That I think, would've brought it full circle.
I see the point. But I disagree. Keeping Alec Guinness as Kenobi’s force ghost I think conjures up an image of a Jedi Master who mentored BOTH father and son
Why? Why would we need Ewan? Hayden is here because that’s who he was before he fell to the dark side, a bittersweet reminder of who he was before and what his fall did to him, and shows a return to the light
The original ending was a proper finale of a beloved trilogy, but the 2011 ending was the finale of an era, tieing together a deeper and more meaningful story
2011 is just stupid and baffled me for the years. Such big system as Galactic Empire can't rely on just one man. And doesn't desintegrates instantly the moment he dies. I just see it - the whole war machine on Coruscant, enermous police force brutalising population heard the news of death and everybody like: ok, moving to a next thing... Don't care. And why in the name of all they're celebrating on Tatooine? Isn't it supposed to be on outer rim, where law doesn't work and cities consist of scum and villainy und such? Dear god, so stupid ending
The 2011 version showing prequel locations like Naboo and Coruscant really ties up both trilogies as a whole. Thank you George Lucas for creating such an amazing story.
When the actors hug on the set you can feel that it's more than just acting. You feel the legitimate love and friendship the actors share for each other.
2011 version seems to be the favorite. It ties everything from episodes 1 through 6 nicely and serves as a poignant reminder that we never needed an episode 7. This is the Star Wars I want to remember, not what it has become.
The mistake was not to make a new trilogy but to decide that this trilogy should be part of the "Skywalker Saga". Why not just tell a whole new story about the Old Republic or High Republic? All the Sith Wars or Hyperspace War would be a great setting for a new trilogy. But no, they wanted to continue a finished story instead.
Regardless of the version, what a great ending to the saga. I hope they don't screw it up someday by making some lackluster sequels that undo all of this.
@@Ramzi1944 3:55 It is a bit earlier: far in the background when the camera stops panning after the fall of the Statue of the Emperor. Look for the spires on the building.
This actually made me tear up a bit. I miss how Star Wars used to feel, being reminded that the sequels exist honestly just hurts. The Disney Empire just will just take quantity over quality and all we have now are some dull Disney + shows.
Rebels, andor, the mandalorian, tales of the jedi, the final season of the clone wars, rogue one, the bad batch, altough it is easy to hate on disney they have released some of the best sw content ever.
Yep. A new Star Wars film used to be an event, now the franchise is just too diluted which has killed its lustre. I have to say though, The Phantom Menace is just as good as the original 3 films to me. It was the last great one though.

