Paint thinner is powerful but it makes your hands very cold, and it is expensive. I use gasoline because it cleans well and evaporates very quickly. Very interesting video. I finally found out the details of the cleaning rags, I was always curious about it.
Paint thinner makes your hands "cold" because it rapidly evaporates thus it doesn't leave anything behind since there is nothing else in it. Gasoline on the other hand has lots of addatives now days to help clean the engine so it will leave stuff behind and doesn't evaporate quickly (as in it can take hours or days)
🤨 ~ paraffin is one of the least “flammable” fuels as it doesn’t readily evaporate, in comparison to paint thinner & petrol which are both extremely flammable ⚠️🔥💥, and quickly evaporate; certainly there will be a risk of using those in a parts washer; of fumes building-up in a workshop
My “tapppy tap tap” screwdriver handle got so bad I had to use a large piece of shrink over the handle and it’s good as new now.😉 Thanks for taking us along, it can’t all be fun and games otherwise they wouldn’t call it work. Bottom line is a clean shop is a happy shop.✌🏼
Very satisfying haha. But one remark: We want you around for a long time, so: Use gloves. That stuff isn't good for you and getting in prolonged skin contact with it ain't good.
Paraffin is one of the most inert of fuels and doesn’t readily evaporate, you would certainly know if you splashed petrol on your hand as it would immediately evaporate off leaving that ‘cold’ sensation
We use in our ship a bio part washer „bio circle”. No one was able to stand kerosene, diesel or any thinner anymore. Wurth/berner part washers also not stinking.
I have this parts washer and it drove me mad with the little drain hole lol so I cleaned it out and welded a 2” pipe fitting with valve works fantastic now lol faster to clean when you have smaller hgv parts to clean lol thanks for showing dean all the best
So what I get from this is that we can tell the moment in the parts washer cleaning cycle by watching how dirty the screwdrivers are in any given video.
Hopefully Draper will take note and make that drain hole a little larger? Perhaps keep the drain valve as is, but include a larger bung to get rid of the sludge more easily!
Awesome video as always Dean. But I gotta ask, how many folks beside myself heard that file hit the floor and thought, now you'll be looking for it awhile longer!
I love kerosene, but it's a lot more expensive in the US than all our other fuels. For an 18L jug(5 gallons), it's $70US, which is over 63 euros. I can get bulk kerosene at the fuel pump, but it's $7 a gallon here, diesel is $3.50 at the moment. It is a hell of a cleaner!
Yeah people now days never clean the stuff they clean things with. Had a junker guy who came into our store, he had picked up a vaccum (Not a super expensive one but still almost a 200$ bagless new) and someone had thrown it out. He said it ran just fine so I took a look at it... Only thing wrong with it was it needed new filters. Still had the factory ones in there and they were clogged up with dirt and crud. for 14$ got 4 new sets of filters and that thing lived in the store for 4 more years cleaning our enterance mat (and we live in an area that heavily uses salt and sand in the winter) so that thing worked hard in those 4 years till someone maanged to break it sucking up entire loads of dirt, fine dirt and gravel from that mat (along with countless dust bunnies from under the displays)
Yes, diesel has a terrible odor. Standard kerosene is better but I strongly recommend deodorized (low odor) kerosene especially since you spend a lot if time in the fumes.
That was most likely coal oil, which is quite different from modern kerosene. The old coal oil wouldn't evaporate from the lamps the way the new stuff does.
I found myself grimacing when you were scraping the gunk off the shelf. Not a pleasant job. How often do you have to clean it out? Noticed your kero was red; the stuff we used in the kero heaters when I was a boy was blue. _I like smell of JetA1 in the morning, it smells like......flying._ 👍👍 *Thank you* for the video Dean.

