Hollywood legend John Williams has just added to an already incredibly long list of achievements by making his conducting debut with the Wiener Philharmoniker to perform iconic themes from “Jurassic Park”, “Star Wars” and “Harry Potter”, among other cinematic landmarks. The concert held at Vienna’s Musikverein in January 2020 - which was also the first performance Williams had ever conducted in continental Europe - is available now. Also available in Dolby Atmos®.

I’m very fortunate that my parents always forced my brother and I as kids to go see John Williams when he would perform annually with the Los Angeles Phil Harmonic at the Hollywood Bowl. Looking back those concerts with my family will be some of the fondest memories I have had with my family. I know at some point he will have to stop composing and when that happens it will be a real loss. An absolute genius and arguably the most amazing composer of our lifetime.

In 1993 I was 7 years old. On my birthay my parents took me to the cinema for "Jurassic Park". For me as a boy it was something amazing! Incredible! Now I'm 37... and I still love "Jurassic Park", especially for this beautiful, lovely melody. ❤

Yeah, me too! I was 6 years old when i first watched it and it became my favourite! Now I'm 36 and whenever I hear the main theme, it takes me back to 1993!
My little daughter was reading me a book about dinasaurs so I told her, "wait, what if I put some nice music", obviously this epic theme was my selection. Then her eyes started sparkling and said: " its perfect !!!!" Thanks John, for your amazing creations !

John Williams themes are fantastic, but playing them is not really an achievement for this kind of musician.

Just look at the violinist near the beginning of the Star Wars main theme. In fact, in an interview John Williams said the orchestra enthusiastically requested he add the Imperial March to the concert

At the end of this magnificent piece, notice his eyes as he guides his musicians and signals "the end" when he "flutters" his baton over his left shoulder. What a wonderful piece and you can just read his face when his musicians played every note of this masterpiece - just the way he envisioned it. Thanks you, Maestro. 💥

@@pho3nix- they're not bored at all. That's just the "etiquette" in Austria for classical concerts. You respect the musicians' work through behaving yourself and not distracting them by moving along with the music or making noises. The applause at the end is for showing your excitement!
I'm getting emotional by just looking at John himself conducting. He's almost 90 years old and hasn't lost his spark. He's still enjoying what he does, he still smiles at the orchestra and still has passion for these moments! It's wonderful to witness.

I saw some of Jon Williams' music performed live recently. If you get chills just listening to this, watching live is sureal. You feel like a T Rex could burst in at any moment. I couldn't keep a smile off my face and practically started tearing up. This theme was my childhood and is one of my favorites of his.

Imagine being the French horn player at the beginning. Literally the most important intro lines to any soundtrack, all for you to play, by yourself, in front of the master composer who wrote it, all while he’s not even conducting you, just vibing to his own notes. I don’t think I could take that kind of pressure.

That lone French horn opening gives me goosebumps every time, it plays on its own and then everything else gradually and gently comes into play!
Dear fellow friend of John Williams' music,
this is an understandable mistake but he is not, in fact, a French horn player. He plays the Vienna horn, which is the horn of choice in the Vienna opera, the Vienna symphony, and the Vienna philharmonic. Unlike the French horn, the Vienna horn is not a double F/B type of horn. It is a single horn purely in F. The Vienna horn can be easily recognized by the extra double loop right after its mouthpiece.

That's because it is a Lydian mode that he incorporates in that opening brass hit. And Lydian modes can give you that heavenly kind of a feeling. You can read about it.

I screamed when this part came up, and suddenly I was 10 years old playing with my dinosaur collection.
This is absolutely his best piece. Such a powerful theme - instead of going for scary monster movie he went for the majesty and nailed it completely.
It just hit me that of all his major blockbuster themes, this is closest to being a hymn in a church.
Oh yeah was it supposed to be creature slasher like Jaws or something? Because Jurassic Park became waaaaay more than that. Instead of sending the message that dinosaurs are scary monsters, it feels like they are something beyond us that we must respect. Instead of some cheap Friday scare flick it became a masterpiece of a message from the past

These soundtracks are apart of my childhood and have stayed in my head since I was a kid and will stay forever. It will be a sad day when this man passes. Every amusement park you go to, every movie theater, every pop culture reference has his music tied to it. This man has built Hollywood and not enough people have realized it. He will go down as one of the most talented and beloved composers of all time in the likes of Mozart, Beethoven, Bach, and Debussy. God bless John Williams.

Sadly, most of the comments here don't recognize how insanely good the vienna philharmonic orchestra is. This level of perfection in nuance and timing can't be found anywhere else in the world.

