I just had my 84 Celica stolen three days ago. They found the vehicle and she's back home now, so I am going to be installing a switch like you just demonstrated. Thank you for this super clear tutorial!
One tip if you do this: Some time in the future if your vehicle doesn't start, check this circuit. Even though I used a HD quality switch, the switch broke internally and would only fail occasionally, took me a long time to track it down. It's good to have one still.
Been debating on doing it this way on a couple of my cars. Thanks for clarifying 🤙 The switch not get hot without a relay? Had 12v electric fans wired straight to a switch in my g body and it got super hot until i put in a relay..
That's a good idea but I have another idea you can add to that consider having to kill switch inside the glove box won't you put it on a remote key fob that way you control the on and off when you leave your car and there's no kill switch to find😅😂
The other reason for doing this is to allow electrical work to be done with the key engaged and if you forget, since you were working on the car not driving it, and walk away the coil doesn't get so hot it burns down your house.
Dude I like it. I bought this thing that mounts under the hood. It disrupts the flow to the battery. It's big and bulky but it has a remote control on it. So it's cool is, I can use the key fob and shut it off when I go somewhere and then there won't be any power. I haven't installed it yet. It was 35 bucks back in the day. It's probably 50 nowadays with this stupid economy. Would you recommend that thing or your kill switch? Just wondering. Awesome video again brother. Thank you
Yeah, sound better then a toggle switch haha! If you have some sort of Bluetooth link thing go for it. On this video I am just going for an economically friendly extra step in not getting your car stollen
@@ChrisNCars yes indeed. I'm going to install it next weekend and I'll let you know. It's from eBay so it's probably not the best but who knows... Thanks again for the quick response brother!

It sounds like a cool concept, but I would always recommend a mechanical switch over a remote. As a guy who has installed A LOT of Bluetooth underglows, those remotes are often finicky, and the batteries tend to die all the time. Annoying when you’re trying to show of your lights on Main Street, REALLY annoying when your car won’t start. 😅
hi I want to smog my car, that's all i need to legally drive it, although i had to disconnect negative battery and reconnect it, when ready to go..but now my guy tried installing a kill switch with wire from an auto parts store, so i guess he accidentally did it backwards and burnt the wire I smelled it a little.. I just want to go back to how I could disconnect negative battery terminal and reconnect it when i'm ready to go... how bad is the fact we burnt that wire, he told me don't drive it the next day, I can't get ahold of my buddy... pls help i want to smog it i'm just scared to drive it since he said just don't drive it the next day by the way the car runs very good, it'll pass smog, but yea this was 3 days ago can you help? if he didnt say don't drive it the next day I would take it to go smog. I only have until 6-6-23 to complete smog pls help
my 77 c10 key is stuck forward in the auxiliary position, allowing me to start the truck but not turn it back far enough to turn it off. i have changed the ignition cylinder and have the same issue. would this be a good temporary fix to shut the truck off until i can track down the issue? thank you. Also i am assuming since i cannot turn the igniton on/off i wont be able to use a test light on the wire to test it. any advice? thank you
@@eric-mq5dq if you can get the cylinder out I would just replace the entire assembly. This would work to allow your car to turn on and off but you will probably blow a fuse or your coil out.

So something in my steering column is broke on my 77 c10. Won’t allow the key to turn backwards it’s stuck in auxiliary. Can turn forwards to start but can’t kill the truck. Could this be a temporary fix for my situation?
Yes. The same thing happened to one of my 78 Regals. It gave me signs that the switch was bad before it did what yours is doing. Got to work and couldn't kill it. Mine would stay forward on startup and I would have to manually click the switch back one notch or the starter would stay engaged 😬 I replaced the ignition switch and had no more troubles.
hey @ChrisNCars I have a question, Its stumped me for months at 0:58 there's that real flat wire bolted to the cab, do you know what that's meant to do because I have one on both sides and neither of them are hooked up
@@autorocket2411 yeah the negative part of battery is grounded and all the electrical components have a ground. So they all use they frame, body, engine, etc to function.
Yes, I think the starter would be a better solution because the thief won't be trying to start car more than once or twice and drain the battery. Do you have a wiring diagram to do this?
lol no, if i were trying to steal your car and it didnt crank, im immediately going to look for a switch and i can because the car didnt make any noise to blow my cover. kill the ignition. it makes a hell of a racket trying to start and i would bail.
finally, a video that's simple and quick . most videos go on and on and by the end, it cost $200 . thanks

I'm here too for my 89 Celica
Put an AirTag inside the car but like hide inside the back seat
I think I will put 10 of those switches on the dash and have a sequence of up and down like a helicopter or airplane.
Lol! Smart
me too 😂😂... In fact im usingo in my car in diferent hidden locations, but I feel like I need more.
😂
Imagine If you forget the sequence 😂
If you do this, make a video with a random sequence other than the one you actually use. I'm interested to see how this would be wired up.
A clean install and you were careful. I saw one guy who didn't even bother to insulate his solder joints, unlike you who used shrink tubing. Good job!

Thanks for the video. I have an old truck, and the other videos were all showing the fuel pump solution.
Out all the videos this is the best I'm so using this method rn
Cables! I'm going to do the same but using the ignition wire for the key so it won't turn over!
If you're saavy you can wire it through multiple switches so it has to have the appropriate combination to work correctly.
And you’d feel like a jet pilot lol!
Very good technique for personal safety.

Great video. When you are inside the truck you only cut 1 wire and connect each end. Is that correct?
That's correct, "batt" power cable or cable that powers on with key and goes to distributor.

Great video! Question, roughly what gauge of wire did you use? At least for your application?
10-12 gauge. Good luck!
Why don't you use no start on the automatic transmission selector lever inhibitor won't start6 in drive or reverse
I used the speaker wire and I checked the fuse that put on the wire. It seems okay and I checked the switch. It seems okay so what could be wrong?

Does this apply to 90's model Semi Trucks also?
Probably, just need to find ignition power.
I used to switch 250 V and 25 A. It worked at first then the car turned off so what could cause this and I put a fuse in one of the wires
Probably a fuse somewhere down the line. Get a volt meter and check you are getting proper current before and after switch
