One thing I never really noticed until after all these years was the lack of dialogue for the last few minutes. None was needed - the entire story was told, and this was a beautiful, wordless way to tie it all together. I still get chills from that last shot.
This is true. This was the best of all star wars endings. Made me forgive even the lowpoint of the entire saga - the ewok fight. Overall a great movie and a bombastic finale to a great trilogy.
@@Сайтамен Thats so sick bacause that means nobody really had to know before that they were family idk if it was like that but the han solo reaction made me think the actor found out for the first time there just as his character did.
When I was a kid seeing young Anakin was cool. But now as a married grown man with children, this hits different. The expression of old Anakin reflects everything that happened since his redemption process started until it finished. I would also have that expression of love and admiration to my children if I'd be watching them from the other side, because I know my dad do the same with me. He watches me and knows tha im doing my best with those I love.
If I passed tomorrow and later on appeared as a Force Ghost to my nieces I'd rather appear in a form that they'd all recognize their Uncle Nessie right away. Not as a twenty something who they would not recognize. If I had a choice I'd appear to them at the age I am now and not as I did at the age of 17.
Sebastian Stan’s performance as Anakin in this scene is amazing. The pride and love he managed to express without any words and only a few seconds of screen time was perfect
Oliver Crosby those original 6 are classics and have gone down in history. I don’t know why people bash on them. The music, fighting and plot was amazing. Yeah the story telling could have been better but it made for great memes do you know how awesome it was to see Vader being born in 2005 it was amazing I was shocked and very few movies have done that to me if any in my lifetime. Star Wars will always be my favourite. Those 6 movies are the accepted true Star Wars along with clone wars. everything else is fake. I like the games too
This original ending was more plausible for me because when they defeated the emperor and destroyed the death star nobody outside of Endor knew about it. The rumor of what had happened still had to be spread in the galaxy, so the victory party was limited to this small and primitive location. A small group of friends and allies celebrating the great victory. This is the true ending for me.
What I love about this version of the ending to the trilogy is how humble and intimate it feels. The franchise started out small, with Luke living on a remote, rinky-dink planet. It’s why we related to him. Then, the story got so big and grandiose. The rebellion prevails. But then, we return to a tiny village with little tribal creatures having a fire-side celebration with our heroes, who are embracing and smiling. The film didn’t have to explicitly state “this small group of friends saved the giant galaxy, which is full of millions of people celebrating,” but rather you felt it in the performance and atmosphere of the scene, especially with the choir coming in at the end. You knew LOTS of cities must be celebrating this way, but the film chose to focus instead on our humble main characters. It just feels like a more fitting conclusion, even if the special edition version of this scene is more emotional.
That's well put. The original films didn't really concern themselves with the bigger political backdrop; you hear about the Empire and the Senate, but they aren't part of the action. From beginning to end the OG films were really about friends sticking up for one another, and this ending captures that.
That's exactly how i feel with the original ending. let me add something more to that: Luke looks fulfilled. He's there, celebrating with his friends, and at the same time, in that moment, he knows that his father was saved, and he chooses to keep that joy to himself. his journey is complete, and, as you said, there's nothing more beautiful that this is happening in an intimate celebration.
when i watched the edited version, i was so confused as to how they got hayden christensen there but now i understand lol having an older anakin makes much more sense especially since obi-wan is old
The only problem with Sebastian Shaw is that for his age would've been more appropriate as a grandfather. But as an actor was much better than Hayden Christensen and also a better casting choice for being the father of Luke and Leia.
@@DarioNeodi Sebastian still made more sense as their father, assuming both Luke and Leia are around 20 year old which totally make sense for Anakin to look that old. Hayden's Anakin looks like he's just the same age as Luke and Leia which made it more awkward.
