      1 guy, full engine, cross member, suspension out, strip, reassemble, back in - yep, 20 hours. Particularly when it’s an unfamiliar vehicle.
      Pity you don’t live in my neck of the woods. Nice work.

    I started driving in 1968 - 70's emission controls seemed so complicated at first - now I look under the hood of my 78 and 79 Camaros and they seem so simple. Great channel.

      eighthof8 I definitely am (17 hoping to learn about cars) I kinda am in a tough situation because my car makes the same sound and I’m still making payments on the car. I was thinking about engine swapping it and then selling it after I’m done making the payments but I don’t have a garage or a lot of tools to work on it, let alone a lift. Don’t really know what to do about the situation but I’m not giving up on working on cars

    • @scientist100
      @scientist100 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@devonharas9014 cars are fun to work on but you need to be persistent as all sort of vehicles with different problems will come and you have to set your mind to invest in diagnosing equipment and tools. So far I have around 15k in diag equipment alone, 3k on a pico scope along with sister oscilloscopes totalling around 1200. Dpnt be afraid to enter the world of electronics because that's the new thing coming. Any grease monkey can turn a wrench but not all will find hard to diagnose problems such as a jumped timing, misfire due to poor ground or computer supply fault of either.

    An absolute nightmare I’m doing a 2013 CTS and was committed to pulling out the top even though I have a car lift. You are absolutely correct what a nightmare pulling out the top. Zero tolerance available. I don’t know what the car manufacturers are thinking these days. I am now on the fence due to the availability of room I do think I’m going out the bottom now LOL. Rock on!

    Those Cadillacs especially 3.6 have problems with the oil pressure being low. Mine went out early would idle at 10-11 psi oil pressure an no check engine light or anything. Until.. at start up it’ll make a little clacking noise from the timing chain going out.

    • @tombob671
      @tombob671 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Colin Johnston no sir it was not their fault, however practically every repair on it is way to cokplex, my sympathy was for the mechanics not the foolish person who neglected to observe proper maintenance

    • @colinjohnston8519
      @colinjohnston8519 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes but the engine is expexted to last the lifetime of the car, and the only way to make it more accessible would be to increase the size of the engine bay and therefore the entire car. He stated this was an 05 so personally I'd have sent it to scrap as it's end of expected life span amyway. He has paid way more than it's value for not 1 but 2 replacement engines. But hey it's not my car so..
      Btw the mechanics are paid by the hour so it's not really a hardship. I'm sure he is grateful there is work to keep him busy.

    Is it better to do an engine swap or a rebuild? I have a 1991 ford escort station wagon. 5 speed stick shift with 340,000-ish miles that I just cannot part with for sentimental reasons.. It was overheated and makes whirring sounds like it has no compression so I assume just a head gasket wouldn't do it.... I wouldn't even know how much a rebuild or swap on a car like that would even cost.

    As far as I can tell, modern vehicles are hell to work on. Mainly there's no space under the hood. You either remove the cab on Ford pickups, or you remove 6 things to get to the broken one on most everything else. Then there's diagnosis via the ECM error codes, possible but very ugly. I watched one guy do that and I swear his job was more like debugging electronic hardware than wrenching on a car! Do you trace problems via the ECM output Amesie?
    Oh yeah, did you beat the flat rate hour estimate? That's how to make decent money on flat rate jobs.

      @@devonharas9014 yes, but it take one hell of a wiring job and a ton of hours.. Have to refab the motor mounts and install a whole new drive train. My buddy ls swapped his, it was about a 12k job with him doing all of the work.
