- Join me on this exploration of Jeet Kune Do, a martial art that emphasizes personal growth, discipline, and the harmonization of mind, body, and spirit through rigorous training. It highlights Bruce Lee's comprehensive fitness program designed to build strength, flexibility, and endurance, essential for martial arts proficiency. This program includes a variety of exercises, such as alternate splits, push-ups, and high kicks, each serving a specific purpose in enhancing martial artistry, from improving agility to strengthening core muscles. Delves into supplementary training routines and power training through isometrics, aiming to boost cardiovascular health, flexibility, and explosive power. It stresses the importance of the on-guard position as a fundamental stance that enables swift, precise movements and effective defense techniques. It also touches on the mental aspects of martial arts, advocating for a state of readiness and adaptability. In essence, the video portrays Jeet Kune Do as not just a form of self-defense, but a comprehensive pathway to self-discovery, discipline, and mastery over one's physical and mental faculties, encapsulating Bruce Lee's philosophy of being like water-adaptable yet potent.

Movement is the essence of humanity. We were born to move. We only get old when we stop moving. Thanks for this wonderful look at my martial beginnings.
Absolutely, I'm glad you enjoyed it 😄
I did this stuff, off and on for over 50 years. At 73, I can still kick and
Punch with good speed and power. I do have to be careful though,
because of a pulled hamstring muscle, and a partially torn rotator
Cuff muscle. I've learned how to rehab myself. Doing well.
Thanks for the inspiration.
Thank you for sharing and leaving a comment 👍 50 years of training is no joke, keep doing what you can.
@@CalebCormacI am. And I feel good!

Learning from a book is one thing, but you do require a teacher in order to master it. Remember that Bruce Lee first had to study form in order to see what was 'useless' and what could be kept. To be truly formless, you must first have a form to begin with. A solid foundation. Then, once mastering the basics, push past in order to build what is uniquely your own.
Nope my friend read kungfu books for 5 years and study from them he was his own teacher and after 5 years he beat the living shit out 3 black belts.
You at it again br3an read Bruce Lee books at the year of 1973, Im glad people like you are realizing the incredible possibilities that anyone could learn.
Enjoying the journey so far. Thanks for sticking around and checking out my vids!
2 weeks of blood, sweat and tears but you produced authentic gold brother.

Great well done video on a Martial Arts Classic Tao of Jeet Kune Do-let this new generation KNOW how far ahead of the curve Bruce Lee’s training and philosophies was.

If people think they know JKD they are mistaken UNLESS learning from Bruce Lee or from his CLOSEST students like Ted Wong, , Dan Insanto or Jimmy Lee and FEW others! 🍀🍀🍀🍀🍀
Even Bruce Lee's son said jkd is different for everyone because jkd relies on the personality and unique expression of each individual.
Was looking for a video like this years ago thanks brother 👍🏽

The Tao is not a good book for a beginner to learn from, you'd be far better off studying the "Bruce Lee Fighting Method" books. And the "Chinatown Jeet Kune Do" books by Tim Tackett & Bob Bremer. The Tao will be of use to you when you've got down the basics & have a good solid foundation.
This video is great, lots of knowledge to comprehend, .