I love both endings & I get why Lucas added the Hayden ending, because it symbolizes that time period when Anakin was truly good and with the Light Side of The Force before Palpatine corrupted him. But to me, this ending just makes more sense. One, he recognizes the father that he knew personally & it shows that even Old Anakin can be redeemed. Besides, the "Young Anakin" version looks a tiny bit out of place.
@@iamjayrts25 "he’s a 40 year old man played by an 83 year old man" Palpatine is an 83 year old man played by an actor who wasn't yet 40. Yet that character LOOKED every day of those 80 years. Anakin, by contract, doesn't have a face shriveled like a prune. He doesn't look any older than Obi-Wan.
I watched Star Wars sometimes when I was younger, and I found the scene where you can see Darth Vader's face disturbing for some reason. Now, at the age of 23 I decided to rewatch the whole thing, even the prequels, and I started crying when Luke removed Anakin's helmet so they can look at each other at least once, face to face, father to son. I legit cried. That's because I feel very caring and protective of my family, especially about MY old father, who is 62 now, and I know he won't be there forever. And later on, in this scene, when Anakin's ghost appears, I also couldn't hold it. It's so beatiful that his spirit found peace, in his last moment he did the right thing which made him a Jedi again, and the look he has on his face as he looks upon the two of them, the emotion... A face of a loving and proud father.
Thank you. From a very young age, I grew up without my father and Return of the Jedi brought me peace I did not have before. To edit or revise this scene is disgusting and Lucas should be ashamed.
IT happened the same to me. I was so touched by how Darth Vader forgets everything he earned and all his sacrifices in order to have power and even his own life just to save his own son. If that's is not moving as the maximum expression of father's love and life redemption... I don't know what else can be.
Micah Olson What they’re saying is from a show on Disney+ called the Mandalorian. The mandalorians have a saying for their members among the guild which is “This is the way. You’re thinking about “Do you know the way” which is said by Ugandan Knuckles.
Mark Hamill for me is the best actor in the entire original trilogy, such a genuine believable hero. He and Ian McDermid (Palpatine) really steal the show on both ends of the spectrum of good and evil.
I dunno how and why they chose a 35-ish-years-old actor to play the wrinkled decrepit Emperor, whether it was long-term planning and insight or he was just the right man at the right time, however I thank George Lucas every single day for giving us Ian McDiarmid as Palpatine. The guy almost single-handedly saved the new trilogy and was a BLAST in the old one. He even managed to make that catastrophic Last Jedi almost barely watchable. What a legend, what a true king among men.
@@fitzhugh7463 Obi-Wan explicitly stated that Darth Vader was "a young Jedi" before he turned to the dark side in A New Hope. Plus, Obi-Wan is supposed to be only 60 in ANH (and Alec Guinness was 58 at the time). Meaning his apprentice would have to be considerably younger than him, but old enough to be Luke's father. So Lucas really had no choice but to depict Anakin as a teenager/young adult in the prequels. Therefore it was a mistake to cast Sebastian Shaw as Anakin.
Why would it. Star wars fans complain to much, both are good in my opinion! I don't understand why putting so much time to complain about such a small change
What saddens me the most when watching this scene is how the Sequel Trilogy made the Jedi and Rebel Alliance's most momentous victory against the Sith and the Galactic Empire mean absolutely nothing in the long run.
Meh, considering there WAS a Sequel Trilogy, that was inevitable. Remember the Legends canon, with Palpatine coming back as a Force ghost over and over, and the Sun-crushers, and Jacen Solo turning to the Dark Side? Disney is just following in those authors' footsteps.
Just don't watch the sequels and prequels and frequels and shitquels. Thats the kinda poison that's killing cinema as an art form.. I for one think of the originals as the only Star Wars there is, the rest is non-relevant (to me).
keefriff99 Hitler became undead zombie that orchestrated 3 World War and made clone puppets to lead his armies and blowed capitals of Free World with his Superweapon. But it is okay because horses defeated him.
i love how as the entire galaxy celebrates the victory against the empire, Luke mourns his fathers passing and honors him with a small yet poignant funeral in the forest.
Vader became Anakin again in the last few minutes of his life saving Luke and talking to him. And Anakin's Force ghost looking like an old man still makes sense within the larger continuity of the saga (he's 46 years old when he died) because the Dark Side as well as his injuries aged him quickly, similar to how the harsh climate of Tatooine aged Obi-Wan's face
