The original upload has even over one billion views! They aren't a one hit wonder at all! They have great other stuff like Hunting high and low, The sun always shines on TV, Manhattan Skyline, The living daylights, Stay on these roads, Foot of the mountain, Velvet and Lifelines. Saw them live twice. Morten Harket can hit the high notes live. He even hosted the Eurovision Song Contest in 1996...
Yeah this was so far ahead of its time in 1984. I saw it on heavy rotation on MTV and this is early years in music videos... the time between 1982 and about.... 1989 were so fun because they put a lot of time and energy into this new format and the videos, a lot of them, were mini stories. I loved this time in life.
I was in my 20's when this came out in 84-85. The was especially amazing back then with vertually no computers to speak of in that time. It speaks to how well this was made to still be able to wow people today.
You can NEVER hear this song too much, and the video makes it so much better, plus i think we all fell in love with the lead singer after watching this💗💗😎😎
This album was DIVINE!!!! Everything that was awesome about 80’s. There’s an acoustic version of this they recorded recently that proves they’ve still got it!!!
This video is one of the best videos EVER!!! And the song is TIMELESS!!! A real masterpiece!!! And A-ha have a lot of excellent songs, you got to react to "The sun always shines on tv", "I've been loosing you", "Cry wolf", "Traing on thought", "Manhattan skyline"... And today they are still great...
I could e wrong, but they either won a Grammy for this video for video production or an MTV Award. Apparently the story, he is a racer, see her through the graphic novel, falls in lover with her, pulls here in. The guys are the other racers and they are mad at him for winning and attaching him. He breaks out of the comic in the end and unite with her. Awesome graphics and I loved this when I was in high school. Was there and saw it on MTV when it first aired.
The two men that were chasing the lead singer and the girl were from the race in the beginning. You didn't notice the waitress crumpling the comic book. That's when the storyline was crossed over because the comic book was crumpled and their worlds collided. This song and music video was released in late 85.
A-ha! LOVE IT! You did it again. You picked one of my absolute favourites. And, of course, being a native Norwegian, what can I say? A-ha ... they made history. You can't imagine how big they were back in 1985, how big they still are, how big they will always be, in Norway. They put Norway on the music map. And they continued releasing albums up until 2009. Some other really good songs by them: "The Weight of the Wind", "I've Been Losing You", The Sun Always Shines on TV", "Hunting High and Low" ...
This video is actually from 1985, and has reached over 1bn views on TH-cam. They released a different version of the song with a low budget video in late 1984, but it wasn't a hit. I saw them live last year and Morten Harket can still hit the high notes. You also need to check out a song from 2000 called Summer Moved On if you want to hear what his voice is capable of.doing.
5.2 million views cannot be accurate....this video is LEGENF**KINGDARY!!! and its beloved all over the world. the amount of plays and rotation on MTV & VH1 over the years ..the viewership has to be tens of millions and you certainly don't see this creativity in today's videos
I was 9 years old when I fell in love with this song and with A-ha. Since that moment their music has been part of my live even now. Greetings from Spain
Yes this one was smash hit in the 80's, everybody loved it and it was very innovative at the time. A-Ha got very famous after this and has so many hits. I love this band, very talented and good looking. Thanks for the reaction.
You should also check out the youtube documentary on this song on a-ha's official youtube channel, there is a lot of interesting facts about how this song (and the group) came about!
You shouldn't be surprised that the video and music were so good. 80's is the peak of music and music videos... when MTV actually plays... music videos.... there were so many innovative music videos and concepts that goes along with the great music. You don't see that very much anymore, except for artists who are trying to recapture the same thing, like say, the Weekend....
I love watching these reactions and I'm always tickled when the younger viewers note that "this is amazing for a video made in the 1980's." Well, to be fair, this kind of mix of animation and "real life" photography was old even then. Ever see Disney's "Mary Poppins"? THAT film was made in 1964 and the artists at Disney presented Dick Van Dyke and Julie Andrews dancing and interacting with animated characters in several scenes. Now I admit Take on Me employed the most up to date computer technology to mix the rotoscoped sketch animation with the live actors when it was made but it was an accomplished concept LONG before Take on Me was released as a video. But....it was also VERY skillfully crafted, the sketches lend a sense of motion and suspense that is tangible and it works so well with the story being told! I'm really glad you liked it. The 80's was a very special time for music and those of us who lived through it are happy to see a younger generation discovering and enjoying the same things we did way...WAY back "in the day." Cheers!
"Touchy!" Is also another good and fun song with great vocals from Morten Harcket. "Manhattan Skyline" is also such a great video with interesting and surprising music
The guys with wrenches that attacked them ... you have to go back to the beginning of the video he's in a race with these guys and he beats them and they get really mad about it
We see the end of their story in the beginning on the clip "The Sun Always Shines On Tv". I also loves the clip "Hunting Highd And Low" of a-ha, so beautiful
Great reaction to a great song. They are not one-hit wonders and had a string of really successful singles (at least here in the UK). Loads of synth heavy tracks that you'll love I think (particularly around the same period as this). Next one of theirs you should listen to is 'The Sun Always Shines on TV' as the video leads directly on from this one.

