Looking good mark,I’m currently doing a similar job on a well known signal yellow mk2 Mexico. Forgive me if I’m wrong but wasn’t the wheel tubs and chassis mostly painted “dove grey” I’m lucky to know if a couple original unrestored rs2000’s and there’s still some visible black e coat in the areas they missed with paint but a lot of the chassis legs and inner wings are covered with grey an then a dusting of body colour(overspray) I know these cars were painted by man so no two were the same
Hi, I’m just trying to copy what my car was like originally, some of it was still there under a layer of under seal. If you look back at one of my earlier videos, 11 I think, you can see what it looked like. Like you say the whole shell is electo coat then there is dove grey between the chassis rails, a bit dusty in places, then like a rubberised spray on seam sealer between the chassis rails and sills, also under the rear tubs and inner wings. I’ve only painted all these bits black cos I want the black to be visible here and there and I’ve been told that all places where parts are fitted to the shell should be masked up so the “electo coat” would be seen here too. So my next move is the rubbery stuff, not sure what product to use for that yet. Thanks Mark👍🏻
@@MarkEdwardsGenerally I think you have it right. My observations over the years basically tell me that the shell was painted with grey primer first by dipping. After that the body was painted in the colour and the Ford Semi Matt Black used for the sills on most models was taken past the sills to the chassis rails (Black and Midnight Blue I think were in body colour). The colour was finished off by a good dusting to under the wings and rear wheel arches after a form of rubber spray had been applied in many vulnerable places under the car. You are basically doing the same thing but in reverse. My memory of just how much rubberised spray there was under the wings is patchy, and patchy is how I remember it too, with nuts etc showing signs of being masked over during this process in the possible event of easy removal in the future. The original finished result appeared to rely on only a coat of primer to protect the middle section of the floor from rust, but of course this would never be seen by the average owner anyway. Where you did see under the wings and I think up to chassis rails appeared to have a quick rubberised spray and a good dusting of colour to finish off. Basically the protection under these cars was totally inadequate and is it any wonder why they rusted away so badly. This is from memory from over the years but I don't think I'm far off.
After reading all that, it seems UK Ford was very slack on the water sealing. Our Australia Escort was rubber sealed basically from headlight to taillight, even the tunnel got a fair slap of rubber stone chip. The inside front footwells and under the carpet, under the back seat also plus the occasional splat into the boot. I suppose our roads back then were 100yrs behind the world and lots of unsealed tracks !
You done all that good work , preparing underneath and spraying black , then spraying just middle of car, never seen that before, or is the car going to be beige? Doing a good standard of work tho.
@markbull923 , trying to replicate how it left the factory, the satin black is to look like the electro coating, not the body colour, then the grey/ beige is how it was before I started, if you look back a few videos to number 11, you’ll see it with the Shultz stuff cleaned off.

@@marty3469yep, remember this is made in Germany, all RSs were made at the Saarlouis factory, I’m sure UK cars were even worse 😂
Just wrong 😢
Don’t cry😁