One day I will go. I don’t care what they play. Austrian Philharmonic is a bucket list item just waiting to be checked off.
I think long time fans of BPO, NYPO, CSO, LSO and other major orchestras will have major problem with your statement. I was fortunate enough to sit in Symphony Center listening to Mr. John Williams conducting CSO playing his own music in April 2019. So while I appreciate this VPO performance, I won't say this can't be found anywhere else on earth.
you have 5-6 other big orchestra's with the same quality. Like the Royal Opera London, London Symphony Orchestra,
Berliner Philharmoniker, Bayerisches Staatsorchester, etc. It depends on your personal taste, the head conductor and the management of this houses. Together the hire the musicians for the orchestra.
It like a football team, you need a good coach, manager and players then you can play at the highest level like 4-5 other teams.
I bet to differ. See "The President's Own" Band conducted by Mr. Williams on "March of 1941". Impeccable timing and unison. (This version is my favorite of Jurassic Park, however.

Not sure if many of you caught this... but The deepest sign of respect from JW was given to the horn player in the beginning... a simple shutting of the eyes because that note was SO beautiful at :16 seconds... the horn player took just enough off of it to play it perfectly... THATS JW showing his deepest respect, bravo to that horn player.
Well i don’t know, to me the tune is slighty off and therefor Williams was shutting his eyes, either by embarrassment or disappointment.

He still is my number one favorite concert experience. He was touring when Harry Potter first came out and he did several pieces from the film along with Star Wars, Jurassic Park, ET, Indiana Jones and Superman.

Goddammit! I was 13 when my parents and I watched the first Jurassic Park movie. The first sighting of the Bracchiosaurus herd and then the T-Rex and the Velociraptors… just DAMN!
The best part of this video is seeing each of the instruments as they are playing. As a result, you can actually HEAR each and every one of them. It adds a whole new dimension to this wonderful score.

I was 9 that time
I was just 4 and was not able to appreciate John Williams back then but now I've seen the movie like 20 times or more, it wouldn't be great without John Williams. This concert brought me to tears
Even though I didn't get to watch Jurassic Park in the cinemas, I still get to watch it on TV as a kid

On the other hand, the so-called French horn was developed in Germany. There is a "French" horn that uses piston valves that was the favored instrument of Denis Brain until he moved to a single, B-flat, German made horn toward the end of his life.
It's wonderful (and about f--king time) that the classical "elite" have finally accepted John Williams as one of their own. The cultural impact of his music over the course of 50+ years cannot be called into question. John Williams was my "gateway drug" into classical music, and I shall be grateful to this amazing man until my dying day.
Sort of. Listen to what Williams composes for himself outside of the soundtrack business. It's much more in line with the classical elite but is very personal for him. Probably wouldn't be enjoyable outside of the 20th century classical crowd either. I'm a huge fan of his orchestral soundtracks but not the actual "classical" stuff.

In all its simplistic, this piece truly is a masterpiece amongst many others that he has composed. I cannot imagine my childhood without the music of this man. The music of John Williams has been my gateway into the world of classical music of the great composers. He carries the spirit of these great maestros and has inherited their art while recreating it into his own unique visionary style. I have no doubt in my mind that as long as man continues to walk the Earth, John Williams will leave an unshakeable and monumental legacy that pervades all human generations while inspiring countless others. What a gift it is to be born into this world and be able to hear the heartwarming and extremely powerful music of this great man! I am truly grateful.

If only I could see and listen to this in person. I come back to all these magical pieces every now and then and every time a wave of nostalgia hits. John Williams created masterpieces that will go down in history. His songs are just so iconic and they instantly transport you into the movies. I’m definitely getting my kids in the future to watch the movies and listen to his songs.

This man is a legendary badass. I actually got to see him conducting all his movie compositions at a concert at the Hollywood Bowl in Southern California. I cant even tell you how amazing it was. The seats werent great, but just the memories of being there and witnessing it, it was truly brilliant. This man is a musical genius, WAY ahead of his time.

I swear, I can be 90 years old on my deathbed and when I hear 0:47 I will INSTANTLY feel 9 years old again and being at the theater watching this for the first time. Anyone around my age that got to experience that knows what im talking about. You had never seen anything like this movie. The fact that the Special FX hold up nearly 30 years later is a testament to Spielberg and his magic. Even with those, this movie wouldn't be what it is without John Williams writing the most perfect soundtrack for it. Everything about this is amazing. Thank you for allowing me to listen and watch this for free at any time....