There's always the expanded universe. Though it is too bad THAT ended with the Hand of Thrawn Duology. (Because wouldn't it be stupid to have the galaxy invaded by edgelord [Ess Emm] aliens or Han and Leia's son turn to evil?)
2011 ending gets me everytime. I can't just help but drop some tears. Really. The tender music, these little bear-like creatudes dancing with all their innocence, soldiers dancing and Luke, victorious, watching his masters and his redeemed father looking at him proudly. Just beautiful.
My dream ending would be 2011 with Sebastian Shaw in it. His benevolent fatherly look on his twins always gives me chills. A thing I desired so much since my father died before I saw RotJ.
You don't have to "dream" about it. That version exists, it's the 1997 Star Wars Trilogy Special Editions one. Though I don't know if it's still easily available, given that it's basically been superseded by the 2004 Star Wars Trilogy DVD version (which is essentially the same as the 2011 Blu-Ray release shown in this video).
I love both endings, 1983 ending is a more cultural-esque ceremony for the Ewoks, their celebration, then there is Sebastian Shaw standing there, we get to see how Anakin looked like without his burns and scars, and in his Jedi ceremonial robes, the 2011 version on the other hand, shows the whole Galaxy celebrating the fall of the Empire, the song has more meaning and is more melancholical, a true way to end a trilogy and give us a sense of a happy ending, then there's Hayden Christensen, showing that Anakin truly died when he killed Mace Windu, but then returned (thus being Return of the Jedi) when he, as the Chosen One, killed both Darth Vader and Darth Sidious, i hope he's finally reunited with Padmé in the Force Afterlife and they're both happy with eachother.
This is an interesting side note but I absolutely love that Wedge was included in the celebration montage of both endings. Wedge is by far one of the most underrated Star Wars heroes, he was arguably just as important to blowing up the second Death Star as Lando Calrissian and Nien Numb were.
@@drlca6601ok, if so tell me one thing. Is Wedge Antiless or Antilles is the same person as captain Antilles (or Antiless). The R2D2's and C3PO's new master? From RotS's ending?
No handshake between Luke and Han. Straight to a hug. Also I know people get upset that the Hayden anakin is used at the end. But people who watch 1-6 for the first time in that order love it. My wife literally cried seeing younger Anakin redeemed and returned to his former self. Beautiful stuff. 2011 ending is way better.
I haven’t seen the original in years!! I’m old enough to remember watching Star Wars in ‘77 as a schoolboy. The ending, although kinda low key always felt satisfying to me. I think people of my age actually thought this was the end!!
Who cared ? Anakin Skywalker's seduction, into the Darkside of The Force, never tasted appealing. However, Ben 'Obi-Wan" Kenobi was of greater interest to me. What made him "The Only One"?⁷
The celebration music change as well as adding Bespin, Tattooine & Coruscant were added in the 1997 Special Edition while adding Naboo & replacing Sebastian Shaw with Hayden Christensen as Anakin's Force Ghost were added into the 2004 DVD.
@@waltuh2.3bviews3secondsago3 Coruscant was added into the 1997 Star Wars Trilogy Special Edition & has been in every upgrade since. Naboo on the other hand was added into the 2004 DVD set. Episode I was in development at the time in 1997 while Episode III was being worked on when the middle/original trilogy was being released to DVD. It's been a hot minute, but I think Coruscant was also a setting (or at least mentioned) in the book, Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire (1996), which is only in Legends canon & not Disney canon.
@@jesusfrancoHe actually knows bc between ep 5 and 6 it was revealed that Luke had read Obi Wan's book, and that book contained basically all the information that he needed, as well as Anakin previous physical aspect
@@jesusfrancoAre you saying that Anakin’s force ghost shouldn’t be Hayden Christensen because Luke never knew what he looked like? Because I hope you know how little sense that makes.
Obviously the 2011 there’s a lot more incredible “art” going on but what I really like is how Hayden appears cause after what we’ve seen (now) in 1-3, he’s the Anakin we’ve all grown to love… or hate. But love the fact that Luke can look upon his bad ass “good” father finally.
The only thing that didn’t make sense was the planets celebrating. The Death Star was gone, but the Empire was still large and had a tight grip on the galaxy. Still was more heart felt and felt like a celebration moment, in which they won, and felt right
The addition of more sound in the 2011 version does a subtle job but adds so much camaraderie, you can practically feel it. Instead of just silence and music, you can hear Han and Lando laughing as they embrace; Chewie's roars are louder and crisper, even a few of the extra hugs can have their slaps and pats heard, and during almost all of it, you can hear the whole cast's laughter and chatter in the background. You can hear the happiness of the people and characters we've come to know and love, and that makes the scene feel so much better.
When I was a kid we had the special editions on VHS and for the longest time I thought that was the original ending music in ROTJ. I finally saw the original version on tv when I was like 15 and thought I was crazy for remembering it differently.
I prefer the 2011 version. It showed that it wasnt just the Rebels at endor celebrsting, but many worlds The Coruscant one is excellent, showing that the empire is truly over, and a new republic is bor I also liked Haydens appearnce more than Sebastian's. It fits better. But i think itd be more better if when he looked down, he changes to Hayden, to show that Anakin is truly back
The 2011 ending is really great, save for Anakin looking to his left when he should be looking to his right. Seems he was not well directed in that scene.
When Hayden first appears it's perfect, he's looking straight at Luke, as Sebastian did (minute 2:06 and 5:20). But it is how Christensen looks to somewhere else (minute 5:27) that I still don't like. Do you notice that his eyes are fixed at a different place?
lol at how all the zoomers trying to make the prequels seem good all of a sudden. Can't wait for the next generation to praise 1-9 when the next trilogy happens.
@@The_RedVIII Haha, nobody who really likes Starwars actually had a fulfilling emotional experience watching 7-9. 1-6 is best, always…great story arc overall. Sequels story was a total mess

