Merpos kipper in the thumbnail... the next Mar Armstrong 😂
Glad you noticed, you gotta copy what works😂 I’m gonna get me Dad down the shed for a bit of banter next😁
Had to laugh at leftie loosey 😂 what do you do for a job again? Nice to see an update Mark!
😂
Muck Fe that was tight
Rust😂
Leverage bar. Dose the trick well done.
Thanks sqwidink 😁
Always found a hammer and chisel gets the gland nuts undone
Or a blunt big screwdriver +hammer. I use a pipe wrench to get it started tho.
I was just making a meal of it😂
lol 😆
I half expected a finger nipping sequence doing the struts mate 🙈 getting there! Sealer looks factory 👀 another step forward 👍
Luckily no finger damage,I don’t like the sight of blood, especially my own😂
looking good now mate dont worry about the sealant that looks factory done, great episode once again and looking forward to the next one well done
Thanks Justin 👍🏻
Brilliant work, can’t wait to see the next instalment 👍
Thanks Wesley 😁
Must be great to see new solid panels go back on the old girl. Definitely saved that we car
It’s not saved yet, I need to do a lot more welding before we get to that point😁
@@MarkEdwards your progressing as they say.. Bite size chunks..
@MP-po6fj the problem is, the last time I bit a chunk off was 3 years ago😂 But it’s in the dry, so should still be ok next time I get on it👍🏻
I feel a binge coming on. Subscribed 😊
Thanks Mr. Biker 😁
Fairplay made a jig to do the job properly, bolts an nice bit of welding. Better than what's on it original. Tidy job buddy 🤝🏻
Thanks Chris😁
Great work mate 👍
Thanks 👍🏻👍🏻
Nice. 👌🏻. With the state of our roads, I would have welded washers over the TCA holes to stop elongation, but you know what you’re doing. 👍🏼
That’s a good idea, but don’t worry, by the time it hits the roads, they’ll all be fixed 😁
@@MarkEdwards 😂😂
did I understand this right, you made that up from scratch??
No, I. Replaced the base plate and a strengthening gusset. I show a bit of it in an old video. th-cam.com/video/DKy555JmH9c/w-d-xo.htmlsi=_OGWbgug6yjDXKPA
@@MarkEdwards cheers, watched it. I am looking for a retirement project myself.
@@tonyjones7372 , good luck with your search. This is going to turn into a retirement project at the rate I’m going 😁
I suspect that the second one is from a 2.0l capri as thay look very similar but the capri one is wider
No,it’s an RS escort crossmember, was just a bit wonky 👍🏻
Great work again, well recovered 👍
Thanks Wesley 👍🏻
Fords are complete rust buckets. These Kas had zero rust proofing.
I don’t think Ford are any worse than other manufacturers as a whole, but Ka’s definitely are😁
@@MarkEdwards Errr .......... Fords are seriously bad for rust. I inherited a 2007 Ka Mk1 from my old man tha he bought from new. Only 4.5k miles on the clock. Never used in winter, but underneath it was still dissolving before your eyes. Awful lack of rust protection. Compare it with my mother's Renault Clio 1.2 8v, 2005, same 3 dr like the KA, again bought from new, one owner, but now 120k miles on the clock used in all weathers but no rot on it anywhere. I service it. Properly. I drive Peugeots myself which have far superior rust protection and no rot on mine. British and Italian cars are the worst for rot. I had few Fiats and Lancias years ago and you could see them rust in front of your eyes, plus the electrics were terrible. Also German cars aren't that great either. You can see quite a few young corroded Mercs on the roads.
Another step forward mate 👍
Yep, thanks😁
That will stop on a sixpence
Let’s hope so😁
Fair play mate - lots of time and dedication in those callipers . I’ve done the same in the past with the rebuild kits from Bigg Red! But I haven’t got the patience anymore and just buy them refurbished 😂
Thanks Lee, that would be the sensible thing to do😁
@@MarkEdwardsI think I’m gonna fit wilwood upgrades to mine so I kinda get away with being lazy as it’s an upgrade - honest 😂😊
@leer798 😂
How many tubes of sealer did you use?
Hi Geoff, I used 20 tubes, 10 per side👍🏻
@@MarkEdwards thanks. Getting to that point with my rs turbo resto.
Yeah, I’ve seen the Mk3 and 4’s have a similar finish underneath, I’m not even sure this is the right stuff, but it looked close enough for me😁
@@MarkEdwards its the closest you'll get. 3m do a similar spray sealer but not in beige
Do you have a video for removing the front fender
No separate video sorry.
The video illustrates that there’s a fair bit of work involved to get it there. Good job
You’re right, got the same amount of work to do again when I get back on it too😁
I agree with the sunroof delete. If it wasn't there from factory shouldn't be there now. .. Difficult repair to be honest. But like your idea of sparying an actual top coat. Especially in black. This will show all the inperfections. .. Could try circling the individual flaws with chalk/crayon Then take a picture & use this as a guide to see were to focus the most work. .. Definitely improve the lighting. . Perhaps some lower light source closer & at 90°/parallel to the roof.? this will make it easier to see the flaws.. ...
