When Anthony Crawford picked this one, I took notice. For those who think this is too much, I bought a brand new Honda Accord Euro in 2004 for 34k! It now has 250,000k's and its still tight.
And here we are 20 years later and this car is bigger, faster, uses less fuel, more equipped and priced from only 40k. Meanwhile my house has gone up 500% since 2004.
This looks a good bit of kit.

Using the RBA inflation calculator, $34k in 2004 is equal to about $54k today. $40k for this is the first time Honda’s priced a new product well in the past few years. They should’ve offered more affordable variants of the Civic as well.

I bought one of these and am really happy with its performance so far. Not sure about the lane assist but all of the other features work fantastic. I am averaging the 5 l per 100 km plate as stated by Honda. I have sat in all other SUV's before buying and this is clearly the most comfortable and I am a fairly large guy. Everything is within reach and the drive is really smooth. The pickup is extraordinary, I have been driving an Audi A4 over the past 15 years and thought this in normal mode was a great alternative. I haven't used sports mode yet as I am so impressed with Normal Mode pick up. The leather interior and the bold exterior are really stylish. Honda has finally made a mends for the cheaper cars and specs they have been plying in Australia. Well done Honda. Please note I am driving the Hybrid version.

Just bought one - ZRV, petrol base 1.5L turbo, its a superb machine, made in Japan! Re-living the dream, steering and braking is phenomenal, interior is reminiscent of Honda's retro days, sitting in Osaka's sake bars - enjoying icy cold udon noodles! It's not going to be fitting for everyone, but let's just say you missed the boat. This car - ZRV is unreal, Type R Civic is on the way (wife is most upset), sold my beloved Integra type R a few years back, saddest day of my life If you're not in love with the ZRV after your first drive, well IMO you're living the matrix life.......

Great job Paul, you really did great here. The inclusion of the lane departure warning, lane tracing, prevention and integrated cruise control/assist made this video a perfect one. Buyers can actually see how it works before buying because some manufacturers don’t do this well at all.

    Test drove one today.
The bad: The seats don't have lumbar support which was quite disapointing. The centre console is wide and bulgy which intrudes on your leg space. No heads up display. The luggage area is much smaller than the competition.
The good: Costs much less than a Rav4 or Xtrail, quieter than the Rav4, not much wind noise. The infotainment system isn't obnoxious.
The Rav4 Limited is roomier on the inside, uses less fuel, is probably more reliable and is AWD. The Xtrail is more luxurious on the inside and has more room and features.
    Worth considering for the price.

We've ordered one and should be collecting it next month. Just an intriguing car. But I wish they'd offer a better choice of colours in the UK. That burgundy red thing you were driving looks nicer than the bright red we've ordered. I think the problem with the lane keeping here is the camber in the road causing the car to drift left. Lane keep assist will only make small adjustments and it looks like the camber is causing it to have to make more of an adjustment than it's been programmed to do.

The lane keep assist does work well on the highway however you must keep both hands on the steering wheel at all times or the orange warning flash does come on repeatedly. Here in the Middle East Dubai to be precise.I was in the market to buy a car with a budget of 25-28k USD
Initially decided to go with kia k5 but then the base model is without any features.
Recently went to Honda after a long time tried the ZRV ex which is a good car but still was not impressed with styling of the car from the back. Looked like a 90s car so went and I feel it’s 1000 bucks more then it’s price should be. HRV is better looking then but underpowered with 1.5 engine.
So paying a little more but going with the Mitsubishi outlander.
    I am getting a 2.5 engine with 4x4 support.

  • @aaaaplay

I drove one about two months ago. I needed up buying a Skoda Octavia for the space. However, I was impressed with the ZR-V. Despite its external size I felt the interior was more comparable to a Golf or Civic. It also has the stance of a wagon more so than an SUV, it's oddly packaged.
Where it could be better in my opinion, is the cargo capacity and infotainment. Considering its size I would be expecting 400-450L rather than the 380L approx. it has.
The infotainment is quick, responsive, and high res. But the screen is pretty small by today's standards. Interestingly, it's android based but not android automotive. I'd love to see Honda roll out the Android Automotive infotainment system with the larger screen and instrument cluster maps from the US Honda Accord. I think that would really bring it into line with its European competitors and rise above the Japanese competition.
Other nitpicks would include, no glovebox light and no easy release for the rear seats. Ambient lighting is also a very expensive optional accessory?
I would have like to Honda offer the panoramic roof and HUD option in Australia as they do in Europe.
The cabin quality was outstanding - everything I touched felt nice.

Appealing to very two different types of buyer. The BYD buyer would be looking for an EV, happy to try a newcomer or something more experimental. The Honda buyer would be looking for a traditional petrol/hybrid car that drives well, from a trusted brand, still an all-new modern car but less experimental and more like the car they already have.

Paul did a competent job on the car except for one significant detail. In the Hybrid version of the car there is no spare tyre! So if you get a ‘flat’ then you can either pump the tyre full of a white foam product and run on a ‘remedied’ flat or call Roadside Assistance. Is this an acceptable solution? Given that you are expected to pay $54K for the hybrid version within Australia, I contend that this is UNACCEPTABLE. The space normally occupied by the spare tyre or space saver tyre is occupied by batteries.

    • @CarExpertAus
