Ads interrupting this epic jam at multiple points, is exactly what the Dead would’ve wanted.
This guy has the essential artifacts but lacks the wisdom conveyed
El Cheapo Strikes Again
Phil’s bass in 1977 is thing of beauty.
❤️❤️
Jerry is so egoless and unpretentious. No phony affectations, no preening. It's a treat to watch a video of this prime 77 era.
It's cool, but he's no Robert Planet.
@@InService77 Or Trey, with all his goofy faces and swaying back and forth.
‘77 was THE year. Period.
And San Francisco was the place , pure and uncontaminated,
1972 Europe Tour highpoint for me.
Cornell grad here.. I swear they kidnapped me in the snow downtown Ithaca.. to your point I was at Barton so I know how magical it was. The hall itself lent it's wood to the tone.
But I'll b damned if giants stadium isn't like fuckin crazy good.. It was strange cause everyone may have had their chops tuned.. ck it my friend, vocals unbelievable. May have missed a few words but they were heating up for the Hall.
✌️
Imma. 68 Anthem Live/Dead fan but this live capture is magical. That was one decade. I left a bit after the Warner years but this is so great
Good Love now.
Everyone in the band was totally on here. Phil's bass lines are full of sublime surprises, Jerry's singing is as good as it ever got, everything is magical.
Jerry forgot the words "as I picked up my matches" in Scarlet Begonias, so what the fuck are you talking about: Jerry's singing is as good as it gets?
And he completely forgets the lyrics at times in Fire On the Mountain
@@tooturtletastic What's up with your hostility over something so non consequential? It's almost expected for him to mess up the verses to these songs and he's talking about what his voice is sounding like, and it does sound prime on this performance and the rest of the night.
I like what you did with the “sublime” surprises.
@A Al you try remembering all the lyrics with a head full of lsd...
The smile on Jerry's face makes this all worth while!
No lie- he's having so much fun- not so much in the '90's shows but the fat man still showed there were glimmers of his former self
Me too. .is one i prayed to. Cause at the time i needed a higher power. Thank you again, greatful dead. ❤️✌️🙏
Man, it's good to see Jerry smiling! This is 21 minutes of pure joy.
Old dead heads dont die we just pass it on....
This was my first year seeing the Dead live in concert. These were the best concerts ever, & I’ve been to many shows in my 70 years! 6 musicians and 10 hands playing and listening to each other and playing so tight and together it sounds like 1 musician with 2 hands.
My first show was Dylan & The Dead at JFK stadium in Philadelphia.
What an incredible spectacle
I’m glad I found this song brought me right back to my younger years got a love the grateful dead
My first show!
Mine too 🎉
I revisit this video every so often. I can never understand why it wasn't colorized!! Regardless, it's my favorite rendition of S.B. 🥰
Film cost. I was at this show.
@@kennethross3567 So fortunate!!! I was born and raised near Passaic, but by the time I was born, the Capitol was long gone.
Dunno. . . . maybe it's because I revisit/love this particular on so much, but I'm thinking that colorizing this would be the equivalent of colorizing Raging Bull. . . or even colorizing Casa Blanca. With love and respect. . . . leave it alone.
I’ve seen this before with just the Scarlet/Fire. The good love addition was a complete bonus.
What a freakin awesome cult!
I’m so glad that I had the experience of entering, exploring and finding my path beyond.
This is the epitomy of perfection personified in a pure way
Imagine not loving Dead music. Life would suck. Jerry is the grand master,, nobody comes close to him
So after a 92’ Las Vegas week, our driver crashed in the SUV on our way home. No casualties but we all f’ed up.
My dad wrote a nice heart felt letter to the band.
He received a letter from PR and a beautiful print with autographs.( Vince and Bruce)
Years later I accidentally left it behind in a rental.
A year later I came face to face with Jerry in a bar within a dream I was having. Man he was not happy with me.
A few months later while on my bike in Boulder co and on mushrooms I went back to that house.
I told the guy my story and left with the autographed print.
This was two years after his death.
Much respect for Jerry, here and there.
I love the bands energy and chemistry here so much
Cocaine is a helluva drug.
@@triplec6453such a tired statement. Drugs were with the dead from the beginning and it provided much inspiration. And that smile on the man's face. Get over it already.
Bill is such an incredible drummer it’s almost laughable
It's because he does it so casually, he's technically a jazz fusion drummer but doesn't seem at all aware of the fact. He could have played for Miles Davis if he was more aggressive and gave a good goddamn where the "1" was at but that wasn't his style. Nothing but respect for this man.
