Thank you so much for all your excellent tutorials on paper quilling. I'm new to the craft and learning so much from your clear and detailed instructions and tips. Really appreciate them!

Do you make a certain number of coils ahead of time and if so how do you store the already made coils before you use them on a project? Or... do you make them as you put your project together?
Hi Deborah, I make them as I need them for my projects because it’s easier for storage, and because my projects tend to be small. If I were working on a larger project and required many of the same components (mandala, snowflake, decor), then I’d likely make many of them ahead of time so gluing to my final surface can be done in a block of time for efficiency. I hope that helps!
Could you please tell me the exact length of your paper you used. I have several lengths. Would like to keep my Vortex's small if possible since I'm using these to embellish my Woodturnings. What might be the shortest length that will work? Thanks
May I ask you a question since you have been doing this for a while now and are so experienced. How do you store your quilling strips? There must be a nifty way to keep them organized. For now I just have them separated by colors in gallon plastic bags. Thank you for taking the time to read my question, Charlotte
Are you a mind reader Charlotte? LOL this is going to be the topic of my next video. I have made a video about how I organize strips that I cut myself, but it’s ideal for thicker paper that is 11” long. For pre-cut strips, I have a new and improved version that I can’t wait to share. Until then, here is the other video I mentioned: th-cam.com/video/xj4VVeMIg3Q/w-d-xo.html
This is a wonderfully detailed tutorial on vortex coils and I thank you so much. You are "liked" by lots of us. How long are your paper strips, or at least, what is the diameter of the coil?
That's so sweet of you to say Pat - thank you for making my day! 😊 I'm so happy when I hear my tutorials are liked! In this video, I'm using conventional quilling strips, so I think they were about 24" long. For the circular vortex coil, I expanded it into a 5/8 inch or 16 mm circle template, but I just kind of played around with it until I saw what I liked. I find each brand of paper has its own personality, so it's not always a hard rule.
oops. to continue: Because my commercial strips vary between 11" and 16" and 23" , very little was working out for me. By the way, my 23" strips were purchased in about 1998, along with a little quilling tool!
Hi Sewittoday, thanks for asking. I got mine from Michaels but I haven’t seen it there in a long time. I found a similar one on Amazon (affiliate link) here: www.amazon.com/Darice-Ultrafine-Applicator-Bottle-20ml/dp/B007PYMXKO
Thanks for the great video - but I am having trouble with consistency! They don't seem to unwind, even at the beginning, as yours do, and the vortex aspect is sometimes not there! Any tips on what I might not be doing correctly? Tight coil or loose coil? The ends are getting pinched as much as I can! Help!
Hi Mauidelite, what happens if you allow the outermost ring to open up just a little more so the inner rings have more room to expand? I think once you do, the inner coils will unwind. If it still doesn’t work, send me a photo so I can see what you mean. My email is paperzeninfo (at) gmail.com
I only make it look "easy" because I've been doing this for over 10 years. I've always had a love for paper ever since I was a child. I see my mother-in-law handle fabric the same way I handle paper, but to me fabric feels like an untamed animal. We each have strengths and weaknesses, and as long as you don't let it deter you from enjoying this art, then you will get there. It is precisely because you see where to improve, that you WILL improve! It may be hard for you to believe, but I see soooooooo many improvements I need to make to my own work. Please know we are both on the same path - don't ever give up! It's too much fun! Thank you for taking the time to comment. You keep me inspired to keep going with them! :D Cecelia
My strip is about 24" long and 1/8" wide. Are you letting the outer coil open enough to allow the inner coils to expand? I'm not sure why your coil isn't expanding because so far mine have not had the same problem. I do use a mini screwdriver to help the coils open more and show that in the video. Have you tried that?
@@PaperZenCeceliaLouie Thank you! I tried it again and it worked out well! Thanks for the info on the glue bottle and other tools. I'm sort of new to youtube.... many thanks for your quick reply and help. Take care,

Hello Amitha, The paper I'm showing in this video is standard quilling paper by Lake City Crafts, 1/8 inch in width.