@@SpaceCattttt Well chart-wise, 'The Sun Always Shines..' did better than this one in the UK and got to No.1 (this only managed to get to No.2) but I would totally agree that Take On Me is probably the better song and is more well known. Loved a bit of 'Touchy' too!
Like their living daylights track from the JB movie, Manhattan skyline, Hunting High and Low, Scoundrel days, The Swing of things, I've been losing you...
Thanks for reacting... as a young girl I dreamed of being drawn into the comic book. The guys who are following lost the race at the beginning of the video. The follow up is The sun always shines on tv. Cheers Suzette 🤘 💟 🇳🇱
Going through your reaction videos and I appreciate your sending time on music of my generation. I had to say, that when you mention that this video got 5.4 million views, remember that this number is just a small fraction of the true number of views that MTV gave to all of the videos of the 80's and 90's.
Love this reaction! It actually has just past 1 billion views on the official video! Which is amazing but really deserved. When i was a teenager we looked at magazines like "jackie" and they were cartoon love stories so this is where the inspiration came from. Morten Harket also holds the world record for the longest note in " Summer moved on" i have seen them live many times and he always hits the notes and keeps the note so long any other human woukd have past out! Big fan love it!
Morten Harket has one of the best singing voices. Morten has an exceptional voice with quite an impressive range, a very expressive way of singing and can use his voice in many different ways. His voice reaches 5 octaves.
Just one of my fave bands ever. They are still going strong, live they are impeccable, Morten can still get those high notes. Check out the MTV unplugged session they did a few years back just to see the sheer talent of him, Pål and Mags. So many great songs, check out “Stay on these roads” , “The Swing of things” “Train of thought”, “The sun always shines on TV”.......jeez there’s just too many, fantastic band
Great reaction my man. Yes, the video was groundbreaking at the time. I remember it was actually shown in the news at telly in Denmark. 'The sun always shines on tv' would be a good follow up to this, one of my 80ties faves. And by the way, the guys with the wrenches were in the race at the beginning of the video. They lost to Morten and felt vindictive.
We were all in love with Morten at our girl's school. Just beautiful vocally musically & visually. More A- Ha definitely available. Xx Sj from the UK. 💕
Great video clip! I always loved it. Very creative, fun, great music. It's a little story in 4 minutes. It grabs you like the character does with her hand and pulls you in. Completely brilliant. I have yet to see a video that clever. Groundbreaking effects too. Love it! Glad that you love it too!
After watching 3 other reaction videos, I like yours best because you talk more about the comic book / sketch / live action aspect of the video, while the others do comment on the incredible music and range but don't seem to be watching the wink and the hand luring her in. And, it's still not obvious if she ever paid, even when she arrived back in the diner where the book was last left, in the trash can. He has other songs, but this is THE AHA song. It was my favorite song of 1985 and the 1980's
This video was so innovative when it came out in Fall of 85. Besides that amazing vocal in the chorus, notice what the bass drum is doing. It does 8 bars of driving 4/4 kicks as the voice is climbing, then drops out to a sort of "heartbeat" for 4 bars (at "I'll be gone..."). It creates a sort of floaty feeling, then comes back with the 4 to floor for the last phrase as the voice rises to the high note.
Morten spotted the word aha in one of Påls notebooks, he had planned to use it as a title for a song. The idiom "aha" was common in many languages, and they wanted a band name that was a common word in Norwegian, but also in other languages. As mentioned in another comment, they added the dash after another band with the name Aha! challenged their use of aha as band name. Fun part - the other band changed their name after a concert in Stockholm, where a whole lot of screaming young girls were waiting in front of the concert hall when they arrived. Those girls were probably disappointed when an adult, Norwegian blues band appeared instead of their beloved idols.

Great video to react to! I still love this video after all these years...how they go back and forth between reality and the cartoon world. Still very cool...💜
STUNNING TRQCK !! This is the 3rd version that was released and the one that took the band to the top ! ! They have had many many hits since then both solo and as a-Ha. This was a game changer the fist time I heard this track it just had my jaw drop !! Still has me all pumped up all these 36 years later !!! Awesome !!! For your inner musician the note Morten hits at the top of the chorus is the top C for a tenor, the highest note on the main voice although Morten transfers from main voice to Head voice for it. Wise decision for performance live purposes too ….. it was a revolutionary video for the time too. Met the band many times over the years and they are always so nice and friendly too ….love Love love !!!!
Rotoscoping was cutting edge back then. This was the technique used to rotate around the frame to move the characters from pencil drawings to live colour imaging. When this video was made it was the most expensive pop video made up to that point in time. If you want amazing falsetto, check out Barry Gibb of the Bee Gees
5 million views? has well over a billion. these were world famous for years. they did this song unplugged a while ago, slower, but still has an amazing voice.
I was absolutely obsessed with Aha at this time for several years. Their first two albums are great, Morten was my first celeb crush! 😂 This was a ground breaking video at the time and I think it still holds up pretty well today. The Sun Always Shines on TV was also a massive hit. They also did the theme song for the Bond movie The Living Daylights. They’ve had a few spells of hiatus but are still making music. Thanks for the reaction!

Has all the optimism and energy of the 80s... along with other Swedish songs such as " all that she wants is another baby" etc
Totally love the video!!!!! I watch every reaction to this song. When the reactor closes their eyes because the music is enthralling and they don't watch the video...we are all screaming at them to watch this amazing video.
I love how the drum beat changes!!!
Hope you have done some Angelina Jordan!!!

Great video to react to! I still love this video after all these years...how they go back and forth between reality and the cartoon world. Still very cool...💜
80’s in all It’s style! A-ha and Duran Duran were my favorites. 💫
Met the band many times over the years and they are always so nice and friendly too ….love
Love love !!!!
I'm 40 years old and this is the best song that I like from the 80s
I was almost a teenager at this period and I remember the singer was in my dreams. He was so handsome. It was like in this video. Like a fantasme. ;)
This was ahead of its time when it came out. Everyone knew this song and video.