Anakin’s allegiance to the dark side is exactly what killed Anakin. I take the force ghost as more like the idea of what Christians have on the concept of heavenly bodies. If anything Sebastian Shaw, a man who’s age was 78 at the time of this film, is very out of place for a 40 year old character who is rejuvenated by the force ghost. As Star Wars archivists have said this despecialized edition is a Frankenstein’s monster in editing. Quite a feat but to get the “originals” ever again is a wish no one will see come true.
Bueno también porque George Lucas, cambio la historia, haciendo a Anakin Skywalker más joven , se suponía que Obi wan lo conoció siendo por lo menos un adolescente no un niño de 11 . Así era la historia de Star wars en esos años.
I love so much the original ending. By replacing Anakin face, Lucas didn't only change the way we perceive Anakin's redemption, he also broke the symbolism behind the last two shots of its masterpiece trilogy. The penultimate shot of the movie shows 3 old men, now ghosts, looking at a younger generation who saved the galaxy from a distant point of view, with a smile of relief. It looks like an old family picture. It looks like wisdom. And then we cut to the last shot, the younger generation. They are celebrating with friends, not only smiling but laughing, in a closer shot while everyone is dancing around. They are somehow looking at themselves, their victory, their hopes, like a family picture too, but the one who has everything to build. Not a shot of wisdom but happiness. I understand the editing with Hayden Christensen, but putting a young face in the penultimate shot broke this old/young balance which carried so much in the first place...
@@sameurlynda4274 You do realize that he's the same person, right? You don't become a different person because you choose to drink franch instead of water one day..
And contrary to the theory, this made perfect sense as he was how he looked when Luke saw him just with some hair and the scars gone. And the hair being there and the scars being gone symbolized his return to the light side and him being healed from his time on the Darkside.
@@RavenNo.5 Yeah I don’t wanna see whiny baby Anakin’s ghost. It’s more satisfying to see him as a wise old man like Obi Wan and Yoda. Plus how else would Luke recognize him?
I think until the early 2000s, it was good to grow up because when smartphones and computers really took over, the quality of life just went to absolute shit! These kids today...are utterly clueless!
By changing the Anakin actor, I believe Lucas did something unintentionally. He changed the tone of Vader's redemption. The point wasn't to change Vader back into who he had been, as though everything he had done just went away. It was to find the light that existed within Vader, and to bring it out. Luke didn't turn back time, he redeemed Vader. "You were right about me". The light existed within Anakin, while he was Vader. Luke brought it out. The original ending wasn't to show Anakin as he could have been if he had never fallen. It showed who Anakin was, having gone through what he had gone through, and still in the end returning to the light. The new ending is as though Luke brought Anakin back to life from the moment that Vader "killed" Anakin. The old ending is as though Anakin had never died, but only Luke was capable of seeing that.
The Younger Anakin represented who he truly was in the first place. That's how Anakin sees himself. During what he felt was his *peak* in his life. Darth Vader/Anakin hated who he became, a cold monster in a hunk of metal. Overall, Younger Anakin makes more sense than Older Anakin and is more satisfying for those who genuinely enjoyed the Prequels & Originals.
@@UnknownUser-gd3ls To me at least though, the ghosts aren't how they see themselves but rather how their spirit is (thats why he had his limbs back: it was him as he could have been, rather than him stuck in the past). After all, I doubt Anakin is the only one who would want a younger body.
I think Hayden being there cements the whole "Anakin always was somewhere in Vader" much more. The last time Anakin saw himself as Anakin was in his younger form. That part of him would've been stuck deep inside his being while Vader did all those atrocities and Luke bringing Anakin out from that darkness would be like pulling that version of Anakin back into the limelight. Conclusively he would look like a young Hayden because what was preserved of Anakin inside Vader was a young Hayden appearance wise. Did I bring that across properly? Sometimes my stream of consciousness makes for weird sentences.
Cause this had a chance of being the end to the whole franchise if George decided not to do the prequels, IX isn't the end or a conclusion, the story will continue and the saga will live on in future movies and shows, what would be the point of having another ending like this if the story isn't over?