You're welcome 😊
your jkd looks good,i recommend, dan lok jkd.
Been doing martial arts for about 15 years now. Started in self study with JKD eventually moved on to mma with actual bouts in kickboxing and later boxing. Like you, Ive read every book ever produced on Lee, also including titles from his personal library from the likes of Edwin Haislet and the more obscure fencing manuals. Jkd equips you with a lot of tools that are useful for beginners (straight lead, parrys, 5 ways of attack, centerline theory, interception ect) especially the ability to self study. Its also worth mentioning the Oakland school and other "Branches" of JKD like Inosantos school and Ted Wongs(which I think really stuck with the core of his teachings.) One thing ill mention as a caveat here: JKD was meant to be ever evolving. Yes, it closely resembled kickboxing with a tiny bit of japanese jujutsu at the time of Lees death but Lee never encountered modern mma and JKD was a product of its time. I mean this to say that JKD has some problems that youll realize when you step into a competitive mma environment. Ill get the obvious ones out of the way first.
Grappling. If you want to practice JKD as a self defense art you are going to want to supplement it with a good grappling art. At base it has almost nothing of value as far as grappling and the stance only gives you the option of giving away single legs to shrimp out.
Muay Thai(my most trained and competed art) when you start doing hard sparring against even basic level Nak Muay you are going to regret having such a bladed stance, trust me.
"Good" boxing. Make sure you arent in a bad gym and are being challenged on your techniques. Aside from trapping hands, which, lets be real here you need to have a great teacher for it to even be that effective, JKD suffers in the short range. Make sure you take some boxing to learn more defensive moves up close or your philly shell esc defense is going to crumple when someone backs you against a wall or table.
Basically what im sayimg is that JKD can be a good jumping off point but dont get married to all the concepts. Its a martial art with weaknesses like any other and the sooner you can realize what those weaknesses are and fix them the better youll get as a result.
Awesome man thanks for the thoughtful comment! I do jiu jitsu and boxing and taekwondo as well, I'm experiencing JKD for the first time and what I appreciate most about it is not necessarily the fighting technique, but the philosophical depth and its ability to help me live a better life. Bruce Lees ideas on the expression of the martial artist really resonates with me. Over time, I plan on exploring every corner of martial arts and combat on thos channel!
@@CalebCormac good to see you already have a base to draw from. Good luck on your journey.
I don’t think you underhand real JKD. You can’t move past simplicity and directness.
Evolving to you and all mma people means “adding” which leads to more complexity, reaction lag time, slower response time.
A lot of guys did not get the full insight into what Bruce was doing.
Grappling, Bruce was well versed in it, knew it well. But it wasn’t something he necessarily taught or ever needed.
Boxing, Bruce was very well versed in boxing going back as far as 1959.
Muay Thai, Bruce saw it when he went to Thailand to make the big boss and he was not impressed.
Bruce’s notes:
“PRO 1. Elbows 2. Knees 3. Actual combat
CON 1. The punching is not of high caliber: the “left jab” is poor, the “uppercut” almost nonexistent, the “hook” is inadequate.
2. Gloves prevent the use of the finger jab and the palm smash
3. Lead foot attacks lacking: no shin/knee lead attack and groin attack
4. No grappling tactics
5. No “under the belt” tactics
6. Scientific economical structure is lacking. Plus lack of sophistication in cadence, timing, broken rhythm
7. No hair pulling or scratching"
Guys today aren’t doing anything “better” or more streamlined that what he did and could do.
Bruce’s approach is much more direct and efficient, with much better footwork and body mechanics.
I would like you to check out John Paul Daily channel. He is an instructor Tommy Carruthers, he recently made a live stream called “simplicity, directness - non classic” you should check it out. It’s very insightful.
“People fail to realize Bruce moved beyond technique. Once you understand the goal is to hit primary targets in the shortest time possible. All the fluff can be cut away. So you don't have to learn new techniques.
You find better safer direct and indirect ways to attack these points. The rest of your time is spent training your body to refine this process.” - John Paul Daily
Also, check out “Sifu Tommy Carruthers interview: Bruce Lee and Jeet Kune Do
JKD philosophy essentially means continuous self-improvement. It means not adhering to certain patterns. When I saw mma I did some research on it. There are artists who adapt this to today. Modern fighting techniques are already very complex, you can understand this from MMA. MMA has JKD in its essence, if you ask me. Also, Tomarda Miyahiro's modern kungfu works are a good example. It is also a much improved version of Hidro Watanabe and JKD Su Lee. The reality today is to master mixed martial arts. It was Bruce Lee who started this. It is to break away from the mold and develop simple and practical techniques. Lee's intuition is also very strong, and his philosophy also includes this.
@@MrSerler Bruce Lee spent believe in “mixing” arts. Boxing footwork is nothing like karate footwork as an example. It doesn’t work.!
Hey it seems like you have a very good
Understanding of Bruce lee and his
Martial Art keep learning and getting
Better peace bro.

@@CalebCormac Greetings and best wishes all the way from Bulgaria! Can't wait to see your next one!
@@emilkar3242 Bulgaria! Wow!
This wasn’t around the past 4 years I’ve been trying to research JKD. Well done! I’ve been searching for an in depth philosophical side of JKD. That would be much appreciated from you ❤
Glad it was helpful!
I wouldn’t go too deep into the philosophy of JKD. It is first and foremost a martial art meant to end a situation fast.
Too many people go down this path and lose sight of what JKD is.
Too much reading and thinking, not enough training and doing.
It has principles, body mechanics and footwork. If you want to know more about what JKD really is follow John Paul Daily and watch his most recent live steam, simplicity, directness - non classical. You will learn a lot. Also look into Thomas Marx JKD and Tommy Carruthers. Tommy is easily the most talented JKD guy around.
Great video! I like that Philly shell style guard. Do you do any sparring? Jeff Chan has some good sparring videos with JKD guys on his channel.
Yeah I spar, I'll check out his videos thanks!
You are very impressive young man. I am willing to join you on this journey. For a young man with a knee injury, this shows excellent strength, ability and capability. I am older now but I have to begin again. I have the hip replacement but it worries me, as I know its a weak point. Well done . Keep going dude
(Ireland)
Thanks, I appreciate that! I wish you the best of luck beginning again. This journey is all about self-discovery. I think that training alone should be in everyone's basic foundation. Age doesn't matter, I always say it's best to stay in your own lane and focus on your personal limits and obstacles. I feel my knee every day I train, and sometimes it's too sore for me to even walk. Cheers 🍻
@@CalebCormac I think I can help your sore knee Cormac. I myself have had terrible gout for years. They thought it was the drink. I tried cherries 🍒 for a month and it worked but came back. I was in agony and they had me on the steroids. Then about 3 weeks ago I went fruitarian. I had been vegan before and that didn't work either. But I found when I cut out the grains and wheat and dairy completely the gout hasn't come back. Not everyone wants to go fruitarian though. I still cheat a couple of times a week and I get away with it. If you are interested I am here. Good luck
@@CalebCormac oh you can go frugivore . That's what I meant to say. Like the chimps. So if you really want to you could take eggs or meat the odd time but not too much Cormac, the chimps only do that occasionally. Up to you . I hope this helps