@@newusernamehere4772 completely agree with you, Jerry holds a massive chunk of what makes the dead special, but I really think Bill is right behind him. The backbone to their varying sounds over the years.
Mickey harts return to the band was not in their best interests....they gained power but lost maneuverability....just my opinion
@@joeshafer6806 It’s almost like the drums follow the guitar, not the other way around.
This is going to sound really odd in a reply to a Greatful Dead video, but in Metallica their drummer; Lars Ulrich, actually follows James Hatfield; who is their let’s say sledgehammer guitarist and lead vocalist in tempo.
Maybe it’s because they’re both SF based bands…
@@jackhaugh I learn something new every day! Thank you!
12:20 Jerry's face after he knows he just shook the core of so many souls
Can't thank you enough for recording this whoever you are. Was too young to be there. Would have missed it all if not for you. August 9 1995 was hell, ruined my whole decade when JG passed. RIP Jerry, Ron, Keith, Brent. Gave so much while you were here. Love ya for it. Still Grateful for the Dead.
So glad someone filmed this whole show. They sound so fucking good. Garcia is just rolling the sleeves up and firing a few off!
PBS donate now!
I’ve always loved the ska vibe on both songs. Jer bear sounds great - they were tight this whole show. It’s funny when Jerry messes up the lyrics - just carry on. Makes me happy when I see him smiling and digging it - grooving to it even; all that was understandably muted in the later years. RIP gentle captain.
"Hmhmhmhmhmhm I've been there before been there before"
Then check out if you haven’t sublimes awesome version
Euphoric Jerry , nothing like it
Just imagine how good it felt to play that music.
Seeing the Dead and Capitan Trips.. Priceless
My dad sent me this im not disappointed
..and alway..Bobby Weir. The best “rhythm” guitar player on the planet
“Rhythm”. Hardly
All the Capitol performances in B&W by whoever is posting are fantastic
Thank you all kindly for sharing
Capital had an in house video system
Lovin the Dead ☠️ in 2021, timeless tune ❤️❤️❤️🎸🎶✌️
tienes razón,
Y tienes buen gusto musical
hasta pronto Willi
I can always get wired when I relive nights like this! High energy with the help of Casy!
Love how funky this cut is. Phil’s absolutely SLAPPIN
I swear this video is a re-upload. I watched this the first time I took LSD during June of 2020. Jerry's head was blowing up like a balloon and Donna was getting all noodley when she was swaying, the PA also had a weird squiggly line of light that was dancing with the music. Badass night and great video
I went to almost every show on the West Coast in 88-89 so I heard a lot of classic tapes from the 70's. Audio tapes, so we couldn't see her groovy hips, but I can't tell you how everyone was always complaining about how this or that perfect recording was ruined because Donna opened her mouth. Worse than Yoko, because I don't think she was trying to sound weird, and it just destroyed the subtlety of some of Jerry's finest licks. Poor Keith.
10:48 Jerry launches into what is in my opinion his best solo ever! That smile on his face shows that for sure.
At that time no one had heard anything like it! Jerry was in the zone! 77 was a great year
awesome performance....jerry digs it
2:30 could play in my head all day !
One of the greatest of all time the whole band
This night watched "Le Grand Bal" - such unity
& in our summery seas going to dreamland with GD largeness ...
& gratefully
The way Jer belts out "playing" is my favorite part
So glad someone reuploaded this
This took me out of a 5 pm coma -- whole thing is fantastic. Bravo!
Favorite performance.
It's pure magic how they creep from Scarlet to Fire. So incredibly beautiful.
The bass is so damn groovy. On another level
🌹🎸Happy Birthday Jerry 🎸 🌹
🤙🏽 🍻
sometime they'll give a war and nobody will come, because everyone likes to listen to music and love peace.

Bill is great - Mick is no slouch especially in this period ,,
Scarlet…….Fire 🌹🔥
Travis Bean. Nice.
Phil's bringing the late 70's disco bass!
The drums and bass...ahhhhhh
Man I miss this
I was aware of the Dead before 1977. But only songs like Casey Jones and trucking. But once I heard terrapin station and saw the dead life in Milwaukee in February of 1978 I was hooked
Go back to Anthem
Facts
That was a great show
1977 was a great year for The Dead...they were Dialed-In
I love the dead I never saw them in concert
yes...a thing of beauty
Kreutzman was born 42 years old.