@@jarodcito you see you have something like Star Wars that has no ending and then you have a David Lynch show that questions the agony of our characters being brought back to even have any semblance of a return or an end in Twin Peaks. When I watch the Star Wars 7-9 I can’t help but feel bothered by the actual idea that the characters we’ve seen for years have still stayed in the same circumstances since their youth. Wallowing in constant warfare and smuggling. It’s honestly depressing to know the fate of those same heroes from this film and their eventual fate being characters who will never see comfort. Just turmoil.
Nemo 2003, No, you are not the only one who cries. I prefer the special edition music over Yub Nub. That was a welcome change from the original. At first, I didn't care for replacing Shaw with Christiansen, but. I understand why this was done. It ties the last of the original trilogy to the prequels for the generation that never saw the original versions of the original trilogy. However, I would have preferred they left Shaw in and just changed Yub Nub out. How about just not having the Ewoks?
Yea but Yub Nub completely undercuts the emotional weight of the journey. Literally kills the tone of the end. The Special Edition Victory music is leagues better in matching the end of the end. It's such a bitter sweet song that evokes a sense of reflection of all the hardships that led to this moment of victory and redemption. Which is the entire point of the Hero's Journey. Yub Nub does not have that effect. It's a completely nonsensical song that only distracts from what should be a very emotional scene. The scenes from the galaxy help tie the prequels in more and gives the galaxy more depth by showing a wider impact to the Rebel's victory but having Hayden at the end should never have occurred. It doesn't make sense and distracts because we know it is out of place. At least that's my take.
@@angerami77 Only according to the prequels.. thats an issue with the prequels and not the OT. Obi-wan is clearly not the 50 that the prequels would lead you to believe...
@@angerami77 He's 70 because the original movie says so. I can play that game to. You totally dodged my point about obi-wan. Obi-wan is clearly not 50 in ANH. This is an issue with the prequels.
Perfect ending. The late Sebastian Shaw with his size and bulk was much more convincing than Hayden Christensen for this scene. Changing the music and showing galactic celebrations wasn't a bad thing, but the rest should have been left as it was.
Classic Galactica Many probably didn’t notice it, but the other part of the new ending that I liked was Luke hugging Wedge. It’s only for a second, but I mean Wedge was the only other known rebel fighter to survive all three movies, and he played crucial roles in destroying both Death Stars. It’s nice to see him getting appreciated, and given how short it is, it doesn’t change anything else. Definitely could do without the “wesa free” though.
Oh yes. SO convincing for a 70-year-old actor to play a character who's supposed to be younger than Obi-Wan. And it's really hard to see Anakin as an elderly overweight man.
This one has so much more symbolism and beauty, especially the old Anakin smiling to his former jedi master and then to his son, with his wounds healed. 😢
eagleone08 Even after over a week I still feel so much better re-watching this after the Rise of Skywalker. This and A New Hope are the only Star Wars movies that are still very good and not overrated like the rest of them. Before you get mad at me, The Empire Strikes Back is pretty good too.
It works best if you think of the new films as separate so this ending is perfect for the 6 movies. And if you're also interested in finding out what happens after, you can watch them if you want to.
I kind of like this ending better than the young Anakin one, for many reasons 1. It makes sense for Anakin to appear old to show how he conquered Vader. Vader didn't kill Anakin at Movie III. He just made Anakin dormant until he returned in Episode VI. You could say Hayden's Anakin was the true Anakin since he was the purest form, but it gives the impression to me Anakin died then and there, but he lived to see Vader fall 2. Here Anakin's assuring look at his son and apology to Obi Wan shows his regret and happiness. I felt like Hayden's one was happy for a minute and got all serious. In addition he's just looking into space and later has his head raised. It doesn't give the same loving, vibrant feeling Anakin had. It makes it more like Anakin is still serious.
But Sebastian straight up looks nothing like Anakin. He's too old and has no facial features that look like him. Like there are probably some Black guys that would be a better pick.
@@NoName-hg6cc you’re not listening or understanding I’m saying that was his last “Appearance” and vision of him being a true jedi so therefore his younger imagine created the force to have that appearance of Anakin.