@@CalebCormac I have the velvet book. What's fascinating to me, is the boxing mixed with fencing aspect of JKD. I'm not aware of any other unarmed fighting style, that incorporates a weapon based fighting art. Bruce was a brilliant martial artist. I appreciate your enthusiasm.
Jkd has principles but the goal is to make it your own. So there really isn't a secret to it only your own secrets to evolving it
@ryangmilam well said, this is how I think about it and it's how Lee wanted us to think about it. Even Brandon Lee said his jkd was different than his fathers

The beauty of jkd is his insisting that both sides be trained. As well as used in actual combat.
This is such a key factor removing it from traditional martial arts is why they went into decline.
After 40 years on this path I can't be convinced otherwise.
Good point, I'll be going over training both sides in the next vid
Interesting because in Taekwondo we always train both sides of the body for stances, footwork, punching, kicks, blocks. It is considered a switch foot style.
@MartialMatt yessir I been in and out of taekwondo forever but I had an extremely strict Korean master throughout my childhood and he made us drill both sides
@@martial_matt
While I know you're correct I haven't seen many that applies it during combat.
I've encountered some over the decades but most don't.
The reason the old way did that was training one to be ambidextrous in a sense.
Therefore taking advantage of the primary weakness of the human of favoring one side.
I'm ambidextrous so I've heard this more than once from instructors of many styles over the decades.
@@tonytomahawk5160 being capable with either side of the body is important but Taekwondo is also a system of exercise and health for longevity. Unbalanced muscles can result in injury.

Laaa e laaha ill lal laaw ( There's no God but the God) blessing for you
Firstly, this is a very well done video. Not sure if you have trained in JKD or are self taught? In any case, I commend your drive and eagerness to learn. As a (UK based) certified JKD instructor, I do want to comment on the defence section of this video. Blocking, whilst good to learn, is not desireable and should be a last resort. Firstly, a good defence is using good footwork and evasive manouvres including bobbing/weaving, slipping to avoid being hit in the first place, second comes parries , deflecting shots that you were a fraction to late to avoid entirely (or to aid when closing the gap in a simulateous parry and hit ), and lastly blocking (which can be painfull, requires more energy and takes longer to counter from). . If you want to talk more PM me. Good luck with the channel.
Knees.. got to mention kneesovertoesguy Ben Patric!
Of course I know Ben! I'm still integrating his exercises into my routine. Thanks!
Hi, can you please tell me what exercises bruce lee did in the gym or make a video about it
Sure thing!
Bro, I recommend you read Chinese gung fu: the philosophical art of self defense.
Awesome, I'll definitely dig into it.
Some are commenting with little research , after training in hong kong different martial arts he flee to USA where he also learned theirs and he combined techniques to come up with jeet kundo .the question he did not fight is , lack of research many sparring he did till he became master . joining Hollywood is not that easy first you must know martial arts
You are ready for the UFC 👍🏻
Haha maybe with enough support from you guys I'll go take the lightweight title.

Is there any video of Lee actually fighting somebody? And I don't mean practice sparring.
I don't tell anyone that I enjoy Martial arts.
Ok.
How much do we have to earn in order to afford dedicating enough time and space for JKD.
Anyone who cares enough can find the time.
If you have to work and kids to take care of?
@@CalebCormac spend more time and more money on it. You are doing good. Keep up with the good work. You'll be better than Bruce.
I think it’s really important to praise the fact that you’re dedicated to training and enthusiastic about JKD.
It’s a collection of his notes translated and interpreted by several people.
It was also written a long time ago and has refined a lot of mechanics since then. Read it, ponder, and look into the science of shaping kinetic energy. Those are the truths Bruce talks about that, while JKD definitely has a structure and training regimen, it goes into movement beyond the confines of “what punch/kick is in JKD.”
I’m a third generation instructor from Joel Ledlow who’s under Jerry Poteet , not trying to tell you anything other than suggesting to go beyond the book as it’s a mere reference.
Keep training! I can help you with your tornado kick sometime too. I’m formerly from cirque du soleil as a tricker.
Awesome, always down to pick up some new tricks, I've tried hard to learn tricking but I'm still just a beginner.
@@CalebCormac like anything it’s about fundamentals and transitions. You will draw a lot of other parallels with your movement experience
it is the bullshido way
JKD is NOT a martial art its a concept designed to fit the practitioner
There’s the philosophy of JKD which is take what works, drop what doesn’t. Then there is the actual martial art and fighting style in which resembles Bruce’s stance with a bladed stance and southpaw with your dominant hand in front. Jeet Kune Do- Way of the Intercepting Fist 🐉
Just gives it simplicity of description to what it is without overdoing explanation.
Jeet kun do is martial arts it's the way of intercepting fist or foot.....it's concept is Absorb what is useful, Discard what is not and add what is uniquely your own.. it keeps you fit but it's main purpose is fighting 💪
Should I workout like this I just wanna get more stanima and strenght I dont care about looks
