The MIM-104 Patriot is a surface-to-air missile SAM system, the primary of its kind used by the United States Army and several allied nations and one of the most advance technology till today
For a Patriot battery it cost a whooping One Billion Dollars (US$1 billion), while a single missile cost US$4 million.
Comparing to the S-400, a single battery mobile long-range surface-to-air missile system, costs approximately $500 million.
In this video we will look at how this system works in very basic form, we will also look at how the missile tracks and destroy its targets.

Good video. A small correction. The missile launcher you are showing is the PAC-2 GME which has 4 missile. The PAC 3 CRI launcher has a total of 16 missiles and the newest PAC 3 SME has 12 missiles per launcher. Launchers can also be configured to have all three missiles. For example: 1 PAC2GEM, 4 PAC3CRI and 6 PAC3SME.

very good explanation on video...Thanks. Patriot radar azimuth coverage 120° for target searcing mode and only 90° for target firing mode. So at least 240° of azimuth is free to send cruise missile to destroy Patriot radar. 1 battery needs 3 Radar for full coverage. Also, radar range is limited to detect low RCS targets such as drone emits noise jamming signals to blind and next coming enemy ordonance can harm Patriot's radar.

Based on David's Sling Stunner missiles that can reach up to 300km with Mach 7.5 terminal speed and has a dual seeker with active radar and infrared IF homing. Additionally US has a new launcher called Enduring Shield that can incorporate any missile including SkyCeptor.
With the upcoming IBCS (Integrated Air and Missile Defense Battle Command System) network for the US Army, any interceptor and/or launcher and/or radar can just be a lego block. Similar to US Navy’s Aegis system, its a centralized battle command center. Many systems can be connected including NASAMS and Enduring Shield, SHORAD, Patriot, MEADS, and THAAD. Even radars from other system like Aegis SPY-1/SPY-6 and F-35’s AN/APG-81 can also be used. This allows a different radar to use a different interceptor to engage a different target.
PAC-3 does not supersede PAC-2. PAC-3 is a 300kg missile to shoot down ballistic missiles at 50km range. PAC-2 is 900kg missile with 3 times the range of PAC-3.

You should have covered the topics of different missiles used for the system, at least including including PAC-2, PAC-2GEM, PAC-2GEM+, PAC-2GEM-C, PAC-2GEM-T, PAC-3, and PAC-3MSE. PAC-2 and PAC-3 has difference in destruction mechanism, target type, and range.

I can prove he is correct because I'm a former 14T Patriot missile crewmember from the US Army. You also have the wrong design for the AMG antenna array. It comes on single truck similar to the ECS. You can deploy a Patriot in under 15 minutes. I know because I used to reach minimal engagement in under 15 minutes back in the early 2000s. The PAC 2 (advanced) can actually carry 2 missiles per cannister making it 8 missiles per launcher. A Patriot battery can also use 16 Launchers.

I know some may not believe me but I actually worked on the trade studies and prototype testing of that propulsion control system towards the top of the missile that quickly changes the direction of the missile in flight when I was at Northrop Grumman. And it’s super cool to see that the concepts that my team and I modeled and did ballistics analysis for is actually implemented now into the missiles. It’s called the monolithic attitude control motor system

I am not sure why some would not believe you, I do. I had a small engineering part myself, in the original ALL (airborne laser lab). Plenty of engineers and scientists have been working in multiple weapons and other projects since the inception of modern warfare.

Вопрос только в том, насколько эти повреждения серьезные) Повреждениями они могут назвать и уничтожение несколько ПУ и РЛС, т.к. еще пару установок могли выжить и в целом весь комплекс ПВО в таком случае можно назвать только поврежденным. Кроме того, это не отменяет факта выпуска 32 ракет залпом (100+ млн), что свидетельствует об ошибке расчета траектории цели. Следовательно, сбить ракету она так и не смогла, в связи с чем комплекс и был поврежден

It's basically an oversized radio antenna. Used for communication to higher or other units.

4 days ago I’ve heard Patriot shot down “hypersonic” Kinzhal for the first time in history above my hometown Kyiv, it was Really loud
Its a rumor spread by Ukraine, There is no real evidence to support this claim and no one has confirmed it either.
Its very doubtful that this actualy happen, Considering that the Kinzhal is not a little faster then a missile fired by a patriot its much faster, By the time that the kinzhal is detected it will reach its target shortly after, There are undouble flukes to be had do to the angles the interception happens for example if the Kinzhal is on the trajectory of the Patriot, In any other case it simply lacks the speed to intercept it.