I definitely like the original ending better. The song/Ewok celbration is legendary. The Disney+ version shows celbrations in other places that looked like scenes from EP. I and II. And was that Jar Jar who said "wesa free"?. Like c'mon. Some things just don't need to be touched. This was one of them.
It's so enjoyable when someone who has never seen / or forgot the original ROTJ see this ending ^_^ Obi acknowledging older Anakin redeemed for saving Luke is so terrific, young Anakin looks menacing. And the original Ewok music fits perfectly ... like it was made to! ^_-

The original ending I will always remember as a 7 yr old watching this in 1983 in the theatre. Cried like a baby, happiest ending ever. As a kid it was great. I can see how some saw this as corny cause of the over sappiness.
You can find and download the Despecialized versions in their entirety if you do a simple search. Legally, all you need is to own physical copies of the original trilogy and never buy or sell the Despecialized versions. They are a joy to watch. They're perfect. :)
I think this is greatest ending scene to a movie. Everyone is so happy and celebrating! It’s so refreshing because every ending scene now is so depressing even the ones that are supposed to make you feel good.
Abigail Plageman I’m glad you really like them, but to me personally I just really feel like they were only made to make money & not add a new great trilogy of movies to this amazing saga. I get the business is to make money, but it’s also about making art & telling stories. There was no plan at all & it all felt very half arsed to me. It could’ve been as good as the original trilogy I think, but the execution was just terrible in my opinion. For the record I do quite enjoy TFA, but TLJ for me just destroyed so many great ideas & shat on the character of Luke Skywalker in some aspects. TROS is just a mess of a film & felt like it had no creative ideas at all. You try to watch this trilogy & they just have no cohesion at all. If you really like this sequel trilogy that’s awesome & I’m happy you do, but these are just the reasons it doesn’t work for me.
ironmatto3 Yeah Lucas didn’t plan out everything, but I’m sure he had an idea for where he wanted to take the characters. The problem with having 3 directors for a trilogy of movies & they are given creative freedom, is they may ruin plans for what the next director wants to do. If the 3 directors just sat down & talked about where each of them want to take the characters & the story, I think we could’ve had a much more cohesive story.
@@ryan.smith01 Dude the OT had no plan at all. Leia being Luke's sister and Vader being his father wasn't even thought of until ESB. A New Hope was originally just called "Star Wars" because it was going to just be one movie, then Lucas decided to make two more afterwards. That's why ANH has no setup for ESB, because it wasn't planned to be a trilogy at first. The OT isn't bad but I think people definitely over-exaggerate how good it is. There are a ton of story errors or just plain bad storytelling, and the acting can be awful at times, especially in ANH. One of the worst culprits is the Death Star II. It's like Lucas went "Oh by the way here's this fucking huge battle station that went completely undetected and unmentioned to literally everyone until just now, even though they saw the first one coming from a mile away. And also I couldn't be assed to think of any original ideas for a new big bad superweapon so it's literally the exact same thing as the one from ANH, enjoy. Oh and one last thing literally all of the light saber duels in this trilogy are boring as hell. We hype these guys up as badass wizards with laser swords and you think their battles are going to be awesome, but literally all of them just look like two elderly people whacking at each other with their canes. Enjoy!"
The new ending score isn't the worst change they did, but I still prefer this one. It's so warm and charming, and I like that they don't cut away from Luke and Leia's hug at 1:32 to focus on much less important characters, like they do in the new one.
Contrary to most, I actually like the music used when the Anakin's force ghost shows up. Also, this version is SO MUCH better than the version with Hayden in it. Not because Hayden is a bad actor, but because it doesn't make sense. Darth Vader reformed...To show YOUNG Anakin who was corrupted and just YOUNG ANAKIN doesn't make ANY sense..
I love the way the music transitions from tribal to cinematic score because it switches from celebration to catharsis. It gives the feeling that you’ll never see these characters again but the fight of their lives is over and they can rest now.
I can understand Lucas's reason for altering the ending and it is reasonable, but I still prefer the ending with Sebastian Shaw. When he materializes and looks upon Luke and Leia with a smile, you can see how at peace Anakin truly is.
no, the altered version makes no fucking sense... Why does Anakin get to be his young self, while Obi- Wan and are their old selfes? Also Luke only knows the old Anakin. Fuck the special editions.
Yeah. Luke can see Anakin, Yoda and Obi-Wan but I don't think Leia can, at least not yet, but I think she knows what he's looking at. Luke can see them because he's been trained in the force. It was originally intended that Luke would train Leia in the ways of the force as well. Eventually, she too would be able to see Anakin. As Yoda told Luke, through the force you will see those long gone.
@@alexanderpytko5394 Once I read Backkeirstarmer's post, it took me a moment to think "what do you mean he died young? The same guy was old as heck when his mask came off." Bottom line, the altered version indeed ONLY makes sense if you have seen the prequels; otherwise it would have been best left alone especially since Sebastian Shaw (that's the actor who played Vader unmasked) get some social cheddar since he (unlike Alec Guinness) loved his role in Return of The Jedi and, on top, used all his Shakespearian expertise to portray a broken father and a redeemed hero. Rubbing him out of cinematic history is a great dis-service to the man.

