    This idea of using the first sessions to have focus on building relationship is something sooo important, I´ve been doing this and I see that its the base of what happens in the next sessions.

    This is the population I want to work with.
    There aren't enough resources out there for this age group and it's the hardest time of the lifespan. ❤

    Thank you so much for the tips. It is very reassuring to hear being yourself as a therapist is okay and works well. Had to go through my own process and it feels great to be my professional SELF!

    I absolutely appreciate you! I will be using tools from you on a regular basis! I am doing private counseling with teens in my area. I work for a couple of school systems as a Substitute Teacher. I was injured in my career as a Behavioral Specialist in 2017. I am no longer able to work a full time job in my field. I have been approached by several parents AND students for help. Although I cannot officially use this as gainful employment, I do help these families. I have a very strong connection with this population, (7th - 12th grade) and have known these kids for MANY years. I GET TO KNOW them, I present the same style as you have used in your videos. I appreciate you for all of your work! I will be a regular, keep doing this great work!

    I love this! I’d love to know how you guide the session with teens who come in not reluctant, but guarded. “I don’t know” “I’m good” type of responses, and claim to have nothing to talk about nor any interest in q&a rapport building activities.

    • @thegratefultherapist
      @thegratefultherapist  3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I have a few videos with ideas for activities. My #1 go to are my teen question cards. Link in description to the cards. My Mindset is to allow the teen the time they need to open up. I don't push. I will make art with them or talk about what they are interested in. If a teen in interested in video games, I will let them talk all about a subject they are interested in. After a few sessions, they will start to trust you and open up. Quenby

    What would be some strategies to use with a teen who answers “I don’t know” to every question but still says they want to come to therapy

    My Son wants me to be his therapist. I tried therapy for him many times for years. He had one therapist for over 5 years but he was young. He wouldn't open up. We were abused. We have trust issues.
    Therapists have helped me in amazing ways. I've had my therapists for a long time, until they retire.
    My longest for over 8 years. I am going back to school to become an LMHC.
    My e Son was not honest with the male therapists moreso than the female therapists.
    Based on who our abuser was. A male.
    The wait lists are 18+ months long here, as I am finding out its the same just about everywhere.
    We live in Massachusetts.
    I only wish we were closer to you, you could most likely get my clam of a kiddo to open up. ❤
    Thank you for this video, I feel less stressed about him getting the proper help.
    Could you do virtual therapy with us? LOL!
    I'm not sure that would work, based on health insurance guidelines...
    How do the new Facebook advertised "Betterhealth" etc, operate all over the US?
    I am thinking they are direct pay?

    • @thegratefultherapist
      @thegratefultherapist  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you for sharing this with us. Sending good healthy thoughts to you and your son. I have not used Better Health but I like the concept. I would keep trying to find the right fit in a therapist for your son. It does take trial and error and time. I know how hard that can be. And....if it is not the right time for our son yet, there is always down the road. Take CAre! Quenby

    Any ideas or thoughts re. Autistic teens? Our son is autistic and has a super hard time trusting new adults in his life. So the “building a rapport” part is sort of impossible, we find. Don’t think he even especially trusts us as his parents even.

    Whay if you work in a short-term facility what can I do to make the most of groups. I don't have time to build trust and repo ire unfortunately, so what do I do? I work in an acute care setting, and it is so hard because the kids have the right to refuse and many do. It's so discouraging. The facility focuses a lot on DBT. Do you have any links about DBT and the simplest way to understand this?

    • @thegratefultherapist
      @thegratefultherapist  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I am not trained in DBT so I can't help you there. You say you can't take time to build trust because it's short term. I would do every group like it's the 1st one then and use most of time building some trust. A group does not work without trust. Bottom Line. Period. Thank you for doing the good work in the world you are doing !

    Hi what great books would your recommend for a counselor who just started her career and wants to work with teens ❤️

    • @thegratefultherapist
      @thegratefultherapist  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Honestly I never read any books on working with teens. My best suggestion is to get an internship working with teens and be sure you have an excellent supervisor who can guide you. xo Quenby

    Thank you for these tips. How would you handle a resistant teen who is court mandated?

    • @thegratefultherapist
      @thegratefultherapist  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I don't happen to see those kids but what I would do personally is talk about directly about it. I would ask them if they wanted to be here? If they believed in therapy and if they thought it could help them at all. I would ask them what it was like to be "mandated" to do counseling. My hope it that these things would help them feel understood and like I know what position they are in. But you need to think of what would work for you as the counselor and your particular client. You described my grand daughter. How do we find one that works well with Teenager?

    • @thegratefultherapist
      @thegratefultherapist  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      How do you find a therapist? I would ask friends, and ask the school who they recommend. Then You can call the therapists and ask questions and get a feel for them. I always do the 1st session with the parents or guardians, so you can decide then if you think it is the right fit. You may have to try a few therapists before you find the right one. Thank you
