  • Today see's me out on a walk in the first snow of the year in the Peak District.A 10 mile walk from Cutthroat Bridge heading up Derwent Edge to Back Tor & Lost Lad.The conditions & views high up were not the best & in those conditions with poor visibility it's important to have a route planned & make sure you go well prepared.I hope you liked the two little stories i told regarding the urban legends behind why cutthroat bridge & Lost Lad got their names.

Very atmospheric with the snow Andy. I was up there 2nd Jan with my lad (he wasn't lost LOL) - I even made a video (plug). Just on a there and back up to Back tor Trig. Had some great views due to the low sun angle. It was quite busy on the ridge with it being a bank holiday. Hoping to get back up there soon for a wild camp. ATB

Great walk did it yesterday with the dog, but was a lot warmer in August. Set out at 4 and back at the car by 8:30, just before the light went. Convenient layby that one by cutthroat bridge!

But the snow and mist have their own beauty, I think. I really loved this walk, especially the story of Lost Lad. What I really like about you Andy, is that you're intrepid, but sensible; well-equipped, knowledgeable and don't stake needless risks. I am loving your channel.

Thanks R&D,i was doing a bit of planning for the route & came across the stories & it got me thinking. So after checking the weather for the area & knowing the walk may be short on views with the fog i decided to add them in to the walk to make the vid that bit more interesting.Bit of a sad tale the "Lost Lad" one & being up there in those conditions it's easy to see how people get lost...TFW & the comments guys..ATB Andy.

Hi Andy, Great video and good to see the snowy hills. Watched a few of your videos now and recently subscribed. Walked the Dark Peak hills for nearly 30 years but never knew the stories of the Lost Lad and Cutthroat Bridge, so thanks for the little history lesson. Well done for clearing that sign too, it could just save someone`s life. Dave

Hi Andy. Liked the video thanks.. will sub your channel. That’s a great walk and indeed some fantastic views on a clear day but the snow tops puts a different perspective on the scenery equally as awesome. I’ve not had the fortune yet for my derwent edge walk to land on such a day. As you say need to be prepared for those conditions. First time I met snow being inexperienced had me lost for hours on Bleaklow and was scary indeed. The stories add to the atmosphere and you tell em well. . Didn’t know about the cutthroat bridge - gruesome tales! Take care. Stephen.

Hi Stephen TFW...I had a good days walk that day & the snow does make it more interesting despite the lack of views that day.As you say on days like that with limited views it does give xtra importance on having a route planned & good knowledge of the area or it can get interesting very quickly in those type of conditions. The story's i'd looked into previous & thought it'd add a little more interest to the walk,i especially like the lost lad one & that story only add's to the importance of navigation. Thanks again for watching & atb for the new year..Andy.

look forward to more from you

Cheers Mark...as i was planning my rote i came across the tales & thought i just had to add them into the walk.sad one about "lost lad" but with the conditions as they were that day you can see just how easy it is to get lost up there with minimal visibility...TFW Mark & ATB...Andy.

Hi Chris Thanks for watching mate..Yes it was a cracking walk to do even in those conditions i really enjoyed it despite minimal views. The walk on a clear day has some amazing views to offer,Iv'e been up Derwent Edge to Back Tor a few times now & it's a cracking well recommended walk.I came across the stories whilst planning the walk & just had to add them in knowing i was visiting the locations. The "Lost Lad" tale is quite a sad one & experiencing those type of conditions it's quite easy to see how people can get lost up there...The top is a Berghaus Verdon II Fleece Hoody it's my old faithful that top it's so warm when up in the hills...TFW Chris..ATB Andy.
