- Developed by South African Denel Dynamics, Umkhonto surface-to-air missiles (SAM) have been operational by the Navies of South Africa, Algeria and Finland.

Designed to provide air defence capabilities for armed forces, they were developed by Denel Dynamics, a weapons manufacturer based in South Africa.
The missile is also known as Spear and can engage a wide range of airborne threats, such as combat aircraft, helicopters, missiles and unmanned aerial vehicles.
The Mkonto missile does not use Swedish radar. This test was conducted by the Swedes who very impressed with the Mkonto air defense system,and they hooked the system up with their own radar. The Swedes were the first to purchase the system.
From what I've heard, a key differentiation is that the launch platform is built on a standard container geometry. This allows any container capable truck to carry it, and allows simple drop off, by container capable trucks. Creating quick, simple, cheap fixed deployments.
The parliament in South Africa debated whether or not a $5 billion order, should go ahead because of Egyptian human rights abuses.The US provides Egypt with about $2 Billlion in imilitary aid a year . You would think if its good enough for the Americans , it should be good enough for anyone. It did not go ahead????!!!!!!!

I was saying earlier that South Africa should sell weapons to the Ukrainians, but looking at the $20 billion in US tax payers have given them we will never see re payment from them which is why the Israelis refuse to give them armaments. You have to be a idiot to give the Ukrainians weapons as they are cheap and want everything free.

Iron Dome and Umkhonto are two different system built for two different purposes. Umkhonto designed and built to intercept cruise missile, helicopter and aircraft. Iron Dome designed and built to intercept guided and unguided rockets, aircraft, cruise missile and aircraft.