I get goosebumps during the 2011 ending when i see the jedi temple in the background and than I see Anakin's force ghost. It really sends a message that people can be redeemed and deserve a second chance whether it is in life or death.
@@ernestojr.valenzuela4062it wasn’t that much better. The only reason less people complain about it is because not many were aware of that comic series where it happened, and plus palpatine coming back in legends was merely brief and didn’t effect the overall story that much.
I love the 2011 version more cuz the music is more touching for an ending, the scenes of all the galaxy celebrating the fall of emperor Palpatine's tyrany are perfect, they help to conect with everything that we've seen till this point and having Episode III Anakin as a force ghost goes better with it since this was the way he look right before he got tainted by the dark side.
Two things about 1983 that I like better: The Song and the fact that Vader is the face that Luke knew (nothing against Hayden Christensen). I do like the added celebration scenes from 2011.
There's a lot more interaction between Luke and Leia in the 1983 version, more beautiful, stronger and emotional. The way they look to each other and hold each other 😍
Julian Shipp Jr He’s probably about to be executed which might explain the fact that there is someone willhem screaming at 3:55 because he was a stormtrooper and he was thrown down Coruscant
The main change was in 1997 for the 20th anniversary. This was the version I grew up with and is my favourite because it has the new John Williams music which I love and feel so much more epic than the Yub Nub. But it also has Sebastian Shaw as Anakin Skywalker which, in my opinion, is how Anakin's force ghost should look like
Same! I really do think that was an intentional nod to the famous Reichstag photo when the Soviets brought an end to the war. Lucas also had lots of respect for Soviet cinema.
@@revolutionariesoffreedom2374 That's true, this is also one main reason why the Russian revolution and communists world wide have adapted that symbol later. In any case, it represented freedom and liberation.
My Dad who passed away about two months ago wasn't a big star wars fan, but he loved the music. His favorite one was the Victory Celebration theme. Now I can't help but think of him every time I listen to it. Edit: Omg I forgot I even made this comment. Thank you all so much for your kind words.
There’s a distinction with these endings I find to be absolutely perfect and telling 1983: symbolizes a victory for the rebellion and a private celebration amongst themselves and the people they fought with to take down the Death Star which will eventually lead to the rest of the galaxy in due time but as of now it’s a perfect party for the rebels and Ewoks. Post RotS: The whole galaxy was there to witness the destruction and fall of the empire as they all celebrate in their own way plus the rebellion as it signals the conclusion where a man who wanted to bring balance to the force finally did so through his family and his son’s own friends wanting to the right thing saving the galaxy and restoring peace for all who longed for it.
Although i was very young at the time, i AM old enough to have watched the original Star Wars when it was first released and have watched all the others since. I'm not sure which version I prefer I think i like the original version better but i do like that Anikin's soul was redeemed and we got to see HIM
I just like the 2011 one better. Within a few seconds, Hayden made sure we felt the love Anakin had for the children he never come to know as a father. It's beautiful and heartbreaking at the same time.
I cannot get past all the quick cuts in the 2011 version when leia and Han reunite with Luke and everyone is hugging each other. They keep cutting over to c3po and r2, nothing is allowed a moment to build the emotions and resonate with the characters feelings between one another; it feels like a choppy compilation. No shot lasts more than a few seconds. It completely ruins the pacing up to that point. I’m not all the old version is better in every way, but all the editing they did right there in the new one feels so bizarre.
I grew up on the special editions, so those will always be nostalgic to me. I do like how they don’t cut away in the original, but the music is so much better to me in the remastered
SE is a bit different as Sebastian Shaw is in the final scene and Ian McDiarmid isn't retconned into Ep. V like he was in 2004, but other than that they are pretty much the same. Theatrical and '97 versions deserve Blurays IMO.
@@drlca6601Absolutely agree! I was lucky enough to get the box set with the original theatrical versions on DVD but I would love to have the Special Editions also as I only have them on VHS. So much better than when they went back and started changing bits unnecessarily.
Oh wow, I saw the OT movies for the first when I was eleven back in 2011. It's been a long time since the last time I watched thesd but just seeing this scene right now made me so emotional.
2011 was the perfect ending to the empire, Deathstar 2 gone, Palpatine and Vader gone, whole galaxy celebrating and then they just ruined it by bringing back the empire in the form of the First Order w/ another Death Star . Why couldn't they just have a new threat?
HFYYN like I said, First Order is basically the Empire (stormtroopers, starkiller base etc.) not necessarily what I would consider a new threat. We've seen it all before.
The OT was never about wizards, laser swords, spaceships, robots or democracy. Star Wars was about Han, Luke and Leia. That’s it. That’s why it worked and that why we (Gen X) loved it. The original ending of Return of the Jedi drives that point home perfectly. It was a little story about those characters and their journey, not some huge, Dune-esque saga of politics and faith. But George just had to pry that complete and satisfying story back open to “expand” it so that he could continue to squeeze it dry. And once the carcass became empty, he sold its remains to a mouse that continues to perform God-knows-what selfish evils upon its legacy. Long live The Trilogy.
This ending makes me hate 7 and 8. In 6, Anakin coming backing to the light, the Fall of the empire, RETURE OF THE JEDI!! Just to find out were back were we started😧
@@dramos8847 In the next Star Wars movie the Emperor isn't dead, Anakin's role to balance the Force basically didn't happen. Palpatine still lived and Anakin's sacrifice was all in vain...