Thank you for putting this up - I just introduced someone new to Star Wars, and it was really nice to be able to show them the REAL ending to the series!
I think the new ending totally disregards the older generation that grew up watching the original ending, including the Yub Yub song. While I understand why they changed the celebration and music, it doesn’t hit well as this one and I just straight up thinks it’s wack!
I'm not even that opposed to having Hayden Christensen appear there, from a sheer continuity stand point, just wish they would have aged him up to fit the time frame. That being said, still love this ending.
So much better to hear the fully-resolved ending of the force theme, without a bunch of noisy CGI to interrupt it, Add some more wood to that fire, Luke, lest some brooding goth finds the remnant of that helmet someday!

The last words in the trilogy: He is my brother.
This is true. This was the best of all star wars endings. Made me forgive even the lowpoint of the entire saga - the ewok fight. Overall a great movie and a bombastic finale to a great trilogy.

Agreed, you feel the pride in Anakin's eyes staring at his children who chose good over evil.

@Obi-Wan Kenobi Ummm... no. Canon says those mosquito guys from AOTC built the death star. They're nowhere to be found in Rogue One.
That is true, but according to The mandalorian s2 the explosion of the second death star was live streamed or something

@@sebastianlecourt1366 Exactly!
Yes. Character development over gratuitous world building...something Lucas completely flip flopped on with the prequels.
Great analysis why the original ending had the far bigger emotional impact!

I love both endings & I get why Lucas added the Hayden ending, because it symbolizes that time period when Anakin was truly good and with the Light Side of The Force before Palpatine corrupted him.
Jack Raiden your comment is pure gold.
Thank you. From a very young age, I grew up without my father and Return of the Jedi brought me peace I did not have before. To edit or revise this scene is disgusting and Lucas should be ashamed.

Honestly one of the only film endings to legitimately bring me to tears.
It's such a perfect way to conclude the story and help bring things full circle.
What saddens me the most when watching this scene is how the Sequel Trilogy made the Jedi and Rebel Alliance's most momentous victory against the Sith and the Galactic Empire mean absolutely nothing in the long run.
The Admiral
Not necessarily. Wars happen repeatedly. Evil rises and falls. Was WWII pointless because there were other wars and evils that followed?
Meh, considering there WAS a Sequel Trilogy, that was inevitable. Remember the Legends canon, with Palpatine coming back as a Force ghost over and over, and the Sun-crushers, and Jacen Solo turning to the Dark Side? Disney is just following in those authors' footsteps.
Just don't watch the sequels and prequels and frequels and shitquels. Thats the kinda poison that's killing cinema as an art form.. I for one think of the originals as the only Star Wars there is, the rest is non-relevant (to me).

i love how as the entire galaxy celebrates the victory against the empire, Luke mourns his fathers passing and honors him with a small yet poignant funeral in the forest.