Is the pump in yours the original one? We used to use Castrol cleaner through the one in the family shop for cleaning car bits and the pumps never lasted very long, not sure why. So no pump now, we just do a final rinse with brake cleaner.
It is. As its not carcinogenic, but long skin exposure does lead to tumours according to experts. Not to mention it does cause skin inflammation. Dean told many time that he should use PPE like gloves and what not. So its "do as I say not as I do".
I think you've done a good thing cleaning out your parts cleaner a clean Parts washer doesn't have any bearing on the mechanic and you seem to be an excellent mechanic but it looks more professional to the untrained eye
Dean when I go on to your home page it keeps saying this channel has no content !? I can find your videos under the video button but it means I can't binge watch. Any ideas
I don't know what's happening there. I'm trying to contact youtube to get it sorted out. Videos are there if you go yo videos, but not under my home page for some reason
the bucket is kept under the drain to catch anything that drips or leaks out. Sometimes things fall and land in the bucket. Obviously they don't go down the drain hole, its always closed anyway.
Make sure to wear gloves when using gasoline, kerosene, and the other harsh chemicals because they can really mess up your hands. Neat video to see the whole cleanup process though.
I like this video very interesting as never had one of these parts washers Could it be possible to make that hole bigger so it can drain quicker or what about a wet and dry vacuum suck up all that thick stuff at the bottom?
12:06 😂😮Now the wera screwdriver & paintbrushes didnt fit throug the drain so they must've been in the buchet before dumping kerosene.😅😂🛠️🔩🔧👍🏻👌🏻🛢️ ✊🏻🇺🇸🦅
Dean, better wear rubber gloves kerosene may result in dermatitis through the extraction of endogenous skin lipids. Kerrosene is not considered a direct-acting dermal carcinogen, chronic skin exposure may result in tumourigenesis (cell mutation). 😱
Thank you for sharing Mr Dean it was better than watching Emmerdale with the wife cheers
Glad you enjoyed it
Paint thinner is powerful but it makes your hands very cold, and it is expensive. I use gasoline because it cleans well and evaporates very quickly. Very interesting video. I finally found out the details of the cleaning rags, I was always curious about it.
I mean probably, but I feel like an open tank full of kerosene is an explosion hazard. Especially in a workshop.

@@samuelfellows6923 that's probably because paraffin is a solid at room temperature.

Indeed. All sorts of chemicals get absorbed into the blood and are deposited throughout the body, including the brain.
Wondering how he has such smooth skin on his hands. In all the videos I've seen there's no gloves.
My thoughts also

Lol... I thought the dog had used it as a chew toy!
Weirdly satisfying, and you found a few tools to boot! Thanks.

It's the little details like knowing exactly what part it was you left in there and what it belongs in!

Nice one Dean.
Isnt it toxic to handle kerozene like water?
in nz kerosine is 4.5x more expensive than diesel, so l always use diesel to clean up. the cost of kero skyrocketed in the 80s
Screw the parts washer! REPLACE THE NAILGUN TEST BOARD!

Now you nailed it.
Or if not that the 110v case with the cement in it for testing hammer action. It owes you nothing :)

Can you do a video where you replace the sump valve and spout with a 25 mm one? Bit of a design flaw there 😂
I think you need a bigger parts washer to clean your parts washer.
Yes, diesel has a terrible odor. Standard kerosene is better but I strongly recommend deodorized (low odor) kerosene especially since you spend a lot if time in the fumes.
There are so many uses for kerosene . My mother used to put it on our cuts and scrapes and kill bugs with it
That was most likely coal oil, which is quite different from modern kerosene. The old coal oil wouldn't evaporate from the lamps the way the new stuff does.
Dean prooving you might need a parts cleaner to clean your parts cleaner shelf.
Dean, my boy, has his parts washer small enough to keep in a filing cabinet when not in use it's pushed back out of the way.
fafty quad is a lot of money😊
Would a citrus or other specialist degreaser work better at degreasing and not have the problem of disposal or the smells or the fire risk be better
Should be wearing gloves when using keroscene or any other fuel or cleaning chemicals
Will the wee pump do hydraulic and engine oil

How many times have you forgotten to close the valve in the bottom before filling it up with new kerosene?
Think this is the first time I didn't forget.
The best Crack is when you forget to place the empty bucket back under the drain as well.

will the kerosene not poison you? curious
No but the oils disoved into the old stuff could be damaging