Thanks Stuart, you’re right about the light, but I could also feel some of it, but I got fed up of filling and sanding 😁
Looks great Mark.......unable to see there had been one fitted. If the car was a different colour, going by what the other contributor said about cracking in the future, a vinyl roof may have helped but not on a black car 🥴 Can't wait for more vids 👌👏👏👏👏
Thanks Al😁
Jeasus what sunroof you wouldn’t know there was ever a sunroof in that car Brilliant job and brilliant videos
Thanks Damien😁
Not an easy thing to repair mate 🤔 especially in midnight blue! Personally I'd of skinned it... Be interesting to see the final outcome 👍
Yep, you could be right, except it’s black😁
@@MarkEdwards ohhh is it, my eyes mate sorry 🙈🤦♂️ having said that black's even worse! I've got the same job to do on a fwd RS2000, my plan is to cut up another roof skin, joggle around the edge and panel bond it in 🤔 although mine's red and it's a rally car! Good luck with it mate, you'll get there 👍
😂
Thanks, in hindsight I probably could have gone down your route, or welded it a lot less and sealed it inside and out🤷♂️
I think it needs more sanding by the looks it's too high over the repair. Did you step/joggle the new panel as that would've helped, also use a guide coat to show highs and lows . Getting there mate, 👍
As I said, this is not the finished article, I could feel by hand the highs and lows at this point, but just wanted to see what it looked like 👍🏻
Fair play mark, you're a grafter. I did work experience at dane motors in mold and saw an 18 year old putting a sunroof in a brand new vw using a jigsaw. Apparently they used to sell the cut out to paint manufacturers to colour match😮
Thanks Wayne, an 18year old with a jigsaw😂 Remember, this is all your fault, the car, not the sun roof😁
Getting there mark, you need a longer block, I used a flexi block and it follows the curves on the roof, my roof was battered super straight now, Gavin pink has some great blocks take a look, try to use epoxy primer as well it will help with any micro blistering in the future 👍
Thanks😁
Might have done better using panel bond as this stuff is so strong but no distortion thru welding maybe put a vinyl roof on as a lot of these had them
Yes, sticking it on may have been better, I hoped to get less distortion, but even little welds shrink back😬
I did the same thing last year on a fiesta, removing factory sunroof that had rusted all the way round, got it looking pretty good, but with the amount of filler because of the distortion, started cracking after a year, ended up fitting carbon roof, If I did it again I think I would get a piece wheeled & bond in with structural adhesive. I feel ashamed I used to break these RS's up for parts in the 80's & 90's but back then they weren't worth anything. Still a good job, black gloss takes no prisoners.😀
Good info thanks👍🏻
comming together now mark looking good
Thanks Justin
Well done Mark you wouldn’t have known it had a sunroof What should you do next....put some black around the holes on the wheel rims
Thanks Billy, but as for the wheel rims, RS and Mexico rims don’t have the black bits😁
Your not far away with the repair, and I’m sure you will get it better, however it’s very difficult to have a repair like that to be 100% perfect, and it’s down to whether you can live with it. Personally I would have skinned it, but you’ve went so far with it I’d see it through now and see how it turns out after another block down and gloss guide coat. If all else fails….vinyl 😀
Thanks, you speak sense😁
Would rather see as much as the original steel kept in place as possible , there's far to many Magnum mongrals about ..
Thanks, I like this way of thinking, , but I can’t fully endorse it, as I fitted Magnum inner wings😂
Great work Mark,one day.......
Thanks, one day at a time😁
Nicely done! We never got these steels on the OZ RS 2000s which look great, we got more a cortina style steel wheel you showed in the video. Alloy options were 13 x 5.5 Volante wheels which aren't as cool as the RS 4 spokes the UK got
Thanks Si, I like the look of them too, good to see the different specs from Aus though👍🏻
@@MarkEdwards yours look so good, how wide are they?
@@si_fictionRS2 they are 5.5, it’s the offset that makes them😁
@@MarkEdwards ahh cool, def looks better
Looks like new mate!! 👏👏 One step closer 👍
Thanks😁
Looking good Mark don’t forget to paint behind the dashboard
Thanks. Do you mean the bulkhead?
@@MarkEdwards yes sorry all behind their is potential rust traps thankfully I did mine a while back
@@billywhizz98 that’s next, seal up and paint, I did the dash first because I can mask it up easier 👍🏻
getting there Mark, it’ll be a cracker when it’s finished 👌👍
Looking great, are you prepping and painting it yourself or going to a body shop for the final coat of paint… next summer should be done 😅
I’m doing it myself, if I’m not happy, I’ll do it again 😁recurring 😂
Fair play, I think you’ve put so much graft in, I would personally finish the prep get it nice and straight and get in a spray booth that will show your hard work off !! I prepped my mk1 and painted the bay etc looked great but there’s to much dirt flying around for the top coat 🤞
@@roccoPuopolo-z2i , yep, dirt is the problem, I’ve got a bit of a plan for that😁 I painted my brown 4 door a few years back, have a look at that video😁
Another step closer.......looking mint 👏👏👏
Thanks Al😁
Not criticism but please put a mask on while sanding great job by the way👍
Thanks, I can’t argue 😁
Excellent work once again 👍
Thanks 😁
Great stuff!
Thankyou 👍🏻👍🏻
Nice.......bet you enjoyed putting that back on 👌👍
I did, all it’s ID back on now 😁
Fabulous work Merps 👌
Thanks Al😁
Nice work 🤝🏻
Thanks Chris😁
Been following this just revisited 😂 Any advice on where to get a seam sealer gun from?
I can’t help you, cos I’ve just looked where I got mine from and the price has tripled 😱 There are probably cheaper alternatives that do exactly the same job, but I haven’t tried them🤷♂️
@@MarkEdwards Ok cheers mate great progress on the RS it's going to be a belter👍
@@leeevans4635 Thanks, let’s hope you’re right 😁
Edging closer to calling derek up or maybe this level of waftin Silverstones
It’ll just be Charlie and Jack by the time this goes😁
Spot on mate, awesome attention to detail 👌👍
Thanks 😁