You know, I'm fine without seeing CGI versions of the galaxy celebrating. A simple firework show over Endor is just fine, thanks.

I kind of like this ending better than the young Anakin one, for many reasons
1. It makes sense for Anakin to appear old to show how he conquered Vader. Vader didn't kill Anakin at Movie III. He just made Anakin dormant until he returned in Episode VI. You could say Hayden's Anakin was the true Anakin since he was the purest form, but it gives the impression to me Anakin died then and there, but he lived to see Vader fall
Nah it makes more sense for his younger self to appear because that was his last appearance of him being a Jedi so it makes more sense

@@xaypox Again, no, the movie title is "Return of the Jedi" meaning he returns as a Jedi as an ADULT. It wasn't Vader who died in Luke arms, it was Anakin. It wouldn't make sense to have the younger him
I definitely like the original ending better. The song/Ewok celbration is legendary. The Disney+ version shows celbrations in other places that looked like scenes from EP. I and II. And was that Jar Jar who said "wesa free"?. Like c'mon. Some things just don't need to be touched. This was one of them.
😂😂😂
I hate the new ending. This one is so much more emotional
It's not the "Disney +" version, it was added in the 2011 Special Edition. Don't blame Disney for everything.
@@Laiseryou are correct that it wasn't Disney but actually it was edited into the 1997 Special Editions of the original trilogy. 👍👍
What is ep
It's so enjoyable when someone who has never seen / or forgot the original ROTJ see this ending ^_^ Obi acknowledging older Anakin redeemed for saving Luke is so terrific, young Anakin looks menacing. And the original Ewok music fits perfectly ... like it was made to! ^_-
Rest in peace, James Earl Jones
And... that's where Luke Skywalker's, every Skywalker, story ends for me.
Samson Crosswood the last Jedi completely destroyed Luke’s character!
This need to tear down old heroes to build up new, lame heroes is ... well, lazy writing with more than a splash of agenda.
JJ Abrams: Guys, I have an amazing idea for the new Star Wars trilogy. We take the original, widely loved characters, like Luke Skywalker and Han Solo........AND KILL THEM OFF TO MAKE ROOM FOR A WOMAN AND A BLACK DUDE!!
Employee:.....That’s a horrible idea
JJ Abrams: TOO LATE!!
That's where Star Wars ends for me
No it doesn’t neck beard
The original ending I will always remember as a 7 yr old watching this in 1983 in the theatre. Cried like a baby, happiest ending ever. As a kid it was great. I can see how some saw this as corny cause of the over sappiness.
I wasn't even born back then. But remember seeing the originals on television in the 90s and really enjoying the ending.
+Adddam It was just the perfect happy ending, everything wrapped up nice & neatly.
Every time I rewatch Return of the Jedi I pause it and come here to watch the REAL ending. Thanks for uploading:)
@Karsten stop
You can find and download the Despecialized versions in their entirety if you do a simple search. Legally, all you need is to own physical copies of the original trilogy and never buy or sell the Despecialized versions. They are a joy to watch. They're perfect. :)