One piece of russian kinzhal-rocket fall down beside my home at the football stadium.
Best part about the patriot, if it cannot intercept the Dagger it has a failsafe that is throwing 5 launchers and a radar station on the way.
Another good point is that half the missiles fall on allied territory so you actually didn't spent U$ 150 million, just 70-80 and the rest can be recycled.

Could u guys cover how IFF works, particularly for MANPADs?
It probably just sends a signed message with a random nonce to the aircraft. If the signature is verified the aircraft responds with a signature of the random nonce. This signature is checked on the receiver, if it is correct the aircraft is identified as friendly..
The first check is required, as otherwise an enemy could ping an aircraft to get an radio emission from it, which can be used to target the aircraft.
I doubt there is a IFF system on MANPADs
However a MANPAD usually requires a line of sight meaning that you can tell the difference between your ...F16!? and the enemy ...Mig-29!? by just looking at it.
If both combatant use the same fighter you may want to use a very destinct color or marking to differentiate you from the enemy. Since longrange or fighter detection use IFF anyway a big yellow stripe on your fighter will not make a difference

Another correction, their is another vehicle in any patriot battery that while not essential for firing the missile, it is essential to the idea of an Integrated Air Defense System, the BCP. The BCP allows commanders to access Datalinks to see a wider picture of the battlespace and identify targets before they're acquired by the radar.

Very fine 3D job - thanks. The part mentioning it being 'most advanced system compared to S-400s' is an exaggeration, mildly speaking. MIM only has a 90° viewing angle compared to 360° of the Russian system. The target detection distances between the two can also be compared only to the detriment of Patriot. Sorry Patriots😢 but such is the truth 🤷🏿♂️

How far apart do they spread the individual components of the system to avoid damage?
I don't think they can be very far apart with all the wiring and UHF...it is very limited

The 4 amg antenna don’t continuously spin lol they can be toggled left or right but only so far. The amg never drives with the masts up, only stowed. And the sides have big batwing platforms. They are not on trailers. They are directly mounted on big truck beds.
The ecs has 3 manstations. The one behind the other 2 doesn’t have a crt screen. The other 2 have been upgraded to large touchscreens. And believe it or not, they now have 2 recaro racing seats lol. Good job on this video. Might want to mention the radars don’t have to continuously rotate due to triangulation.

Terminal flight guidance assembly would be directional and active. mid-course nav would be handled in a closed loop using GPS. that gets it to an approximate location without alerting the target because it has not directly detected it, it's only going off preliminary flight direction from the launch control radar.

The S-300P (territorial defence variant) indeed needs a lot more than 5 minutes. The S-300V (mobile, troop defence variant on tracked vehicles) actually needs 5 minutes at most, an expert crew can make it even faster.

First of all, there is no evidence that the entire system was destroyed. As it's clearly said in the video, Patriot consists of 6 independent and replaceable parts which cost around $1bn altogether. So hitting an empty launcher or a diesel turbine generator wouldn't result in an immediate loss of $1 bn. It's worse for radar/command station but not a $1 bn loss either.
Secondly, if it's damaged but not destroyed, it can be repaired fairly quickly. Then each saved civil infrastructure or strategic military object which could have been hit overweights the cost of replacing/repair plus warheads.

very good explanation on video...Thanks. Patriot radar azimuth coverage 120° for target searcing mode and only 90° for target firing mode. So at least 240° of azimuth is free to send cruise missile to destroy Patriot radar. 1 battery needs 3 Radar for full coverage. Also, radar range is limited to detect low RCS targets such as drone emits noise jamming signals to blind and next coming enemy ordonance can harm Patriot's radar.

@@mastermariner490 New radar has 3 panel antennas (not rotative). Main antenna surface is exactly same of today's. Other 2 new radar antenna are smaller than main panel. There is no fire control capability as main antenna has. Only to increase situational awarness to detecet drone, cruise missile and similar weapons. Last thing, newest GaN radar is not operative 100% in field of US Army and not to be exported.

There is a video showing Kinzhal being shot down by patriot launchers. There is no video of patriot being destroyed. Kyiv is still defended. Russia still can't land any attacks. If patriot was destroyed, why can't they attack from the air? Everyone (open source intelligence) reviewed all the satellite footage of the area attacked. They could not find any strikes or damage. Patriot has multiple launchers, command stations, and radar stations. 1 single launcher station was damaged after Russia launched its biggest attack it could muster. Pathetic.