😂
That was so awesome it, was truly awesome
I had a copy of this from another channel. But it got suspended for some unknown reason. Glad I found this. It's possibly the best performance of this combination they ever did. And the camera work is superb.
Love the Black and white both GD and jgb Tucson Arizona Sonoran desert 🏜️🌵☮️🌞🐟 yes I 🍄🍄🍄🇺🇲🌍🔥
Jerry just tearing up on that Travis Bean. Amazing. I'm still in awe of his spirt.
cool shot of the spectrum anylizor device at the opening..... i was 25 in 1977, i remember ANY computer type screen showing ANYTHING was cutting edge dripping cool.....
Absolutely gorgeous
This is what I'm talking about! Epic!
12:16 jerrys face, it’s almost like someone on his right called his name, and he’s like “oh yeah, ya like that?”
Audio is very good, I'm surprised it's not in color because it's seems to be produced professionally (multiple cameras etc).
Saw some pundit say that 69-73 Garcia was Peak but even Phil has said anytime before the coma nobody in the band or on the planet could keep up with his changes and movements!
I go back and forth, but I might like this one better than Barton Hall.
God damn this is bliss
love love this so much, pure light and love peace too.❤️❤️❤️🩹❤️🩹
You know how they say he broke the mold no he was the mold
Legend

5-5-77 my fav
makes me want to "tune in, turn on and drop out" .
Me too🎉❤
Once in a while indeed
Fucking incredible that they go into a RASCALS song, of all bands. Long live The Dead.
Jerry always sings like he’s late for a paycheck.
Jerry in his prime just my opinion
OMG I WANNA CRY... I MISS THEM!!
PHIL Zone!!!❤.. damn that 9 finger kid can play..😮
Weir should've kept the beard around then.
Jerry in 77 seems to be the last year before he got really down the rabbit hole.
I love the guitar at 12.0 minutes
That wah wah or Mutron or whatever that is, nobody played that effect better
Only 24 but would love if an older person responded with true opinion on this. But even at this young age , I really appreciate the dead and feel a different and free type of vibe an mindset when I listen to them. I can’t call myself a dead head though even though I have numerous posters and albums just because i wasn’t there in the 70s to experience them , so I don’t wanna seem fake. Again though , someone older respond !! (My dads 60 and made me a dead head so I want opinions)
You are a true Dead head .....I can tell....My first show 72 to 95.... about 250 with Jerry
Garcia doesnt usually move much when playing, he's really frantic here.
77, 78 was the most movement...I saw him do a Chuck Berry "duck walk" in one of these years on Johnny B Goode
Check out video Duke U Us blues 1978....it's insane
Jerr looking good
The Jersey 'heads didn't look like they were having too much fun?
KALBOY LOVE GROWS LOVE❤❤❤🎉🎉🎉
@2:58 i think that guy in the tang top was in the Grateful dead move....
15:12 William “FairPlay” Kreutzman
Jerry hitting the lick at 7:34
Jerry playing the Travis Beam guitar , I think he only used it for one East coast tour with the Dead. He had started using it with Merle Saunders during the short hiatus period.
He played the Bean for 76 and most of 77 with the Dead. He’s playing the Bean for all of the classic Dead shows we love from 77.
For the record, his last show playing the Travis Bean in 77 was the great Englishtown show (9-3-77)
He played 2 Travis Bean guitars, in 1975 he was playing the TB1000A . I heard he laughed when he first saw it, you can hear the tonal differences if you listen to some of the Legion of Mary from spring of 75 really sharp and bright, he absolutely tore it up on that TB. In 76 he started playing the TB500 with single coil pickups and added some effects to it in 77’ you can hear that in the Dancin from Ithica (disco was alive!) that was a great era, Jerry on top off his playing and the tone of that aluminum neck beast of TB! Damn I’m gonna throw on some Scranton PA 75’ right now !...”Tough Mama, ..meat shakin on your bones”....🎸
And the sticker?
Ignore alien orders
Love the TB!
My favorite Dead years all have Linda and Keith in the band. I think Keith brought more of a Jazz not pop feel that later keys didnt.
🙌
🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🤣🙃😉
Donna always sang off key.
I wonder: Was that by design? So as to not overshadow Jerry or Bob? 🤔
Dork.
Travis Bean !
Donnas' voice is like sandpaper on skin. I always listen to them without her, much better.
Yeah, but she was easy on the eyes. 😊
I don’t get it, everyone else is spot on and she comes in with that yoko screech
@@aboutfaceretreats6562she couldn't hear herself over 80% of the time.
Waaaay before earplugs etc....
