiller dealer, and we had a big contractor with a big job going on. The contractor sent some of his mechanics to help on his equipment in our shop. This guy had a heavy-duty flat top box with a vice. It had two doors and two shelves. He had two tote trays that convently slipped on the shelf to lock up after hours. I had to ask about his simple setup. One tray had sockets, extensions, 3/8" air ratchet, and 1/2" impact. The other had wrenches on one end and assorted pliers, screwdrivers, and a few most common taps on the other end. Also, a hammer, some punches, and chizles were in the mix. His simple setup saved a lot of time opening drawers searching for the daily common use tools. Every time he laid a tool down, it went to its storage area in the tray. When he climbed on top of a machine, two trays with all he needed was at his fingertips. No climbing up and down forgetting this or that. Like I said, this has served me well for 43 years, and I still work out of trays.
I’ve been in the automotive repair industry for 30 years but I have the utmost respect for heavy equipment field mechanics. My father-in-law has been a heavy equipment mechanic since he enlisted in the Army during Vietnam and he’s still at it today. He’s tougher than woodpecker lips to still be crawling under that stuff at his age.

Wanted to stop by and say thank you for this video. I hadn’t ever thought of carrying a easy to grab tool box in the field as I always just pull up next to machine and start working. Seeing this video and putting a go box together is easily probably one of the most time saving things I have ever done. Highly recommend to any other field techs that see this!!
I watched this video a year ago when I got my firat job in the equipment business and didnt understand why you were carrying all your tools in a tray,opposed to a bag or just walking to your toolbox. Now after a year of work experience trays are all I use to carry my stuff,its really nice having all your tools at the top of the machine with you all layed out,no digging through bags or getting sore climbing up and down the tracks.
I’ve been in field service here in the PNW for about 5 years now and work with guys that have 15 plus years on me. And have never seen or thought to build one of these. It’d save so much time going back and forth to your truck for basic tooling. Thanks! I will be building one myself
Pretty awesome dude. I’m an elevator mechanic, I do heavy repair, just inside buildings instead of out in the elements, so hats off to you for getting up and getting out in the weather every day. Love seeing different field set ups. Different world down here in the big cities in TX as a rental mechanic. Lots of scissor and boom lifts. I carry a backpack since I spend so much time climbing stairs in skyscrapers. Definitely wish I had more calls on dirt equipment since that what i cut my teeth on. Keep it up 👍
I used to keep a backpack in the truck to throw tools in if the machines were broke down out in the unit or down a muddy road. It worked great for the long hikes.
@@offroadwrench5752 yep, that's what I have. Rental industry here, lots of skyscrapers and a ton of walking. Works out great for me. Has a 1/4 socket set, crescent wrench, and diag stuff. That's it. You climb 30 floors daily, you learn what you can live without. Took thousands and thousands of burned calories for me to get it figured out tho. 🤣🤣

thanks so much for sharing this 👍👍👍 I'm a mechanic working at a Hitachi dealership, somewhere on the other side of the globe 😁 My field toolset isn't as extensive as yours, but I have some sort of tool tray / tool tote for basic hand tools like yours. also, my service truck is much smaller than yours, we drive Hilux here. Forestry roads are generally good. Plantation roads are not, often can't be accessed with larger truck, hence the Hilux.
Looks awesome, I ran a similar set up for a long time. Last couple years I have changed to duffle bags and plastic molded tool kits with cordless everything.
My husband was a heavy equipment mechanic for 35 years. Upon his death, [cancer] I have all his tools. Hundreds of them . Well cared for. All quality stuff.Would like to sell them. Wondering their worth. Thank You.
I am very sorry for your loss. As far as the value of the tools. Unfortunately they bring pennies on the dollar at resale. The value in most hand tools is in the hands that are using them. Specialty tools are the exception. As long as they are still current applications, they can be sold at a decent value. Hopefully this helps.
I don’t mess around with SAE tools, wall drive metric covers most sizes. I’m a big fan of Koken wobble extensions, the knurling is aggressive and on the flared drive end, not half way down the shaft, great for grip.
I a field forklift mechanic from UK and love the spanners on spring clip looking for somthing similar any pointers on what they are off or where to get something similar 👍

Nature of the beast! It doesn't matter what brand of tool. Being a field mechanic will test them to there fullest. Mine were rusted within 6 months. This set of pliers is probably 10 years old. They look used and abused but are fully functional

Do you prefer a flex head ratcheting combo wrench over a fixed head ratcheting wrench? I need a full size set of metric wrench’s. I have a snap on regular combos to 24mm, but am thinking of getting a ratcheting set. What are your thoughts, and thanks for the video, love the tote idea.
I don't use any ratcheting wrenches. They don't hold up in the field. I've had 2 different sets if I remember correctly. Neither style held up and they went to the scrap yard.
Nope. I bought it from Cornwell 10+ years ago. Have tried to purchase more and can't locate it. Its currently one of the projects waiting on the plasma for the new burntable
On top of that, I recommend two ratchet straps 1"x15'. You can usually get two for less than $10. They are lifesavers when trying hold stuff together, holding up service panels/doors, keep things out of your way. I can't count how many times I've been in a predicament, even with other coworkers, where a ratchet strap saved the day.

Don't forget zip ties. I hate climbing down off a machine to get zip ties for securing hoses or a wire harness that I cut loose.
