- The E36 M3 was the M division's second attempt at motorsports inspired 3 series. And while the E30 M3 that came before it was quite literally a racecar for the road, the E36 was quite a bit different. It was softer, more grown up - it had better road manners and a silky smooth engine.
This is the BMW We LOVE To HATE... It's the E36 M3.
Don't think though, that it was any less an M car. It may not have had completely bespoke bodywork, or a crazy dog-leg gearbox, but the brakes, suspension, steering, and most importantly the attitude were 100% BMW M.
It was THE car that showed the world you didn't HAVE TO compromise when it comes to a sports car. On one hand a well made, smooth riding sedan that was perfectly happy taking the kids to school and sitting in traffic on your way to work, and on the other - an absolute track weapon, beating out cars like the NSX, the Viper, the 911, And the Ferrari 348 in handling comparisons.
It won world car of the year more than once, and today is celebrated as a pivotal point in BMW's history.
Because even though the US spec cars didn't get the full fat race spec engine, it did get a re-worked version of the now legendary M50/M52 (S50/S52) that not only made the same torque as the Euro cars, but was actually a bit less temperamental - and in the real world, mere tenths of a second slower to 60.
This is the story of the E36 BMW M3 - and how BMW saved the M brand (in the US anyway) in the most backward, questionable way possible. By taking a little of the 'Motorsport' out of it.

I think saying the e36 m3 is an “underated” car is quite an understatement. E36s have made a name for themselves for years and are super popular among enthusiasts
I actually like the E36 M3. That smooth straight-six sound is unbeatable.
It usually understeer and lacks power, for me, it’s a trauma
The US spec E36 M3 can be made nearly as if not even more powerful as the Euro spec E36 M3 with no more than $3k worth of boltons and a pro tune (included in that $3k). It will also still manage to be more reliable and cheaper than the euro spec. Anyone who hates on the USA E36 M3 is forgetting it was designed for a market that is known to customize their vehicles once the warranty expires.
These m3 are selling for 15-30k now on the market so idk about under 10k. I’m on the market everyday and prices is bonkers

You don’t have any business owning an E36 if you can’t afford 15 to 30K purchase price you can’t afford to unleash it’s real potential so check out a Miata or up your income.

Great video. I have an e36 M3 Evo saloon, European spec, and I love it. It really is every car you could ever want. Even after 15 years of ownership, I am still not bored with it, it just does everything the way a car should and, as you say in the video, it makes every journey exciting. It thrills me every time I get in it. The only other car I have driven that can do that in the same way is a Subaru Impreza Turbo.

E36s are the reason imma car guy. Growing up my dad bought a 97 4 door 328i, around 2000 we started modifying it. I remember we had just did the m3 5 speed swap and hks exhaust right before we went to see fast and furious in theaters. Long story short by 07 the car was the first to hit 1000whp and first in the 9s. If it wasn't for that car me and my pops would of never been so close.

BMW actually didn't produce more e30 M3 not because they couldn't keep up with production, but because they were sued for claiming it was a limited edition of 10,000 cars and produced more than they claimed in the USA
The internet made me crazy 8 years ago and I sold my E36 M3 for peanuts. People convinced me the E36 isn’t a real M3. Now the same car sells for €20k more than when I sold it. One of the best cars I ever owned and I still miss it

I like the E36 because it looks nice and it we owned like over 20 of them their really underrated it has everything you want a inline 6 and it comes in a 2 door or 4 door its just like a lexus is300 but that only comes in 4 door

I'm looking at one in a few days its 5 speed manual but not an M but it had M suspension sadly its a 1.9 4 cylinder.
Back in 2005 I almost bought a E 36 M3 1999 blue with the white Vanos interior. The owner talked me out of it because he bought it brand new and I would’ve been the second owner didn’t talk me out of it because he didn’t want to sell it only because I was young and then understand the maintenance. Long story short. I ended up with an I 35 Infiniti. Lol but I love these cars.
I will always love BMW my first car when I'm 18 or 19 it's going to be a BMW 525i e39 or e60 because family friends have BMW cars in my family I'm in the BMW family tree

Irl . Nobody. It was/is well loved
It's all well and good comparing the US spec 3.0 vs the euro spec 3.0
But we also got the 3.2 evo, which is where M division really started upping the ante with NA engines. 200cc saw a 40hp increase. Then the S54 came along and added another 20hp. And then the CSL came along and added another 20hp to that. 3.0 E36 280hp. 3.2 CSL 360hp.
3.0 US spec 240hp
But I get why it exists. And tbh, if it didn't and it didn't sell well, maybe the brakes would have been pulled up at M division rather than letting them go ape shit.

only because the shark was so much of a beast, it was drivers favorite and had nearly the same amount of horses in the racing version