The 2011 version showing prequel locations like Naboo and Coruscant really ties up both trilogies as a whole. Thank you George Lucas for creating such an amazing story.
When the actors hug on the set you can feel that it's more than just acting. You feel the legitimate love and friendship the actors share for each other.
Harrison Ford hated his role he was probably glad it was over lol
2011 version seems to be the favorite. It ties everything from episodes 1 through 6 nicely and serves as a poignant reminder that we never needed an episode 7. This is the Star Wars I want to remember, not what it has become.
True canonical ending?
Mandalorian is pretty good.

The 2011 felt some much more right and heart felt
The Conquistador I agree
The Conquistador true
Except for Hayden
The only thing that didn’t make sense was the planets celebrating. The Death Star was gone, but the Empire was still large and had a tight grip on the galaxy. Still was more heart felt and felt like a celebration moment, in which they won, and felt right
The Conquistador I guess because anikan force ghost in that looks the same as him in the other films

1983: symbolizes a victory for the rebellion and a private celebration amongst themselves and the people they fought with to take down the Death Star which will eventually lead to the rest of the galaxy in due time but as of now it’s a perfect party for the rebels and Ewoks.

2011 was the perfect ending to the empire, Deathstar 2 gone, Palpatine and Vader gone, whole galaxy celebrating and then they just ruined it by bringing back the empire in the form of the First Order w/ another Death Star . Why couldn't they just have a new threat?
The First Order is the new threat.
HFYYN like I said, First Order is basically the Empire (stormtroopers, starkiller base etc.) not necessarily what I would consider a new threat. We've seen it all before.

I love how the jedi Temple looks unchanged and how they brought light to the temple. Putting Return, in Return of the Jedi.
3:53 "F" for that stormtrooper lol