@@AyanKhan-og3sd exactly
I think this is greatest ending scene to a movie. Everyone is so happy and celebrating! It’s so refreshing because every ending scene now is so depressing even the ones that are supposed to make you feel good.
The real ending of a true star wars movie.
I dunno, I really love Star Wars but I Also think the new movies are pretty good. Not as good as the if’s but still great
Abigail Plageman I’m glad you really like them, but to me personally I just really feel like they were only made to make money & not add a new great trilogy of movies to this amazing saga.
@@ryan.smith01 Don't speak about plans when the OT didn't have one either lmao.
ironmatto3 Yeah Lucas didn’t plan out everything, but I’m sure he had an idea for where he wanted to take the characters.
Enjoy!"
This will always be the real end of Star Wars. And perfect ending.
Agreed
+1
The new ending score isn't the worst change they did, but I still prefer this one. It's so warm and charming, and I like that they don't cut away from Luke and Leia's hug at 1:32 to focus on much less important characters, like they do in the new one.
In my opinion I like both of the endings, I don't get why people make such a big deal about it
They not only shortened their hug, they shortened Luke gazing at his father, Obi Wan and Yoda in the special editions.
Weird changes.
@nikolai 1939 love Luke and Han's hug and Lando and Chewy's hug
Plus they edit away from Luke winking at the ghosts.
@@DarkCharmedFeminity exactly.
Thanks for giving me the best childhood ever. What an age to grow up in.
Lol 46 isn't old (Vader/Anakins age at death)
It does make sense because that's when Anakin died as a Jedi, like Sith lord version isn't gonna be what his force ghost looks like lol
@@Tabth3778 But Anakin returned when he saved his son, so he died as a Jedi.
@@Ratchet2431 I guess, I like both endings though
I love the way the music transitions from tribal to cinematic score because it switches from celebration to catharsis.
It gives the feeling that you’ll never see these characters again but the fight of their lives is over and they can rest now.
This is the one and only ending to 'Return of the Jedi'.
Thank You James Earl Jones Long Live The King Rest In Peace 🙏🏼
Yeah
I can understand Lucas's reason for altering the ending and it is reasonable, but I still prefer the ending with Sebastian Shaw. When he materializes and looks upon Luke and Leia with a smile, you can see how at peace Anakin truly is.
no, the altered version makes no fucking sense... Why does Anakin get to be his young self, while Obi- Wan and are their old selfes? Also Luke only knows the old Anakin. Fuck the special editions.
@LennonH i like that explanation
@LennonH He died as Anakin Skywalker and Anakin was old when he died.
The greatest ending ever in the best trilogy in all of filmhistory.
Its treason then
@Guishe nobody asked
The Despecialized crew are doing God's work.
There is no crew, only one man: Peter Harmy works on rn.
It's good to see the original ending for a change. Thanks
It struck me as being mean spirited to remove Sabastian Shaw from the ending. His role was so small to begin with. Ditto with Clive Revel in Empire.
Clearly you're correct because I'm not even sure who the second person is as I've probably seen the special edition too many times at this point, who else did they take out?
@@Heartshapedbox81 Clive Revel played the Emperor in the hologram in TESB before Ian McDiarmid was cast for ROTJ. In the special edition, Lucas replaced Revel's hologram with new footage shot of McDiarmid.
@@dreamlandnightmare I'm honestly extremely glad they didn't use Revel in ROTJ. Ian just had so much more presence and brought so much to the role that I really dont think Revel was capable of. Not to mention that they made Revel's emperor look like a freak of nature.
@@kingamer123 I should correct the information I gave earlier. Revill only provided the voice of the Emperor. The holographic image of the Emperor was actually played by Marjorie Eaton, a woman.
I agree that Ian McDiarmid was much better casting. That said, I still don't like when they go back and try to "fix" these continuity issues in previous films.
@@dreamlandnightmare Well I for one, do. I generally think the special editions are better, there can be a few things that don't work (dinosaur in front of the camera, Jabba in ANH and Jedi Rocks for me) but I think they are mostly improvements.

See, that's how Return of the Jedi is supposed to end!

Rip James Earl Jones. They need an edit to include the voice 😢
I will never understand how George could watch this and hate it so much that he had to change everything about it.
It’s friggen perfect.
It's obvious he has an OCD when it comes to Star Wars, I'm surprised he never butchered Indiana Jones OT the way he butchered the Star Wars OT by having the swordsman in Raiders pull a gun on indy at the last second, just so it wouldn't look like indy was a "Cold blooded killer".
I wish he either would have done the Sequel trilogy a lot earlier or just left it all alone together. I think everything that came after the Trilogy just paled to me. But hey, people can enjoy that stuff and there is nothing wrong with that at all. I just stick with the OG because that is where the real magic of Star Wars is.
He did it with the prequel trilogy
Thank you for putting this up - I just introduced someone new to Star Wars, and it was really nice to be able to show them the REAL ending to the series!
I don’t think this ending could be improved upon. The music, Anakin, it all hit perfect in a way the new ending does not.
